As a Finn, my relationship to Swedish language is "total waste of time". I've been forced to do 6 years worth of Swedish studies and the only time I needed to use Swedish in last 25 years was when I completed the final exam of Swedish studies.
Pretty much this. I live in the Swedish part of Finland and I haven't had to use Swedish at all as the Swedish speakers either speak Finnish or English!
I'm 35 years old this year so it's been a while but when I was on 7th grade (that's where we start learning the swedish language) pretty much all of my class "hated" the idea of having to learn a language that we might not use. A few years later when I got into work life I realized how handy it is to have the skillset. Of course we were young and stupid hahah :) I've been learning a lot by just listening to my co-workers who have been finnish/swedish.
When I was in high school(Lukio), I did quit my Swedish courses on my 2nd year as the law was changed and we didn't have to take Swedish finals exam anymore. Few years later I moved to Sweden and it was rough in the beginning. I learned myself Swedish quite a much and have even worked with the language since.
Ice swimming is definitely more fun than bars. Listen to this: think of the times you have traveled and everything was good and think of the travels where things got all wrong. When you're being robbed of your passport and shoes in the middle of nowhere and then it starts raining, it's not fun when it happens. But that is a real memory you're gonna tell everyone, bc it's an adventure. Adventures don't feel good at the time, but they create memories. Fun is overestimated. Do things that feel uncomfortable and you'll create greater memories on your way.
That video was so hilarious! And I laughed together with you :D :D You have been here long enough to understand those jokes well. Aren't we Finns good at sarcasm and self irony? :D
Skiing, walking, running, building iglus, making snow angels, ice skating, eating sausages outside, building snowmans, making snow angels. Unlimited things to do, more than on summer 😂 you can also play like mölkky outside, whynot? Also you can be inside without melting, burning candles, having family movies, be under 6 blankets, playing board games 😊 so much to do!☃️❄️
Swedes see finns as silent, barbaric and drunk. Finns see swedes as jolly, modern and gay. When I was young, I resisted swedish in schools. But now as an adult I really would like to speak swedish. I believe Helsinki does seem clean but for finns it's absolutely disgusting compared to, for example, Kuopio. Happy birthday!
As recently as the -80s and -90s, Swedes considered Finns to be aggressive, depressed drunkards. It probably stems from when tens of thousands of us moved to Sweden in the -60s and -70s in search of better job opportunities, and of course we took these special features of our culture with us. They e.g. called Finns with the barking term "Finnjävel" which means "Finnish devil".
All my adult life I regret that I didn't study Swedish properly. I haven't needed it at work. And there are no Finnish-Swedish people in my circle of acquaintances. I would still like to know the language that is in basic education for everyone when we have a bilingual country. And it is very difficult to justify the importance of the Swedish language to a child when there is an attitude that you have to learn Swedish, even if no one wants to study it. Thank God for small problems 🙏
Why would you want to waste time on a useless language? We are only "bilingual" because Finns are so cucked :D The origin is Swedes at some point controlling Finland and having Swedish speaking nobility own our land. I love this country and having no real problems. But Sweden has plenty Finns too and they aren't forcing our language on their people :D In the age of AI translation all languages aside from English are kinda useless unless you want to study them as a hobby. Maybe Chinese could be an exception but still not even close to warranting a valuable slot in school. Would literally be SO MUCH BETTER if we removed Swedish and had people go to school an hour later for better sleep.
Happy birthday 5 months ago! :D Your reaction was hilarious, I laughed with you. My relationship with swedish is conflicting. It is an easy language and i feel bad not knowing it. I did study it, of course, because we have to, at alla levels of studies. But since i dont ever use it, i forget the vocabulary. But then, what i do remember it helps me with all the scandinavian languages a little bit. Also i dont know how i feel about it being mandatory to everyone in finland. It is only used in the coast really and keeping it here by force is pretty artificial and political. So i dunno really what my opinion is.
I feel it's just fine if people think we don't exist - less people to interact with😆 What comes to Swedish, it's so easy that if you have any command of English you learn it in a month.
Learning Swedish at school was just gigantic waste of time. 3 years of "studying" which was our near retirement age teacher who was almost all deaf just reading newspaper for 3 years and giving us all 5 on the school certificate and if we made too much noise he was throwing a chalk at us. You can guess how well we actually learned Swedish XD
To Sweds we are "their socially awkward eastern brothers". Don't know about the rest, Finns don't think other Scandinavians, we only have Sweds. Thanks Chico Muya for great reaction for that therapy-video. Take care.
I did that in basic school, and regret now. All those mandatory hours of swedish class I slept through, I could've learned a new language, since I have to show up anyway. Now, I don't support swedish being mandatory in school, there could be a choice between different languages instead of it. But until then, take advantage of learning a new language while you're there!
You can draw an east-west line. Going west that line, alkoholism gets less and civilization becomes more. Going east, alcoholism and barbarism gets more. Swedes regard finns as alcoholic barbarians, finns see the same in russians. Russians regard the west as civilized. Similarly finns see Sweden as civilized and developed. This line you can apply as well in the middle of Europe.
I believe in theory that there is not US, there is just praery and mountains and it is just something English say that we others wont go to there... The tea party etc.... Sounds like English Conspiracy....
12:01 Just one problem here. There are no Swedish versions when you go further from the coast. There's no Swedish in sings in Lahti, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Rovaniemi etc. Only Finnish. What's that all about?
👩🏼🌾🍓 Hello there, @KaiMarcad! In answer to your question: Finland has two official languages: Finnish and Swedish. The Swedish-speaking, as well as the bilingual part of the population live along or close to the shores of southern and western Finland, whereas the Finnish-speaking population shares the coastal regions with the Swedish-speakers and also occupies the inland part of Finland, the northern and eastern portions. The entire country is divided into counties and cities which, according to the percentage of Finnish- and Swedish-speakers, are designated as one language counties or bilingual counties. A county where all or a majority of the population speaks Swedish as their mother tongue has signs either only in Swedish or showing Swedish at the top of the sign. In the Åland islands, all signs are only in Swedish, since the islands official and only language is Swedish. The opposite is true for cities or counties where the population speaks only Finnish, or both Swedish and Finnish. In other words, if the road or street signs are only in Finnish, that means that the inhabitants only speak Finnish. If, on the other hand, the signs display both languages, Finnish on top, the majority of the inhabitants speak Finnish, but there's a minority with Swedish as their mother tongue. When a person lives in the area, or moves there, he or she will have to register themselves with the magistrate or local authorities, giving their address and other data , including their language.
6:51 I have found learning Swedish language to be pointless for me, so i skip it (I did not study the so-called in "normal school" when I was a child, and studying Swedish was optional for me too). Hello, please how did you manage yourself to survive when you was jobless in Finland? Can I have your Facebook? I'm planning to come there. Thank you. Yannick from Cameroon.
Am so lucky, for not born Finnish. I dont have to study Swedish. I get an option to pick any other language. I still dont understand. Why are they forcing to Kids to learn Swedish. There is no benefit. What so ever. I mean, half of Swedish population knows English. There is not like massive Jobs available all over the planet with Swedish speaking skill. English is more useful. Its like, we have to to do this. Just because, Swedish is our little brother. So he doesnt feel left out. Am been nearly all my life in Finland. I havent once see anyone use Swedish to their benefit. NONE. Everyone speak English or Finnish. Even you meet a Swedish, they would rather speak English to Finnish.
Do you really think people have to learn Swedish only so that they can go to Sweden and talk?? That's absurd, if that where the case then the learning would have ended a long time ago.
If you already didn't know, the Finnish language was a major source of inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien when he created the elvish language Quenya.
So here the meme finland sounds like elvish comes from lol

No vittu aijaa vai
😂😂 "Perkele siihen et koske saatana!" is legendary, you have to watch that bear video.
I've never seen the full video, but it almost broke me! Holy shit!
It is even better video where there's first a Canadian man asking very politely bears to go away, and after it the Finnish man shouting that 😀
even bears dont eff with angry Finnish man LOL
Perkele has been voted for the best finnish curse word time and time again. No wonder the bear ran away...
old info, but in 2019 Finland was the 8th lowest alcohol consumer in the EU
That must've changed during the pandemic 🤷🏻♂️

That’s why Turkey didn’t ratify Finlands Nato membership right away because they were not sure what is the point of a sea joining Nato.
Hahahaha!!

Things to do in winter: skiing (downhill), snowmobiling or racing a car on ice track.
Sure, if you want to have fun, but there are other kind of things to do as well such as skiing (cross-country), ice swimming and kalsarikännit.
Uphill skiing sucks! Or perhaps it's just because I'm a beginner.
Learning swedish should not be manditory. It should be optional.
Köszönjük! Szuper videót! ( thankfully, great VHS 😀👍)!

The traditional way view sweden is "gay". Of course most people don't really do that anymore but mandatory swedish is still hated in schools
