- Tintagel Castle is a rocky outcrop on the Cornish coast which has long been associated with the legends of King Arthur and Merlin. The Extreme Archeology team need to negotiate the rocky cliff faces to discover the truth about this site. Can they find evidence of inhabitation between the occupation of the Romans and the English medieval conquest?

The self proclaimed “leader” of this expedition telling the geophysicist that she has wasted her time was uncalled for and completely unprofessional, he is absolutely why this show didn’t last more than one season. Crying worthy

Mmm, I would have to agree - to a point. Geophysis do tend to get a hard time from archeologists, most often because they lack the experienced eye to quickly interpret what they are looking at.
The series was recorded quite some time ago, and sadly a fair amount of misogynist attitude and thinking was still in evidence, resulting in the rude, unprofessional and dismissive comments we witness here.
I would like to believe that this situation is now less common, but centuries of male dominance is difficult to eradicate completely :(

Good grief, he’s obnoxious! Sends the women to do all the hard and dangerous work and then has the nerve to say, “the pottery shards WE’VE found” the stress on WE. And his attitude towards Meg’s efforts are entirely unacceptable especially from a bloke who has been resting on his posterior all day. If what she’s spent her time doing is worthless what value can we put on whatever he was doing?
Completely agree! However, I'm glad she got to be there when the trench found a wall and pottery that placed it in the 5th century. Of course, he didn't apologize to her, but she did get the satisfaction that her expertise was validated.

I know this area very well. It is a lot scarier than it looks, and it looks scary. Kudos to all involved.
Something that tends to be overlooked in British archaeological sites is where did the occupants get their drinking water?
I suspect the deliveries of goods to the site would have been resolved without having to rely on a wharf. A water cart with wooden containers would be needed year around, a route for a water cart would have been more than adequate for amphoras of wine and oil.
Or they used the "wharf" to bring in the water, as well as the fancy olive oil?
The "jetty" looks like a good sheltered fishing spot. Mediævil castle, inaccessible from the land, a sheltered fishing spot with levelled areas would be the obvious reason for the steps.
Thank you for these videos, it's hard to explain how edifying they are (compared to so much rubbish). I look forward to watching quality stuff like this at the end of a day's work.
The overly dramatic background music is so annoying. It's always a clue that the producer wasn't convinced that the story wouldn't be interesting enough.

Just WHO thinks they know enough to restrict excavation of such a fascinating site to an area 1 x 2m !?

The National Trust. Depending on the scheduling of that site, and it definitely looks Schedule I to me, the bureaucrats and pencil pushers apply restrictions. This is to preserve the archaeology of the site for future research, when techniques may be less destructive, as well as to criminalize people just going up there to dig up whatever and however they want. Think Schliemann bulldozing through Troy, destroying everything to get the goodies, then lumping all the goodies he found into a single cache, even though the stuff came from multiple layers of occupation, then telling the world he "found THE Troy". Those restrictions, I gather, are very very important.
How many times do they want to recycle these old Docs.

A jetty is a wooden platforn projecting over water. This narrator needs to be told about the words "dock", "quay" and "landing".

That dude telling the resistance-reader her time was worthless caused me to turn it off. It's like he's bringing Gordon Ramsey to the dig and poo poo's her detailed explanation of the value of her scans. That guy never seen again amidst the pantheon of British celebrity archaeologists, unlike Alice Roberts who has done tons of shows since this weirdly themed Rappel and Dig show.

Claiming that any hole drilled into rock must have been done after the start of the industrial revolution is perhaps the most idiotic thing this program has said.
The ancient Anasazi in North America routinely drilled holes by hand and the drills still exist.
The quarries where the stones that built the pyramids were cut have drill holes. Whether mechanical or by hand we do not know.
The ancient quarries of the Inca have drill holes.
Imagine being perfectly fine with the idea of a contraption to offload goods from a ship but denying the possibility of something so simple as a hole drilled by hand or contraption into stone.

After a while the fact the men just turn up to pontificate and berate the women becomes just a bit tiresome. Many comments here are upset by the Welsh guy's condescending tone - I gather there was direction for him to come off as jokey, but the blatent male female divide just comes across as chauvanism.
