  • Welcome to the first installment of "In The Room With Reitzas"
Over the years I have collected dozens and dozens of videos of special moments throughout my career as an engineer and mixer. About once a week (maybe more, maybe less), I'll be uploading these moments for everyone to enjoy.
I thought I'd start off with a session I did with Producer David Foster at The Record Plant.
We did the 1st U.S. record for the Irish family group "The Corrs" and had awesome drummer Simon Phillips add his magic to 2 songs.

His wide open drum sound is absolutely the best.

Simon Phillips is perfection. He brings a live show energy to a studio setting. Groove, attack, chops, dynamics and pure joy. The world is a better place with him in it.

Simon is a total monster. He never disappoints. This video is a true gem. This is the pinnacle of what it means to be an artist. What knocks me out is how much David Foster was into, it bobbing his head in time and he’s not a man easily impressed by anyone. Simon was not one of his regular “go to” session drummers in the 90s but he obviously knew such a rhythmically complex and very progressive instrumental track needed someone special and of his caliber. I love the person who said “that’s the shit right there” when he ripped off that monster fill. Like a true master though he was able replicate his part perfectly. for the “punch in” to correct the one figure “dah-dah-dah” or “and-a-one” rhythm figure.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this figure. I felt kind of bad for Caroline Corr having to watch someone else lay down the drums but I’m sure as a pro she knew it was what was best for the track. David Foster does whatever is called for to get the track he wants though. He had Jeff Porcaro replace Danny Seraphine on Chicago’s ‘Stay The Night’ and Carlos Vega play ‘You’re The Inspiration’ on Chicago 17 when Danny just wasn’t cutting it at that phase in his career. RIP to Jeff and Carlos.

That's how it's done! This is a showcase of skills that extremely few drummers in the world can match. Absolute monster chops combined with a feel and a groove second to none.

Simmon is the best in the business.
He went professional at the age of 12.
Not quite a Teenager yet and he was already working as a studio drummer and working with notable recording artist.
Simmon was the drummer in his Father’s swing-dance band.
He’s lived a remarkable life and became a sought after producer and engineer.
When Simmon moved to Las Angelas California, he drummed for the popular band ToTo…20-22 year’s, during this time he built his own studio and actually produced a few ToTo album’s.’
Simmon worked with other musicians on their recording projects.

great video, thank for posting. He comfortably sits at his throne, behind 16 drums and a dozen cymbals, puts on his headset, ques up the track, closes his eyes, and drives the song to a place that maybe no other drummer can. He seems to lift the energy all around him. The Master

Not sure that appeared on any Corrs recording. Sounds a bit experimental. Definitely Andrea on vocal and likely Sharon violin Jim some keyboard work? A very talented group. This is their first record. Foster had a lot of players in for the sessions. Playing live is one thing and recording quite another.

"That song needed a special rhythm section, that's why we invited [...] Simon Phillips on drums. He brought in this gigantic drum-kit and I thought 'Wow! What in Gods-name are all those drums for?' It takes enormous discipline. He's brilliant. But I had one problem. I had to learn that part for the live-shows. That took quite some effort, but I can manage now. Yes, I also play that complicated break, although I do it my way." (Caroline Corr)

I would love to see him play the music he recorded for Ian Gillan and Jon lord. Both awesome performances.

One of the best fills I ever heard, at 1:44 . Not too fast, not confusing, just right on the money. And although it probably sounds more appropriate for the band in the mastered version, I prefer the one from this video, more raw, more alive. (For the master version, search for "Toss the Feathers (Instrumental)")

Seems like they ended up cutting down on room mics afterwards, I dunno.

Simon does a similar feel song to toss the feathers on Encore, Legends and Paradox. Tribute to ELP... For whom he was thought to be the first choice. But Carl Palmer was better known... At the time. Checkout Hoedown on that album.
