Imagine being on stage then and this guy sounds so good. Not just his playing but the drums… back then so many drummers would have crazy kits sounding like shit. To me that’s where Simon was above. An engineer already. I recently replayed Out of the Blue live album after installing a new HiFi system at home… oh boy !!!!!!
Exactly!! He really stood out at that time, with sound and playing. I also remember when I stood right behind him a couple of years back when he played with Protocol - it was such a surreal experience being less than 2 meters behind him. Ahhh, and that kick drum on Out of The Blue, (quite a hefty sub on that kick).
@@sturla75I got to sit close to Simon a bunch of times, notably at the Baked Potato, such a small place and seeing him in such a context made a huge difference on how I went on to play gigs in small music bars. Being able to maintain such control and dynamic in a limited volume environment… And at the time he was hitting it harder😅 he’s gone softer in recent years.
@@ikevmusic Fantastic!! I haven´t been to Baked Potato (hopefully someday), but yeah, seeing him up close is really something else. And yes, he hits a lot softer in recent years - as opposed to for instance this clip. But yeah, I also came back from the close-up show with a fresh perspective regarding dynamics.
This must have been the same time and occasion he was playing solo with Art Blakey and Cobham. Recording is commented by SP himself at Drumeo, well worth listening to, and also funny. Speaking of SP and Drumeo, does anyone know if there will be a video where SP hears and plays a song for the first time?
Yeah, I heard about that story with him just being asked to play solo alongside Blakey and Cobham. Funny you mention that Drumeo thing, I thought about that myself if he did a "first time" track. Would be cool to see him really a "session mode" modus operandi. A lot of the guys and the tracks they choose are very - for want of a better word - click baity. And I think Simon would have just tried to play the song and not overplay like so many have done. It is entertaining and funny, but usually not too musical. I dug Chad Smith´s version though. Just started playing on the first listen.
@@sturla75 Yes. So what song will we choose for SP? I would like to recall that SP had strangely not heard "Maiden Voyage" before when Toto recorded the album "Through the Looking Glass". "Tom Sawyer" would have been fun, but he's already played it with Smith and Weckl.
Sorry buddy, I hadn't even noticed it was posted by you until I'd hit the send button, but technically, I was correct, it was a very current kit at the time he was playing it. Thanks for posting that video, a very youthful Simon. I nearly bought his Ludwig Octaplus kit in London, after he'd switched to Tama, but I'd been playing a Phil Collins style Premier Concert tom kit for a while, and wanted a move back to double headed toms, so I passed on it. I still find you have such a great ear for picking up the subtleties and nuances of Simon , in your playing. keep posting your videos, I love 'em.
@ Thank you so much. I had to laugh when you posted that comment about "it would have been no age age at all" :-) Spot on! Wow, you nearly bought his Octaplus kit? That is I guess the very same kit he got shipped to the US and have done some recording with (the brown one). Love that kit and those records he did with it. Thanks again for the comment on my playing and videos. Really means a lot.
@@sturla75 Yes, it was the Mahogany Cortex wrap Octaplus, it was for sale in a London drum shop, but I just didn't have the space to house it. Must have been back in the 1980s. I suspect the shop couldn't sell it so he shipped it to the USA
Wild young man, flexible and full of energy. What I don't really like is the plastic sound of these super Bassdrums without any deep shell resonance. They sound like plastic coffres, would be nice if he tried some open tuning for a real thunderstorm, cause he got the chops
Love simon's sound in the 80's and 90's
Me too!!!😀😀
I think Simon' s the most special drummer ever. He is at another upper lever, noboby like him
Yes. I think so too. Just amazing!!
That kit sounds fantastic! 1983 or 2023, amazing consistently
It sure does.
The great Simon!!! Legend!! Amazing drummer! Hug from Brazil!
Yes indeed. Cheers!
Incredibile 😮solo. Grande Simon 🙌
Yeah Simon always amazes me.
Even though Simmon Phillips is old now, he still has that same energy for playing drums 🥁 🪘
Yes, tons of energy still. Hope to see him live somewhere, somehow this year.
TAMA best sounding drums ever! Since today!
Yes!! My favorite brand of drums!!
Best Drummer of the World for the next 1000years
Yeah. That is one great way to put it.
That was crazy.
Indeed!!

The kick drum on the Out Of The Blue album is deadly to a sub🤣🤣
@@Rythym4god Yeah, it has been a while since I´ve heard that one. Have to have listen to it again now.
Mon batteur préféré une référence power Simon
My Drum Hero 🥁
Mine too
Simon and Neil Peart are the reasons I played Tama Superstars. Didn't make me play like them, though. 🙁
Hehe. But the very best thing is to play like oneselves and find one’s inner voice. But yeah - I know what you mean. 😀
I really loved Neil's concert toms from this era. The ESL drum solo was the best I have ever heard xD
Same! I had the early 80’s Tama ads on my bedroom wall.
😂😂😂
Yes! Those super high pitched little concert toms sounded amazing.
great good superplay🎉
Not many people do😊

If you take away the 10" (smallest tom) it looks like Neil Peart´s red Tama. Simon is a master, but Neil was a god. 😍
Yeah kind of. Big fan of them both of course.
Simon is better than Peart !
Easy now.....Neil knew Simon could play anything he could.
Just review Simon's resume.
If you want his sound...Remo ambassador top and bottom..wide open
Sure! That is the way to go. For myself, I like to change it up a little bit.
Simon's been tearing the drums a new one for decades... Definitely not an '80s solo: he was at least a decade ahead even back then.
Yes, and so much energy he has back then.
Absolutely fantastic .. his solos got a lot more boring since then.
Something special about these old clips.
That was not a vintage kit, it would have been no age at all
Very good point. 😂 my bad.

Personally I like Ginger Baker with his Ludwig kit…no one could work a set of double bass drums like Ginger Baker..
Lars Ulrich maybe
"Ginger Baker is the best" people can gfts😅😅
Hehe yeah I never understood that.
Rather see hands from behind or top of kit instead face but great indeed ..played tama myself
Yeah sure. But cool to see nonetheless.
