people that claim that humans are the bad guys in this movie are woke nutjobs that think there are 68 genders and how straight people are evil...
Michael Ironside - This guy has been in a lot of TV shows and movies since the 70's. The first place I remember him from is "Scanners" from 1981. Great actor, even in the bad movies (Highlander 2 ... cough).
A friend's sister was an extra in this movie. Some of the planet scenes were filmed in Wyoming. The crew had to chase away local wildlife before filming so deer and other critters wouldn't be in the shots.
You were almost right about this movie being a parody, Dawn. It's based on a very famous science fiction novel of the same name, written by Robert Heinlein and published in late 1959. The novel is a serious presentation of some of the author's political and military ideas at that time and was a huge hit for him. Director Paul Verhoeven recast the story as a satire of such beliefs, which may be why you found the dialog to be over the top. Loved your reaction!
I remember when I realized this is actually a dating and relationship story. Laid over a science fiction action film of all things. Who even thinks of that? Only Paul Verhoeven that's who and bless him for that.
Michael Ironside, who plays the teacher, also played Jester in Top Gun, and was Richter in Total Recall (another Paul Verhoven film). He's actually a great actor, but often plays the same type of characters (angry, harsh, tough characters).
Lol, when I started at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, it was a known fact that more than 50% of those that were in a relationship at the start would become single during the year's training. The guys would put their 'Dear John' letters on the platoon noticeboard. There was quite a collection just by the end of the first term (4 months).
The live action Voltron movie that'll be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber which stars Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn Toye will make the Starship Troopers movie look like a joke
Not only was this the last of Verhoeven’s sci-fi trilogy (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers) to date, but also the latest of his military trilogy (Het korp’s Mariniers [1965], Soldier of Orange [1977], and Starship Troopers [1997].
In the book his crime was both worse and better. Rico launched a simulated nuke too close to his squad members who would have died if it were real. They also wore powered armor in the book that made them look like the apes the instructor calls them. The book was definitely not meant to be satire, the author really was a veteran, and one story I read was that he was ticked at the hippy fans that were reading peace and flowers into his books, so he wrote this in your face pro military government story to get rid of them. On the other side; this movie was definitely meant to be satirical and this was a point missed by a lot of people.
Dawn, you may recognize the military armored suits the troops wore, as they were reused in Firefly in episodes like 'Train Job', that came from this movie!
Clancy Brown (the drill instructor) is also pretty great in 'Highlander', fantastic movie where there are very few actual Scottish actors... and one of them is playing an Egyptian😂
It's not a spoof movie, its a satire. Its supposed to be a bit over-the-top on the surface but it has a message underneath. Paul Verhoeven is great at making movies like this and RoboCop. He also made the movie Total Recall in a similar way, which also features the legendary Michael Ironside!
Robert Heinlein has always been one of my favorite authors of all time. I had read the book years before the movie came out. Graphically they did not do the infantries armor suits that were sort of like the HALO game types but then you would not see the actors reactions.
Whenever possible the military has separate facilities for men and women but on he rare occasions when they can't it's basic courtesy to ignore each others nakedness and honestly once you get used to it it just becomes normal. Nobody wants to get cought perving and get labelled a creep your chances of getting more than a look become less than zero if you do.
Starship Troopers isn't a parody of anything, but director Paul Verhoeven did include a lot of satirical elements. I'm not sure what author Robert Heinlein would have thought of the film.
Lol @ when she asked how he could kill it after it looked at you and then proceeded to describe how they should hollow out a couple bugs to wear them like a morbid and gory bug suit lol
The Commanding Officer was played by Michael Ironside, whom I got to know a bit in the early 80s. He is not related to Jack Nicholson. His "normal" behavior does not take away from his general badassery.
Interesting that you included 'Firefly' in the list of productions this reminded you of. The military uniforms are the same in both, that was one of the tricks Joss Whedon used to save costs for 'Firefly'.
So, before even seeing the reaction, I think one should be aware of that the film and the original Heinlein novel have totally different political viewpoints. The movie is more or less a satiric parody of the novel. The novel is well worth reading.
A very off the mark satire. I mean even within the world of the movie we see a lot of societal features that are not fascist at all. Such as amazingly transparent media (going so far as to show gory bodies on the battlefield) and Rico’s antiwar parents living in such a lavish home instead of going to political prison
@@ProtossWannabe1984 »The characters of Starship Troopers, he [Verhoeven] said, were "fascists who aren't aware of their fascism". He said: "If I tell the world that a right-wing, fascist way of doing things doesn't work, no one will listen to me. So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world: everyone is beautiful, everything is shiny, everything has big guns and fancy ships but it's only good for killing fucking Bugs!"» The media supposedly was inspired by the nazi propaganda film Triumph des Willens. There's a lot of nazi/fascism symbolism in the movie, and the movie is meant to be opposed to fascism. Heinlein and his novel (long time since I read it) I think is more leaning towards a sort of libertarianism, and Heinlein espoused responsibility as the basis of citizenship in many of his novels..
@@dolf370 "...right-wing, fascist..." Tells you everything you need to know. The typical Hollywood left is pretty hard left, and they like to call the right "fascist" because the right is more nationalistic; But fascism is authoritarian nationalism (if I'm somewhat oversimplifying), and the hard left is arguably more authoritarian. No, neither of these groups are really fascist, people just fanatically want to paint their opposition as monsters. Also, you can't be a fascist who doesn't know he's a fascist; It's a pretty obvious thing if we're talking about ACTUAL fascists.
9:54 - "Is this other humans they're shooting, or is that aliens?" - It's just a training exercise using human-shaped figures as enemies. It was very likely created before humans encountered the bugs, so naturally, they'd use human figures as the enemy. Besides, it doesn't really matter what the enemies look like, the point is to shoot the enemy, and avoid being shot. The figures could be square blocks and would serve the same purpose. 11:33 - "Well I hope that wasn't important." - Every reactor says that. :) 26:23 - "Imagine being able to shoot a meteor out your butt." - The bugs don't shoot meteors out of their buts. They shoot blue plasma, and that knocks meteors out of the asteroid belt. The rocks are already in space, the bugs just give them a push. 30:06 - "I feel bad for it. Why?" - Because humans are the aggressors. Human colonists encroached on the bugs' territory, and the bugs wiped out the invaders. This lead to war, and humans thinking that they have the right to commit genocide simply because they consider themselves superior to the bugs. 30:13 - "It's like a computer game I'm watching." - Actually, there are a couple games based on this. One is a real time strategy game with an isometric view, and then there's a first person shooter, where you can play one of the soldiers on the ground, facing off against hoards of bugs. 30:25 - "OK, so I just checked when the credits were rolling, that Michael Ironside is the guy that looks like Jack Nicholson." - This is one of the rare times when he doesn't play a bad guy. Probably 90% of his movie roles have been bad guys. There are a couple live action sequels to this. Casper Van Dien returns in the third movie to reprise his role as Rico.
Fun reaction, as usual! I agree with you about the wonderful design and effects work -- a visual treat! So far as the film's message, yes, you largely missed it, so I hope you'll find this explanation helpful: The part of this film that younger reactors miss (the tonal stuff that confused you) is Verhoeven's satire of a fascistic future society (very prescient). The dialogue isn't "cheesy" or "cringe," necessarily, but satirical, at least in its intent. That's why the officers in this film look so much like Gestapo/SS officers, why corporal punishment is commonly applied to "Citizens" and "Civilians" alike, and it's also why the society's news/information spots are characterized by violence and propaganda. This society is so martial, you're not even considered a full "Citizen" unless you serve in the military (the military that invades other planets and attempts to wipe out the inhabitants, who are sentient, feel pain and fear, etc.). Westerners who came of age in the post-9/11 era have the disadvantage of being raised during a time when the West was increasingly embracing fascism, so this stuff looks more normal to them. That's why younger viewers don't always get the satire in this film. But to your credit, Dawn, on more than one occasion while reacting to this film, you demonstrated that you are capable of empathizing with the Other. In another generation or so, that kind of sensitivity will be even rarer in Western societies... if WW3 doesn't do us all in first.
This is taken from the 1959 sci-fi novel of the same name by Robert Heinlein. As a kid in the 60s I loved reading science fiction and read this book when I was about 12. The movie was meant to be a little cheesy. If you read the book today you'd likely find it a little cheesy, but consider that it was written in the 50s. If they'd made a movie of it back then it'd seem cheesy today. I think that Paul Verhoeven intentionally giving the movie a cheesy feel was brilliant.
Not only am I a huge fan of this movie growing up as a kid but I love all Paul verhovens movies and... coming next week starring the legendary Johnny rico, casper van dien himself is starship troopers extermination a 16 player co op first person shooter game for ps5 and omg am I so excited !

Michael Ironside, who plays the teacher, also played Jester in Top Gun, and was Richter in Total Recall (another Paul Verhoven film). He's actually a great actor, but often plays the same type of characters (angry, harsh, tough characters).
25:56 Rico repeating Lt. Rasczak's introduction speech doesn't have the same weight without Michael Ironside's gravely voice.
The mobile infantry armor was reused in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Firefly series.
"Why are we all dying?"
Dawn's insidious plan at work 😎
#beautifulandevilgenius
This is my favorite reaction of yours to a movie so far 😂
33:17 "It was almost like I was watching something that wasn't real."
Like a movie? 😁
'Come on you apes, you wanna live forever?'
Michael Ironside is a badass and a legend!
"Why is it always in the butt?"
Because of commitment, valour, and the unwavering belief in something greater than oneself.
Dawn, it was definitely the "Best Giant Space Bug Movie" ever.
Thank you for showing me another example of the number 38 in films and shows. Look for the 38!
Dawn, you may recognize the military armored suits the troops wore, as they were reused in Firefly in episodes like 'Train Job', that came from this movie!
Firefly just repainted the Mobile Infantry armor.
@@jimgassor8473 from a film about satire of fascism to the power fantasies of a resentful nerd
@@josephwallace202 its not satire to fascism, thats the modern woke interpretation
Why should I trust some chimp who can barely type?
Hooting, gibbering chimp noises. As usual.
It is from the same director as robocop, so that should explain a lot.
@30:08 that was actually said by a medal of honor award recipient.
The bits that look like Firefly is the helmets. Firefly used leftover helmets for the Alliance Troops, (Purple Bellies).
"Facts cant offend people" -Dawn
Me:😍😍😍
The actor playing the guy who "... just wants to kill bugs sir." Plays the preacher in the series The Walking Dead.
Michael Ironside has chunks of guys like Jack Nicholson in his stool.
lol
It's meant to show how sexless and empty these people are until commanded to feel something by their authority figures, even sexuality.
The teacher also appears in Top Gun and Total Recall. He was the voice of Sam Fisher on the Ghost Recon game franchise.
I will now and forever view this as the alien "butt" movie. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Next Reaction film Troy (2004) Spartan vs Troy 👍👍
Interesting that you included 'Firefly' in the list of productions this reminded you of. The military uniforms are the same in both, that was one of the tricks Joss Whedon used to save costs for 'Firefly'.
*👱🏻♀-Poor GIANT blob!😆*
This movie is directed by the same guy who directed Robocop, Dawn.
*Paul Verhoeven🪳*
So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world: everyone is beautiful, everything is shiny, everything has big guns and fancy ships but it's only good for killing fucking Bugs!"»
The media supposedly was inspired by the nazi propaganda film Triumph des Willens.

@@ProtossWannabe1984how many serious scholars of fascism have you actually read?
Did the stinger go up his butt? Not sure how many times I've seen this movie but that has never crossed my mind... ever 🤣
Dawn should watch Outland starring Sean Connery (1981). It's like High Noon in space.
Just Yes, another instant like just for watching this classic Dawn!
How many times did Dawn say "butt" in this video? Is this a new obsession?
9:54 - "Is this other humans they're shooting, or is that aliens?" - It's just a training exercise using human-shaped figures as enemies. It was very likely created before humans encountered the bugs, so naturally, they'd use human figures as the enemy. Besides, it doesn't really matter what the enemies look like, the point is to shoot the enemy, and avoid being shot. The figures could be square blocks and would serve the same purpose.
11:33 - "Well I hope that wasn't important." - Every reactor says that. :)
26:23 - "Imagine being able to shoot a meteor out your butt." - The bugs don't shoot meteors out of their buts.
Glad you enjoyed it, definitely check out more Paul Verhooven's films
Dawn watching a boy movie: "I didn't know it would be so visually appealing."
Not only am I a huge fan of this movie growing up as a kid but I love all Paul verhovens movies and... coming next week starring the legendary Johnny rico, casper van dien himself is starship troopers extermination a 16 player co op first person shooter game for ps5 and omg am I so excited !
This movie is from the 1950s sci-fi novel by Robert Heinlein, considered a top ten sci-fi story and a big influence on everything that came afterwards.
lmfao i burst out laughing when you said the food looked like tubby custard as thats what it reminded me of many years ago watching this LOL
