I'm a Texan. I know country. Whether you believe Chris is country or more blues/soul, you're right either way but I can tell you that he only gets played on the country stations, not on the pop ones.

I'm a Southern Bama girl and the real country songs are blues country. Women down here can't say no to anyone that can sing like this. We just melt like butter. Nothing turns us on more than a smooth talking country singing rough and tough cowboy with that sweet teddy bear heart. Lol seriously. Men could land any woman of his dreams if he had the qualities. Heck even if he couldn't sing then he could go further with turning the radio on and grabbing her hand and pulling her close to dance with her. If you're familiar with Motown R&B classics, its obvious that they took the lyrics to "Tennessee Whiskey" and gave it a new arrangment & the same beat & chord progression as Etta Jame's "I'd Rather Go Blind." Its unmistakable. In fact, if it weren't for the twangy one string guitar riff it wouldn't sound Country at all. Came together real nice though straddling the fence between both genre's. Whoever produced it knew what he was doing.

Chris is someone who is underrated in today's country scene. He's been around the industry as a songwriter for a long time and wrote some of the biggest hits for some of country's biggest stars (George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, etc). He blew up in 2015 after finally releasing his own album and has continued to ascend. His voice is gnarly (as you know) and has a lot of blues, rock and outlaw country influences in his music. I've seen him perform twice and his live performances are even better than his recorded lol. Such a humble guy that simply loves making music with a guitar in his hands. Great reaction gents.

This particular brand of country is a mix of blues rock with a Southern twang...you're a bit spoiled by starting with Chris Stapleton as your lead in to country, as he's insanely talented and his music is a great mix of styles...if you want to dive deeper, you can get into some George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, Clint Black, Chris LeDoux, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and I could keep going on...I'd be more than happy to put a playlist together of some classic country songs, including some of the best female country artists of all time as well, and you could just go down the line and react to them individually...

When my dad was a kid in Texas they listened to Western music. People in the East listened to Country. There was a distinction.

Probably because this is not country music, but more so blues than anything.
A lot of people dont know that this is a cover of a David Allen Coe song and if I remember correctly, he paired those original lyrics with the melody from Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind," and this is the glorious result.

Oh come on. Country Blues and Blues Rock are often inches away from each other. Yes, this is the first, but it's no big deal mislabeling between those two, because the connective tissue (the Blues) is usually the strongest element in both, and the Country or Rock aspect are often more about the personal aesthetic of the performer.

When you Say Nothing At All by Keith Whitley.
Keith had one of the best voices ever for country music and died at a relatively young age. True country has a bluesy/southern rock vibe to it. The new age country is a lot more generic with snaps and beat machines.

Southern rock.. that used to be a genre. Same thing lynard skynyrd.. or Eric church were part of. Problem is these days country is pop and southern rock doesnt exist... these days it's just pop and not pop

other country rock bands: poco, new riders of the purple sage, the flying burrito brothers (featuring the late and heartbreaking gram parsons), pure prairie league -- these were all bands in the early to mid '70s that country rock comprised at the takeoff of the genre. there are current descendants, but they've evolved into their own sounds now, not the same thing. and not to be conflated with southern rock: that's a whole 'nother thing (and includes the allman brothers, little feat, lynyrd skynyrd, and zz top), although the marshall tucker band stands pretty firmly between them.

I agree these songs are great but country is about a story and Diggin’ up Bones doesn’t do that as much as Three Wooden Crosses but Diggin’ up Bones is still a great song
Country music is uniquely American ... Born out of the southern experience in America ... where country music (roots in Scottish Irish immigrants), southern rock, rythym and blues all merged together. It's story telling, instruments and sangin'.
One of earliest pioneers of southern gospel, blues rock n roll is Elvis Presley who was a big influencer of The Beatles.

You must be awfully young to say this is pure country. Pure is Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, George Jones or Merle Haggard. Pure Country is "twang." Chris is country soul or blues. Chris "warbles" too much to be Pure Country. Reba McIntyre was the first person who used that warble in her voice.
Lindia Pain I meant he’s the best pure country artist of this current age of country music. I know all of those people you mentioned are in face “pure country” but not of this decade.
