CAT CITY (MACSKAFOGÓ), 1986, Hungary, 96 min. Unflappable and unstoppable mouse secret agent Nick Grabovsky (László Sinkó) with his deadpan voice, baggy pants and a big “G” on his shirt, goes up against the criminal cat gang run by the sinister, metal-pawed Mr. Teufel (Miklós Benedek), in Hungarian director Béla Ternovszky’s surreal, animated sci-fi treasure. Set in the year 80 AMM (“After Mickey Mouse”) on Planet X where cats and rats have banded together to eliminate mice, the film features a show-stopping series of musical numbers including a deranged Euro-disco song (“Just purr with me / Touch me with tender paws”) and a bizarre chorus of Mexican vampire bats named Los Vampiros who inhabit an ancient Mayan temple. A cross between 1980s Don Bluth-style animation (THE SECRET OF NIMH) and the British TV series “Danger Mouse” (clearly an inspiration here), CAT CITY has long been a beloved cult favorite in Eastern Europe - recently restored by the National Film Institute in Hungary from the original 35mm camera negative for its first-ever U.S. Blu-ray release by Deaf Crocodile. I also hope we also get the English speaking version because of this restoration. My dad got us this on VHS in the 80s. This film is proof that one could definitely make good animation movies in Eastern Europe. This is as good as what they made in Hollywood and Asia at the time. Many thanks from a Norwegian fan.

@@denifnaf5874 It's central europe by location, but it was in the eastern bloc during the cold war so people will forever call it eastern europe, especially when talking about old media like this movie.

I am a Michigander and this film was never released in the USA. But, I managed to get the original Hungarian copy and LOVE IT!!!

I don't know what it is about Michigan and animation, but I can always trust a Michigander to not only have extensive knowledge of animation, but even have the collection of said animation.

Actually we do get a re-release... of the same dogshit mpeg-2 DVD, riddled with all manner of flaws, including dirty camera lens at one point.

It is! It is a classic and a cult film.
When I was a kid (~6-8years old) there was a year when I watched this gem 5-6 times a week.
Since then I known it all by heart.
We really like this cartoon in Hungary.

This movie was restored by the national film institution of Hungary, they won't restore french and brazilian movies...
Oh god is this legit? Can't wait to get my hands on it and integrate the incredible italian dub this movie recieved at the Giffoni Film Festival in 1986.
I hope the blu-ray will be region code free and the English subtitle will be able to be turned off.

Massive nostalgia, had this on video (VHS) as a kid..this looks so good restored! I'd buy this especially if you got the English dub back.

There was a movie similar to this I saw as a kid on VHS called Mousetropolis
I remember the song "Four Gangsters", some burlesque dancing and a love interest eho looked Japanese.

yes! But the word jokes and the funny one liners from hungarian version did not get translated to english.
