      Actually it's misrepresented. The phone won't hit you at 60mph+. The phone is already traveling the same speed as the train when it is realesed. The phone slows down due air resistance. The speed it hits a rider at is whatever the train speed is at minus the phone speed or how much the phone slowed down relative the trains speed at the moment of impact.
      If an iPhone struck a human head at 60mph+ I guarantee the phone would be halfway implanted in the skull.
      Still it can cause serious injury and his video is great at explaining why to listen to the safety rules.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@CrisGarcia6 depends on the element in question, if it's meant to have at most zero-G then it won't, but if the ride has an element you feel your shoulders pressed against the restraints (I hope you get what I mean with that... you feel upside down for real) then it can indeed fall, depending on pocket.

    I was a ride operator at Cedar Point in the 2017 and 2018 seasons (I didn't return in 2019 because my boyfriend surprised me with a platinum pass). I was once running Cedar Downs Racing Derby and a girl took her phone out. I went into the spiel to tell her to put it away, and she did. She then tried to take it out again, and the phone flew out of her hand and SMASHED on the concrete. It was the best thing I'd ever seen. When the ride ended, the girl went to get her phone, saw it was in pieces, and glared at me. I went into the spiel and said, "Cedar Point is not responsible for anything lost or damaged while riding."
    One more story: I was working Ocean Motion and when the boat was at its highest peak above the water, a phone fell. Somehow, it landed on the rocks instead of in the water. When the ride ended, the person who owned the phone ran off the ride and jumped into the restricted area to get the phone. The ride sup called security so fast.

      I love Movie Park Germany for this. They are very strict about not filming on rides, especially on their Intamin Gyro Drop. Before they start the ride the Operator tells everyone over the Speakers that it isn't allow to use your Phone or a Camera during the ride.
      During the Halloween Event in 2017 the Ride start and about 5-10 m on it's way up the entire thing stops, the ride op over the speakers so everyone on the plaza and in the packed queue line for one of the mazes "I told you guys less than a minute ago that it isn't allowed to use your phone on this ride"
      People on the ride had to hang there for at least 10 Minutes before a Technician arrived to reset the ride back to the starting position. That ride has those horrible "Seats" where you really only have a big support thingy between your legs. The culprit was facing the plaza during all of this. Phone still in hand.

    I remember once, spending a day at Knott's Berry Farm and i forgot that my phone was in my back pocket. I thought it was in my purse, which was stowed safely on the side. Well, the seats on Hang Time actually have a gap between the seat and the seat back, so of course, my phone slid right out on that 90 degree vertical lift. no one was hurt, but i sure as hell learned my lesson. I remember asking the operator for it at closing time, and when i saw it, i just felt so awful. I'm glad I didn't hurt anyone, but i usually tell fellow riders that it isn't worth the risk at all; just put it on the side, and keep everyone safe.

    I was riding Diamondback in 2009. Back row. I had been hit with things in the past while riding. I saw something rapidly approaching my head from near the front of the train as we were going over the second hill. I put up my had to protect my eyes and ended up catching someone's cell phone. As soon as we hit the brake run, I could hear a kid in the front row really freaking out about losing his phone. As soon as our restraints were locked I walked over to him and handed it back over. He wasn't holding it or shooting video. It simply fell out of a unsecured pocket, which is just as worse. He gave me a hug and said, "Thank you so much! My mother would be upset if I had to go to her and explain that I lost another phone on another ride". Another phone????!!! Really? Times have changed so much as there were many years where taking big cameras on coasters was acceptable. Some parks still allow on-ride photography but not like it used to be. I am planning on uploading some older SFMM POVs I recorded in 1995, during a time when parks allowed that stuff and had no problem with cameras on rides, but people were safer about that stuff also.

    As a Seaworld (San Diego) ride operator I strongly relate to this. Cellphones and other loose items get lost in the restricted areas of a ride and guest would ask us if we can retrieve it for them. The only way the collect an item is to stop operation (cutting the power to ride), retrieve the lost article, contact mechanics to restart it, and test run before operating again. That entire process takes time that just wouldn't be fair for the people investing their time waiting in line to ride. Once reported lost and found then we go in after the park closes. Just leave it with a non-rider or a locker nearby to avoid losing it on the ride. 😕

      I still recommend wearing cargo shorts over your gym shorts, because it prevents your phone from falling out of your gym shorts' pocket in your cargo shorts. That's what I do. I also would recommend getting a phone case and a screen protector from all the bumpy rides. There are multiple ways for your phone to be safe from on ride roller coasters.

    Aside from the fact that there's a decent chance bringing your phone out could injure or kill someone, I don't get how people can just bring their phones on rides at all after paying a fortune for them. I refuse to bring my phone on rides unless I have it in a zippered pocket. Otherwise, it goes right in the bins. As a ride op, I've seen someone's phone destroyed on a kiddie ride after asking them to put it away, so I can't imagine how destroyed they must be from bigger rides. Just leave it on the platform or in a bin, and if you don't want to pay for a locker when they're required, you could even just hide it in a bush.

    That’s exactly what I preach and practice on every ride I’m on. I agree with you 100% and it’s incredibly selfish for someone to pull their phone out on a ride. I’ve seen two incidents with a phone, one on The Voyage and one on Gold Rusher at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Both had potential to do harm, but were evaded by a great ride op at The Voyage and by myself and a friend on Gold Rusher. We got hit by a park map on the ride but at least it wasn’t the phone. I also threw the book at some vloggers who were doing the same thing in their video at Magic Mountain. Thanks for having this video here GP to Enthusiast. It’s something that every park goer should know and follow to a T. If they don’t, they’ll likely get sued for damages, break down a ride, or lose a phone. All of which I don’t want anyone I experience at an amusement/theme park

I thought I got stung by a bee. On the brake run, no bee sting...it was a hair pin from some chick further up in the train. It left a welt. Obviously this was an acident but if a hairpin did that, imagine a mobile phone? I do have video i've shot on coasters with video sunglasses that have been secured by a sports strap but never have I nor would I take a hand held camera or mobile phone out to shoot a ride. That stuff becomes aprojectile weapon at those speeds. Oh- and at another park, had the bejesus scared out of me- was riding Nitro at SFGAdv. and some dude took his t shirt off and was holding it up-I didn't see this...aftert the turn leading to the back of the park, I saw this white shirt go flying by and for a second thought someone fell out, took me a couple seconds to realise it was just a t shirt, not a person. But what would have happened if that flew under the train and hit the wheels?

    I remember standing in line for El Toro at Great Adventure, watching a train come down the first drop. The train went up the first airtime hill, and a bottle of water flew _way_ up into the air, a good 40 or so feet above the top of that hill. It came back down within the layout, fortunately, after about a 3 or 4 second flight.

He told them that no matter what do not take your phone out but of course that was ignored and a girl took her out. The way she had it placed was this:
    - she was holding the swing thingy (the thing that connects the seat to the ride) like an ordinary swing
    - as she was holding the swing that way her phone was in her hands
    I’m not sure who but someone told her to put her phone away and when she was about to she forgot that the chain was in the way so it flew off.
    Her phone hit a lady that was just sitting down and I believe she had to go to the hospital.

      Space Mountain actually only goes at 35 mph. But even so for Disney, it’s best not to keep your phone out on Disney rides because it can slip from your hand at drops (Splash Mountain, Expedition Everest), and sudden movement (Dinosaur) can make your phone fly out of your hand.
      Also, dropping your phone in Flight of Passage is a bad idea because it’ll likely stop the entire ride.

    the newest ride in phantasialand (f.l.y) has a super strict policy on loose items (for good reason), which they enforce with metal detectors, but they also solved storing baggage really well, so imo that’s a win/win (though it does come with increased need for more employees on that ride)

    When I went to Kings Dominion last year, I went to get in the queue for Twisted Timbers and they had to shut the ride area down for about an hour and a half because they had to clean up blood from someone who got their noggin cracked open from a flying cell phone. Even right before the queue, there's a plexiglass box full of destroyed cellphones that give the warning not to bring them on the ride. Some people don't listen smh

    As a younger child, I did bring my phone out on a ride once. Although I didn’t drop it, I now cringe at the fact that I did it in the first place, especially considering I’m now an enthusiast. However, this didn’t stop me from bringing my phone on rides in my pocket as I thought it wasn’t an issue. Then I had an incident on Freedom Flyer at FunSpot where my phone came out of my pocket and dropped to the ground. Luckily this was only a 40 foot fall, it didn’t hit anyone, and my phone was somehow okay and didn’t take any damage. However, since then I have not taken my phone on a ride since unless sealed in a zipper pocket. I got very lucky, and I will not be making that mistake again.

    unfortunately, when i was around 12 years old i was one of the people that pulled my phone out on a rollercoaster. i didn’t drop it nor did it stop the ride, because i pulled it out before the ride started. i guess WEM didn’t have a policy against phoned on rides because the operator didn’t say anything to me, but as the ride started i realized i was fucked if i didn’t put it away ASAP. so i put it between my thighs and pressed them together as tight as possible to prevent it from flying away. luckily my phone was fine, but i knew it was a HUGE mistake because i couldn’t even enjoy the ride due to the fear of my phone flying out and hitting something or someone. don’t do it people, not worth it at all. EDIT: it wasn’t mindbender or one that goes upside down, even my 12 y/o self wasn’t *that* dumb

Some people are just the type of people that feel like they need to film everything themselves, no matter if there is a better alternative out there like a camera mounted to the ride giving you free better quality footage, or a zillion examples of that same thing shot in way better quality online.

I remember one person crying as the device had photos of someone close to them who had passed away. Sadly it was completely destroyed. • @Ravaxr
      @Ravaxr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few options: Bolting a rig directly to the car is the safest and gives the smoothest video, but may not always be possible. A harness with the camera on the chest, or a strap system around the wrist so even if knocked unconscious the camera will not slip off the hand are other options.
      In any case, getting written permission from the park to film is commonplace, and getting it requires proving your rig will stay in place. Parks like Cedar Point do not allow it full stop, and do the bolt on method with an empty train themselves.
