@@StarlasAiko Maybe he knows a little history, and has a vision for himself of achieving greatness. His master did see to it that he was educated to some degree, after all, as the movie indicated. The whole ''Riddle of Steel'' thing is actually a pretty clever philosophical question/ metaphor. In the beginning, Conan's father tells him that steel is the strongest thing. ''You cannot trust either man nor woman nor beast. THIS ( points to the steel blade) is what you can trust." But despite his strong steel blade, he gets killed. He was wrong. Later, Thulsa Doom tells Conan: ''Steel is nothing without the flesh that wields it.'' He also was wrong, because flesh can be killed. In the end, Conan overcame all obstacles & got his revenge mainly because of his unbreakable willpower. ( And some help from Valeria's ghost.) The willpower to use steel & flesh is what makes you strong. That's the answer to the ''Riddle of Steel''.
Not forgetting the lesson of who you can trust, as his gaze shifted from Thulsa Doom to his father's sword, and snapped out of the snake druid's hypnotic gaze. It would have been too much to dub his father's voice, "This you can trust", as it would have insulted the audience's intelligence.
Spot on. That's why the shot of Conan's father's sword being broken during the final battle is so important, and that's the moment when Conan realises the truth. All done without dialogue as well.
The thing most people today don't realize is this is not a mindless action movie. It has a fairly deep story but it also has very little dialogue so you have to pay attention to know what is going on. So a lot of reactors go in thinking it's just an action movie to riff on and then have no idea what is going on because they didn't pay attention.
"For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm." Conan has much deeper philosophy than people realize. I love this quote much more than the one that most people use about enemies. Conan has grown past being the beast of battle he was made to be and he's realized that he'll never know peace like when he was child again.
@@jessecortez9449 that is a good one my favorite line is what Conan is told when he first sees a city. "Behold civilization ancient and wicked". Right there we are told civilization is not actually a good thing
@@ryanjacobson2508 I think I it's less over socialized and more forced socialization. I think an "always online" society has begun to mimic the social effects of overpopulation.
I agree. There is a lot more that deals with the spiritual connection the people had to the land than anything else. It was a spiritual war as much as a physical one.
"I am the well spring, from which you flow. When I am gone, you will have never been." - Thulsa Doom. RIP James Earl Jones, thank you so much for so many great moments I grew up with!
Valeria was a great character. See, the '70s/'80s had strong female characters like Ripley, Sarah Connor and Valeria. The movie spends like half the time building up the backstory, that's why it's kinda slow, but movies now-a-days are all action, all CGI, all in a hurry, but nothing worth watching. At least Conan was building up to the ending.
You can tell she was a professional dancer and gymnast before acting. The way she moves through the orgy scene, as she stealthily creeps over the bannister to set fire to the drapes, she moves like a cat. Totally believeable that she was a thief.
"Conan! What is best in life?" "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!" Great movie...I hope Dawn loves it!😁
I've always preferred "For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm." Everyone uses the one that sounds brutal but this one is much more so because he's moved past being the mindless beast of battle and he's realized a maturity level knowing he'll never know peace like he knew as a child.
Max von Sydow--the king who wants his daughter back--had a varied career throughout its 70-year span, to say the least. He did everything from high art like Bergman's The Seventh Seal to everyman's favorites like Flash Gordon and Strange Brew. He always brought a unique vision to every role he played.
I would like to file criminal charges against JJ Abrams for criminally under using Max von Sydow in Star Wars Ep 7 (the greatest waste of a great cast since Alien : Resurrection).
Crom is the god of willpower and self reliance, so prayer to him for help will usually get you punished by him some way, but because Conan's prayer was merely for his deeds to be noted "that few stood against many" he gained Crom's favour
"Why doesn't your god have a statue?" "Crom needs no form to be a god. It actually makes it easier to pray to him. Your gods require a temple or a statue to pray to each of them with. All one needs to do with Crom, is prop up a rock and start praying to him."
Crom essentially served the surrogate role of father to Conan. Not the type who would be kind and loving but give him the harshest lessons in survival so that Conan could not be mentally or physically broken. Notice that Conan's only true moment of weakness was when Thulsa Doom tried to brainwash him into believing that he was Conan's true spiritual father. Crom's spirit enabled Conan to overcome the illusion. The same general theme happened in the next Conan movie in the hall of mirrors.
She reappears in the spirit in the next movie. Then Sandahl Bergman appears as the villain in RED SONJA, with Arnold essentially playing the same type of character. Weird.
It's weird. Yes. If we could travel back to the very ancient past, the world would seem extremely weird to us; in fact, it would seem practically incomprehensible. That's one of the things I love about this movie. It does an excellent job letting us feel like strangers in a strange land, and the excellent production design creates the look of an ancient culture, borrowing elements from many ancient cultures but copying none completely.
I still play the soundtrack whenever I play League of Legends. Something about going into battle listening to the CONAN OST just makes me fight harder.
I swear to god Ive seen this masterpiece so many times since I was a kid I stil know it word for word and quote it all the time. Amazing soundtrack too. If I ever had an epic walk to do I'd play it on my earbuds and feel like I was Conan walking through the town or village, surrounded by peasants. This role was made for Arnold. Compare him, in this, to Sean Bean as Boromir "the barbarian" in Jacksons Lord Of The Rings. Night and DAY! GROM! And he LIVES IN THE EARTH! And that girl who played Conans mum, who got her head chopped off at the start, she was mesmerizingly gorgeous I always thought. RIP Thusla Doom (1931-2024)
@@wyldhowl2821 I play the soundtrack via youtube in the background whenever I play League Of Legends. I swear, makes every battle feel epic! Play much better, listening to "Atlantean Sword" or "Wolf Witch". Really gets the blood pumping!
Those strange noises are the patented Arnie sounds of suffering (with an Austrian accent). I think they're quite hilarious and entertaining. If you'll see more of Arnold in the future, then you'll eventually hear more of this.
Classic fantasy writing. Robert Howard was a legend. He borrowed from Tolkein a little, but Tolkein borrowed from Chaucer and the French scribes from the Middle Ages. But Conan had everything! The princesses, the magic item, the evil lords, the quest, the companions - everything you needed for a good fantasy yarn. And the casting was great! Arnold IS Conan, the surfer dude (forget his name) looked like he really was a raider thief, and Bergman moved like a predatory cat. Mako is hilarious. It doesn't just hold up today, is dicks on 95% of todays high fantasy attempts. I got sick of watching the Hobbits crying their eyes out in every scene and and telling each other they loved them, or Legolas shooting 20 arrows with eyeball accuracy in mid air before sliding down the trunk of a giant elephant and landing without a hair on his disturbed. Absolute tripe. 1982's Conan was what a fantasy movie should be.
@@TheVanillatechNot true at all. Howard died in 1936. The Hobbit wasn't published until 1937. He would have had no idea who Tolkien was. Tolkien, however, did get to read a little bit of Howard.
Indeed. It's more meaningful to me as an adult than it was when I was a teenager. This movie actually has something to say about the meaning of power and suffering. Most movies made today are about nothing, or the memory of other movies.
"Nobody's doing anything, they're just lying there." Well, after the movie Caligula came out, Conan the Barbarian had to tone down the orgy scene to avoid an X rating.
@@ThagomizerI think it can be depending on how you look at it. Think of one singular thing that would give the film an 'R' rating, then think of another thing that on its own would also give the film an 'R rating and how both things are in the same film.
FIrst "certificate 18" movie I saw was Enter The Dragon when I was about 8 or 9., I had NO IDEA what the hell was happening through the entire movie. I saw Conan when I was 12 and understood everything. Got my Dad to make a woden sword and practiced for momths perfecting my lunge, parry and overhead chop... He eventually took the sword away and hid it once my brother sustained a cut ear and slight concussion.
If you ever thought if there was a real DnD movie - here you go. Warrior/Barbarian, Fighter/Rogue and a Valkyrie go on a quest to hunt down a snake king. PERFECT.
Akiro laughed at flowers because he was wondering why this massive, manly, 'roided-up barbarian would want to know where to find flowers. Conan said they were for a girl, but they were really to make him look like a hippie to help him infiltrate Thulsa Doom's mountain of power.
That's not a pirate, that's an Atlantean, and his sword--now Conan's sword, yoink!--is made of the finest steel. This has nothing to do with Conan's father or people, although Rexor (the really tall guy), who is the high priest, and second only to Thulsa Doom himself, kept Conan's father's sword after it was stolen.
Everyone loves Valeria. She's a believable badass regardless of her gender, which is a lot more than I can say for more recent characters who are supposed to be badass women. They aren't, but she is, sort of like Ellen Ripley. Looks like that was a good era for badass women, unlike the current era, which inspires nothing more than eye-rolling. 🙄
You can tell she was a professional gymnast / dancer. Her body is that perfect balance of femininity and strength, and she moves like a predatory cat, with that dancer grace and poise showing through. The part where she slides over the barrier to set the curtains on fire, that whole short scene, is crazy smooth. Didn't make a sound!
"Why does she keep saying that?" .. . Well, the EARLIEST FEW times I believe she's referring to the possible RISK OF DEATH in the process of their undertaken adventures, and the FINAL time (at 26:24) in reference to ATTAINING ETERNAL LIFE in the hereafter (being that she evidently had become an angel of some kind there). "Nobody's doing anything. They're just lying there (21:31) .. . Yeaa well hon, try another flick called Caligula (1979). Now THAT one won't let you down, I assure you!
She keeps saying "Do you want to live forever?" as a way of mocking death and the fear of death. This line has been used in several movies and stories. I think it's even a topic of a song by QUEEN ("Who Wans To Live Forever?")'From ancient tradition, the warrior who has no fear of death has been considered the most effective. On the flipside, warriors who faced their fears and died in battle without fear could "live forever" in the memories and veneration of their people. Similar beliefs and traditions have been held by many cultures all over the world.
What young Conan is turning is either a water pump or a grain mill. The girl who jumped into the snake pit was supposed to be the snake’s food. She was a sacrifice. What are they up to? cannibalism. The actor playing Subotai, Gerry Lopez, was a champion surfer. The wizard was played by Mako, a famous character actor.
The reason Conan get captured is because of the green medallion he presented to the guard (Conan didn’t know that a priest wouldn’t wear it). The guard knew something was off and let him pass anyway, but quickly pointed him out to Rexor and Thorgrim, who ambushed him from behind.
Dearly departed James Earl Jones gave Arnie a lot of acting advice while they worked together on Conan and really set him on the path to super stardom. RIP to a king of cinema🤴🏿
Why people are interested in this movie in the first place in the eighties ? it is based on one of the most famous and beloved fantasy saga : the Conan saga in books, written in the thirties by Robert E. Howard, who wrote numerous books on fantastic/Fantasy. He became a very influencial writter since the sixties for books and movies. The conan saga in books is fantastic, full of epic stories, action, sorcerers, demons.....big adventures ! he became king much later in the books. Schwarzy was not well known before this movie, as the star he is now.
Thank you for reacting to this, Dawn Marie, it's a great Arnie proper performance in his break-out role. R.I.P. James Earl Jones, he's left a lasting legacy.
this is THE most underrated masterpiece films ever made. it gets better each time you see it. you see more and more its wagnerian/frazetta artistry installed by the creators involved. its my top 5 fav films.
Fully agree. The cinematography is superb, the soundtrack is amazing, and the philosophy is surprisingly deep. Conan's simple act of dropping the sword at the end is so powerful.
This is the first film I ever saw on video back in the early 1980s, and was later the first film I ever bought on DVD. Absolute classic imo. RIP James Earl Jones who passed away a few days ago (9th September).
He makes those noises to show that in some ways he is just an overgrown boy. He is not as "invincible" as he seems. It's always better to give the protagonist some form of frailty.
Believe it or not, I think you are the first reactor I've seen who recognized Akiro as the narrator and teller of Conan's saga. At least no one else has ever mentioned it, prompting comments from viewers.
RIP, Mr. Jones, You were so much more than your incredible voice. A phenomenal actor who excelled regardless of the medium. You will be missed but never ever replaced.
6:30 Conan uncovers the tomb of an Atlantean King. When he says "Crom" he is using it as an experlative. His dad did not make the sword... it is hundreds of years old. The sword his dad made was stolen by the raiders in the opening scene.
Conan has the Atlantean sword but Skallgrim has his father's sword that is snapped in half but is finally used to kill Thulsa Doom. thereby bringing the story full circle
In the original source materials, Conan lives in The Hyborian Age, a fictional time period after the sinking of Atlantis, roughly 40,000 years ago. In the movie, Thulsa Doom is the last member of an extinct race of humans, which is why he has dark skin, blue eyes and straight hair. Because he's immune to aging, he's likely an Atlantean sorcerer who survived The Deluge while the rest of his people perished. He "searched for steel" because he was starting over and needed weapons. By the time Conan's an adult, he's established and doesn't need arms anymore. For several decades, there's been tentative plans for a final film in the trilogy called KING CONAN but it keeps getting derailed for different reasons, Schwarzenegger's age being just one of them.
The Crypt where he gets his sword, is the crypt of an Atlantean King. Atlantean Steel, from ancient Atlantis. And those are not doggies, they're wolves.
"Oh, I did wonder who you are..." The wizard Akiro is played by Mako, most well known today as the voice of Uncle Iroh from Last Airbender, was in a ton of stuff and always great. You'll recognize that voice again I'm sure. He returns for the sequel.
An epic movie with an epic soundtrack. This is Arnold breakout role. Another great sword movie you should see is Highlander. Rip James Earl Jones whos role in this movie in my opnion is better than his role as Darth Vader
Rexor was also at the snake temple in Zamora. Maybe you missed that (I realize you have to provide commentary as a reactor), but it made an immediate connection between what happened to Conan's people and this snake cult.
Well, Conan (Arnold) might not have blabbed and blabbed throughout the entire movie, but when he DID speak he DID utter some pretty GOOD, indeed even CLASSIC, lines (however few and infrequent). Also, THIS was still pretty early in Arnold's acting career and before he became a total Hollywood megastar and a lot of the stuff that 's now popularly characteristic of his LATER movies hadn't been established yet, like the elaborate stunts, action scenes, big effects, big explosions, and the heavy dialogue with cheesy catch-lines. It’s a little more artistic (though it's still essentially an action adventure popcorn flick), is darker toned, and has a more Euro quality (being it was an international production).
By keeping the comments to a minimum, it made the character more mysterious and imposing. Conan did speak more in the next movie and it made his character seem less impressive than in this movie.
Arnold has stated in interviews that he bite an actual dead vulture for the tree scene, over several takes, and had to rinse his mouth out with alcohol antiseptic after each attempt...
@@longfootbuddy We've gone full circle. I can't believe I lived long enough to see it. Before my time it was all about fighting animal cruelty. Movies killing them on screen or using dead animals or real human corpses. Now we back to only real dead people should play zombies in movies and fighting to go back to worse times.
Wow, What a classic! Am new to your channel but have binge watched half of your vids in last couple days, What a brilliant channel! The westerns ....wow! Keep up the good work......And please watch the rest of the Rambo movies 😊 x
This movie is one of my favourite fantasy films I've seen. Everything is perfect: the world, soundtrack, characters and the lore. Also James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom is epic villain. Rest In power! And also I like watch your reaction films, Dawn Marie! You're epic, You're Best!
Arny at this early moments in his acting career could barely speak English fluently (which is why he has so few lines), James Earl Jones gave Arny some lessons in enunciating and emphasizing his words while acting. So in a way without James Earl Jones we might never had Arny
Arnold moved to the USA in late 1968 and yes at that point he probably couldn't speak much English but I would say he was reasonably fluent by 1982 albeit with his thick Austrian accent. Pumping Iron came out in 1977 and I'm pretty sure his English was okay then.
This was the first film adaptation of the Robert E. Howard pulp novels of the same name. This was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first film role after winning seven Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles. His films before this include Hercules in New York, The Villain, Stay Hungry and Pumping Iron. After this are Conan the Destroyer and The Terminator. The implement that Conan pushes to grow stronger is used in Strongman competitions. The actor playing the wizard, Mako, is best known for his voice roles in Samurai Jack and Avatar: The Last Airbender
The warpaint in this case also serves as camouflage, to help break up their outlines under mostly dimly-lit conditions. That's why zebras and tigers and some other animals have stripes. And of course, it's supposed to look intimidating, although personally I find a sword being swung at me far more intimidating than makeup.
7:00 you cut my favorite part. Notice that he didn't have much clothes and was being chased by dogs... He gets the sword and in the next scene he is wearing furs... Dog furs!
Film facts: Arnold had to lean out to do this film, whereas Momoa had to bulk up! -The name of the soup was "split pea and HAND". -There was a franchise planned for Conan, like the Bond movies but after the sequel and Red Sonja under performed, it was scuttled. -The scene where Conan is drunk, was almost cut because the producer thought it lessened him but the director won out and it was kept in. -The swordmaster was the actual sword instructor for the movie. -The woman that is given to Conan was a pornstar who didn't know anything about the scene, that was to be filmed. Her reaction to seeing Arnold was genuine because that was the first time she saw him. Both Thulsa Doom and Conan's father are wrong. The strongest of steel will rust, the strongest of flesh will rot but the strongest of wills lasts *forever.* Conan survives because of the strength of his will and he overcomes/defeats Thulsa Doom because of the strength of his will. Also... Conan commits a huge blasphemy by praying to Crom for something. You don't ask crom for things, you thank him for the gift he's given you. Crom answers Conan prayer but makes him pay for it, for the rest of his life... And he's gonna live for a long time.
That's Arnold's own real blood in the cave scene, since he fell for real. He called for medical assistance, but the director, John Milius of _Dirty Harry_ fame, said no, it looks great, so keep shooting. 😁
Also, Sandahl Bergman lost a finger in one of the fight scenes. They drove her to the hospital & stitched it back on her hand. 3 Days later she was back, shooting another fight scene! And then you have the actress of Galadriel in Amazon's crappy RoP show, who needed counseling after shooting an action scene....
At first, Hollywood producers thought Arnold could not be an actor because he was too large and spoke with a thick accent. But the part of Conan was perfect for him, because the character is muscular and comes from a foreign land so he can be a big foreigner who doesn't talk much.
I love this movie and all its campiness. But the books they are based on (which are basically a compilation of stories from magazines) are some of the best fantasy novels ever written.
4:40 "The Wheel of Pain was a large grain mill that was powered by slaves. Their hands were shackled to the posts of the mill and they would continuously rotate the mill throughout the day. They were only freed from the wheel once they were bought, or once they gave up and died from the physical demand of the mill. After contributing nearly two decades, Conan was the last slave left still contributing labor to the Wheel of Pain, and he was soon bought by a large warrior named Red Hair. With no one left to operate the mill, it was shut down shortly after. " -Conan Wiki
This movie and Schwarzenegger role as Conan was written about in "Savage Sword of Conan," magazine in a summer issue in 1981. The Savage Sword of Conan was classic comic. It's magazine format allowed for more adult content i.e., violence, blood and a bit of nudity. John Buscema did much the art in the Early to mid-series, and boy could he draw a beautiful woman nude or clothed! Roy Thomas was the editor and primary writer. He wrote some great stories with easter eggs if you were knowledgeable. I remember a story in a character dying utters, "Is this the death of Rico?" which was a nod to "Scarface." 1932.
When I watched this as a kid on VHS around 100 times, I eventually persuaded my Dad to make me a wooden sword when he was working in the shed one day. I practiced for months with that sword, perfecting my lunge and parry and overhead chop. He'd eventually take the sword away, and hide it, when my brother suffered a cut ear and slight concussion. I knew then that I was the on the path of becoming a real barbarian. Found the sword hidden behind my Dads wardrobe and I kept practicing whenever I was home alone. For some reason my brother never wanted to help anymore...
Yep, and Dawn was asking what can Valeria do from Hell once she was dead. Well, Dawn found out. I've seen female reactors who really liked Valeria. She's definitely not your typical Hollywood female character. She is a fighter and how many other females came back from the dead to rescue their man?
This movie is a true 80s gem. On one hand the very epitome of camp, very physical and brutal, but also really touching at times. Arnold was in movies before, but 'Conan' was his breakthrough as an actor.
24:25 "He is Conan. Sumarian. He wont cry. So I cry for him!" Subotai was such a homie in that scene. What a true friend! Probably one of my favorite lines of the movie!
A derivation of "Do you want to live forever" is carved into the walls of the US Marine Corps Museum. During World War I, Gunnery Sgt. Dan Daley famously said this to the troops at the Battle of Belleau Wood. It's an ironic exhortation to be brave, move forward and fight. Because doing nothing is not going to let you live forever..
The actor who played Conan's father was William Smith, who was in a couple of movies with Clint Eastwood, "Every Which Way But Loose", and "Every Which Way You Can". And I'm not 100%, but I think this was the last, and maybe only movie of Sandahl Bergman's "career".
Sandahl Bergman was a dancer before she was an actress. She played a dancing "muse" in XANADU with Olivia Newton John. She played the villain in RED SONJA , also with Arnold playing the same type of character.
Fun Fact, when they were escaping the temple after resuing the princess, Sandahl Bergman (Valeria) actually wounded the last stunt man (23:05) stabbing him in the throat with her sword. The scene was left in as both actors stayed in character, but you could see that Bergman knew she cut the guy. He survived and all was well. Crazy!
Valeria talked to Subotai first to get his opinion to help convince Conan to leave, too, because she knew that Conan would be tough to convince, with the whole vengeance for murdering my family and my people plot thing he had going. It didn't work, anyway.
10/10 movie. One of my all time favourites, so underrated. James Earl Jones brought his amazing acting talents and helped to coach Arnie and some of the other cast members which I'm sure made a difference.
SHE was MY favorite screen BLONDE.
Lots of strong female characters before and after the 70s/80s.
You can tell she was a professional dancer and gymnast before acting. The way she moves through the orgy scene, as she stealthily creeps over the bannister to set fire to the drapes, she moves like a cat. Totally believeable that she was a thief.
"Conan! What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!"
Great movie...I hope Dawn loves it!😁
“That is good”
A quote from Genghis Khan
I've always preferred "For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm."
Everyone uses the one that sounds brutal but this one is much more so because he's moved past being the mindless beast of battle and he's realized a maturity level knowing he'll never know peace like he knew as a child.
The open steppe
A fleet horse
Falcons at your wrist
And the wind in your hair
IT IS AMAZING HOW IDENTICAL CONAN THE BARBARIAN AND BIG ARE.
Max von Sydow--the king who wants his daughter back--had a varied career throughout its 70-year span, to say the least. He did everything from high art like Bergman's The Seventh Seal to everyman's favorites like Flash Gordon and Strange Brew. He always brought a unique vision to every role he played.
The original exorcist too
He's also in Skyrim.
He's the "Three-eyed raven" in game of thrones. Along with nearly ever role ever for a well spoken older man.
He also had an infectious laugh.
I would like to file criminal charges against JJ Abrams for criminally under using Max von Sydow in Star Wars Ep 7 (the greatest waste of a great cast since Alien : Resurrection).
Crom is the god of willpower and self reliance, so prayer to him for help will usually get you punished by him some way, but because Conan's prayer was merely for his deeds to be noted "that few stood against many" he gained Crom's favour
you have to be nice to Crom she says LOL
@@Gealaiche For real, Crom appreciates a legit ballsy threat.
"Why doesn't your god have a statue?"
"Crom needs no form to be a god. It actually makes it easier to pray to him. Your gods require a temple or a statue to pray to each of them with. All one needs to do with Crom, is prop up a rock and start praying to him."
And if you pray to Crom he's just as likely to pile on more trouble to really test you.
Conan truly loved Valeria. He will not soon get over her death, if he ever will.

Oh god, no it doesn't.
Some parts do, some parts don't - that soundtrack though. If that ever ceases to touch the human soul then we are spiritually dead as a species.

"This has nothing to do with Conan's father or people"
Not entirely. The Cimmerians are descended from the Atlanteans, at least in the books.
You were saying, Dawn? 😏 Valeria did come back from the dead (temporarily, as a Valkyrie) to fight at Conan's side, just like she said she would.
Yup. Conan & Valeria. Kyle Reese & Sarah Connor. This is what love is, at least so the 80's action films taught me.
The director cast Bergman because of her dancing background rather than find an actress who would have to train/be taught to look more athletic.
@@ryanjacobson2508 That was a great decision for this part, and I think it's why her movements look so graceful.

"Why does she keep saying that?" .. . "Nobody's doing anything. They're just lying there (21:31) .. . Yeaa well hon, try another flick called Caligula (1979). Now THAT one won't let you down, I assure you!
I just left a comment, saying that ‘Do you wanna live forever’ is the Hyborian Age’s version of YOLO..
Mako was also the voice actor for Uncle Iroh from Avatar-The Last Airbender animated series.
The reason Conan get captured is because of the green medallion he presented to the guard (Conan didn’t know that a priest wouldn’t wear it). The guard knew something was off and let him pass anyway, but quickly pointed him out to Rexor and Thorgrim, who ambushed him from behind.

People don't realize this a fkn art piece.

Arny at this early moments in his acting career could barely speak English fluently (which is why he has so few lines), James Earl Jones gave Arny some lessons in enunciating and emphasizing his words while acting.
So in a way without James Earl Jones we might never had Arny
By James' will, Arnold was molded into the man he was meant to be... it's a beautiful RL parallel to the dark theme in the movie.
James' advice to Arnold is how James himself overcame a speech impediment in his youth.
Arnold moved to the USA in late 1968 and yes at that point he probably couldn't speak much English but I would say he was reasonably fluent by 1982 albeit with his thick Austrian accent. Pumping Iron came out in 1977 and I'm pretty sure his English was okay then.
@@daniellowenna3342 speaking English is one thing, but to use proper enunciation and inflections and stuff is another thing, it's important for acting
I get your point I'm simply responding to your comment about Arnold barely being fluent in English at this point.. Acting is something else.
This JEJ role made far more impact on me than starwars or lion king ...what a villan portrayal
The strongest of steel will rust, the strongest of flesh will rot but the strongest of wills lasts *forever.*
Conan survives because of the strength of his will and he overcomes/defeats Thulsa Doom because of the strength of his will.
Also... Conan commits a huge blasphemy by praying to Crom for something.
You don't ask crom for things, you thank him for the gift he's given you.
Crom answers Conan prayer but makes him pay for it, for the rest of his life... And he's gonna live for a long time.
Classic James Earl Jones, clasic Arnold, classic Sanddahl as Valeria? The perfect movie
A B movie with A actors, music, scenery. It is timeless.
James Earl Jones died the other day, so it's a good time to catch this.
That's Arnold's own real blood in the cave scene, since he fell for real. He called for medical assistance, but the director, John Milius of _Dirty Harry_ fame, said no, it looks great, so keep shooting. 😁
And Arnold did not whine and whimper but carried on. Like Viggo after he almost broke a foot kicking a helmet in LotR.
John Milius was also a script writer on "Apocalypse Now". did you notice that both have a cult leader who must die at his own temple at the climax?
At first, Hollywood producers thought Arnold could not be an actor because he was too large and spoke with a thick accent. But the part of Conan was perfect for him, because the character is muscular and comes from a foreign land so he can be a big foreigner who doesn't talk much.
Very timely with James Earl Jones’ passing. Also the film that launched Schwarzenegger to stardom.
