Cant attack him without him sweeping my ass right after, no matter how fast i try to dodge. You can go under him when he starts breathing fire, but not when he does it from a distance. And i dont know how you can attack from distance with charging forward. Id just stand still and swing out after the air if i tried. I really hate the bosses in this franchise
Witchers aren't supposed to kill dragons. Its against their code. Geralt only slew this one because it was to defend himself. That's why dragons aren't in The Witcher 3.

Strategy for this boss : Absolutely need the roll upgrade in the combat tree no matter what tree you focus on. Without it, it's near impossible to get in to attack and out without taking damage. Also, always have your shield up.
every game today is made for multiple platforms so they have to be easier... mouse+keyboard is just to good for these kinds of games so today games seems easier by default

HERE'S HOW TO BEAT THE DRAGON: I just got done beating him. Took me about seven tries (on hard). You can watch the video but I was impatient. I rather have someone tell me what I should watch out for. So here it is. This is mostly for the rooftop battle, cuz I got to the rooftop on one try I don't know luck or maybe the dragon is weaker in the tower idk. I'm a mostly swordsman class with a secondary focus on signs. I found having the dodge perk on swordsman tree very helpful (dodge a distance of 100% or something. 1/2). Just like with any boss for any game it's always about figuring out patterns. 1. First things first, use enchantments and potions. Remember to watch the timer when in battle to apply enhancements again once it runs out. Pay attention to when Quen runs out also. Obviously keep using quen or you'll die. 2. When you first reach the top, Quen, then quickly stand back far enough away from the dragon and do a quick hit, once Geralt starts to perform that animation start jumping back, the dragon will try to swing at you. Sometimes it's a small swipe, sometimes she lunges, shouldn't matter if you do it right. You should do a quick hit, jump back successfully dodging the dragon's attack, and repeat. I was able to chain this back and forth a few times and got her health down quite a bit. This will only work in the beginning (at least for me). Your going to have to find the sweet spot, stand back too far when you begin your attack and you won't hit but you will dodge, stand too close you'll hit but won't be able to dodge. Eventually you won't be able to chain it (it'll fly up or crawl down the side of the tower) and so after that once it returns to the tower edge like before just hit once, dodge and then just wait and see what the dragon does next etc. 3. More on attacking it. Now for the rest of the battle keep a good distance (use your intuition) move to the right or left and you will see the dragon trying to crawl towards you. Try to circle a good distance away as to keep it crawling towards you then eventually try to create a good distance directly the opposite of it so you can use the same strategy I talked about in 2. Now you must attack by basically using the same strategy, except you won't be able to chain it. Stay far back. Always dodge backwards, dragon facing you straight ahead, quick attack, then dodge backwards. Anything else will most likely get you killed. 4. Things you should watch out for. Sometimes the dragon will fly up and away, if it breathes fire just stay back far as possible, sometimes just being far back will be enough but most times you will have to try to run and roll away from the fire. If it stands up but doesn't fly away and just breathes fire, try to get close to it (you won't get burned once your close) so when it comes back down you can do a heavy attack (from it's side) and then jump away so if your the dragon you see geralt jumping straight away from you. 5. Sometimes the dragon will duck under and start crawling around the tower, when this happens you can do one of two things. 1) Pay attention to where the dragon is you can see it a little bit, and keep moving to the complete opposite side of the roof as far as you can while it circles around, keeping a 180 degree distance from you and the dragon when she's circling you. The dragon will be faster than you so instead of holding the stick back to get away you'll be having to move right (or left depending on which direction your running) on your stick to get away from it, roll just walk whatever you feel you need to do to make the distance. It'll try to swipe you with it's tail eventually, if your far enough it shouldn't hit you but just in case, dodge when it swipes anyways. Or 2) Keep close to the dragon while it's circling you, you'll be able to see the dragon more and it'll be easier to not lose sight of her. Keep moving right (or left) and the dragon will pop up to swipe at you and just dodge. I did both these things when fighting. I found this whole part in general to be very tricky, I would lose track of it sometimes and just make my best guess to where she was, only once I think I was wrong and actually died because of it. 6. Sometimes the dragon will fly up and away and then charge at you. You should be able to tell when its gonna do that. When you see it fly up, try to move back away from it and then to the side. You don't have to run so far back (in fact don't) just don't be super close. Never stay in the center you will get hit. Sometimes I would just time it right so I don't even have to dodge, dragon would charge and it would just miss. But dodge anyways just to be safe. It will probably try to charge you again a second time, in that case do the same thing, or it'll start to breathe hellfire down upon you. I think those are the only two options... 8. Lastly, If you get hit (therefore lose quen) try to get back far as possible (or far back enough) in order to use quen again. Eventually you'll get to the point where you have no vigor left and you'll get hit and you won't be able to immediately use quen. In this case, just keep avoiding the dragon until you get a chance to use quen again, shouldn't take that long. For me it would be like 5 seconds each time. Or perhaps you don't get hit and quen's effect wears off, keep track of the the timer so you know to use it again. Good luck.
Damn I thought there might have been a trick to this dragon but it is exactly how I was killing it. Such a slow and painfully not fun boss. Why does the witcher franchise do so much right then fuck up so badly in other areas. Ok I shall quen chip away a little by little and roll a lot, I hope witcher 3 has better boss fights.

My Geralt had crafted/found most of the best equipment in the game by this point - and between the armour and runes, my combined fire resistance made me competely immune to the dragon's fire...making this boss battle hilariously easy.
I saw this video but i killed the dragon with a completely opposite strategy, Since i did not have the equipement he got, i buffed the PG with anti-fire potions and equips and Signs buffs, and hit the dragon with IGNI sign. avoid the dragon, especially dragon breath and launch igni. it tooks a while but it works.

I had sword enhancement,potions, tried with igni, , max upgrade, bombs, played 10 minutes, all the potions ended, hit him so many times it had to become dragon patê - it barely took him any health. Very frustrating. And - on easy!!! It has to be glitched somehow or idk. I hate this. Had to kill Dettlaff on deat march to calm my nerves ... Lol.
Why doesn't the dragon just fly in the air, and shoot flames from there? Seeming as you only have a sword.... It would also be kinda first nature for it, since It's a creature that you know... FLY'S!
The dragon can kill in one strike in Dark mode, found this out the hard way. I almost had it, HP down to 5% when I became complacent and let my Quen dissipate, than bam, 850 damage. No armour can stop that.
I played this on dark difficulty which has the hardest combat because you can die easily. But It all depends on your build and gear. With the best gear on dark mode (Kingslayer) and a build focused on doing damage with swords you can defeat the dragon in a couple of minutes. "The operator" an optional enemy was where I had to give up and don`t kill it because that one is really really hard. The strategy for the dragon is simple: quen, heavy hit and roll. The ability that gives more roll distance is very useful here. You can also drink some potions before the fight to make it even easier. There is also a way to upgrade an armor to absorb fire damage.
Thank you for this video. Once i got to the top floor, i got killed many times by the dragon, so i ran around the outer rim and hit the dragon with the IGNI (FIRE) sign. I defeated the dragon with this tactic.
The best way I found was to knock as much of its health down while inside the tower as you can before you climb on the roof. Use a silver sword with enhancements maxed out, and your fire resistant and damage potions drunk maxed out, basically use allot of Guerilla Warfare to beat him.
@BeenuZz same here. it took me about 15 to 20 minutes to kill the dragon on hard level. when I look at the video and see it's 7 minutes, i thought to myself " How in the world can he did it?". And good video Quaft0, can u remember the name of the crafting scroll or where to find it?
@bulldog51 No, I've only done one playthrough and I chose to rescue Triss instead. I think I'll do a second playthrough soon and try out some different paths.
All you have to do is use shield, stick close to the right side of its head while in the building because its glitches, then when you get up on top of the building use heaps of throwing knives and when it flies overhead doge foreword and to the right or left, stick close to it when it breaths fire and doge a lot.

Of course it was on Dark mode and it needs some getting used to but you don't even need the improved Quen for this to work. Quen will allow you to take 1 hit no matter how hard, without taking any damage. Good thing about the Dragon is that he launches you straight to the other side of the arena after hitting you, so by the time Geralt is standing on his feet again you can immediatly reuse quen, because your 1 vigor has most likely recharged. Practically the Dragon cannot damage you
I'm sorry if the title spoiled something for you, but the reason I named the video this is because the dragon might not be the final boss depending on your choices in the game.
If you have maxed damage Igni and a high amount of vigor, you can just machine-gun fireballs at the Dragon to defeat the final phase in about a minute.
I watched this in preparation for the battle, but it turns out the damned literally does no damage to me. I'm just sitting here, on hard, stabbing her over and over. Gotta love being a completionist.
He's not.... He's using his silver sword, although he is dealing very little damage even though he specced full swordmaster. I think he's using a superb meteorite sword, which is pretty sub optimal. Deithwen(44-48, 3 rune slots, +25% to large creatures and gargoyles) is much better, especially for this boss, and Addan Deith(45-50, 3 rune slots, 30% bleeding) can be looted for free from one of the gargoyle chambers.
I did this on dark difficulty and I had the second set of cursed armor only because I ran out of money to make the last one complete, long story short, the dragon could one hit me, two If you count quen, but I did it, it was very rewarding.
Yeah same, thought I would need the dragon loot to complete the 3rd cursed armor, guess I missread.... Anyway, 2nd armor was enough with good roll mechanics! lol
Than people say that The Witcher 3 have better combat, just because have lock on. The lack of lock on it is make The Witcher 2 so fantastic, the combat is fast, the player can move on every direction that he wants and also, have to aim precisely. Because this, I prefer the Witcher 2 combat system, this battle show it.

ah you missed the part where you get 2 shotted on hard mode lol. 1 broke your quen, the 2nd strike deletes you while you're still down on the ground if unlucky.
This Dragon is pretty fucking easy if you're willing to be cheap and use quen . . . Quen, then heavy attack, then try to roll away so that his melee attack doesn't hit you. If it doesn't -> good; if it does -> doesn't matter, Quen will absorb the blow In the first case attack again, in the latter case cast quen again and repeat the process . . .
Oh yeah, he uses a basic steel sword in all cutscenes, even ones where it doesn't make any sense. It seems strange that you need to hit stronger enemies at least 2-4 times with a fully runed Forgotten Vran sword and a bunch of strong abilites and mutagens, but in cutscenes Geralt 1 hit kills them with a basic steel sword with no runes.
I killed her spamming ighi, throwing knives and rolling. I hit her with my sword only one or two times.=) Though i built my Geralt as a "sorcerer", so it's not surprising at all.
People who say its buggy, its just because your pc sucks. Either buy a better pc or laptop or get it on xbox where there are no bugs, and install to xbox hard drive for instant load times :)

I just finished it the second time today in hard mode, I didn't have that upgrade but there was this one potion that increases the range of your sword

I am 5 years late but a little while later they had a fantastic fight with Letho the Kingslayer
Since I'm an avid Souls player, this boss is fun enough for me

I had all my potions on and an oil wailed on him for 10 minutes and his health barely moved an inch

I had my Igni maxed out and after an hour of learning how to fight in on the roof, I just spammed Igni on the dragon and it finally died.

All you have to do is use shield, stick close to the right side of its head while in the building because its glitches, then when you get up on top of the building use heaps of throwing knives and when it flies overhead doge foreword and to the right or left, stick close to it when it breaths fire and doge a lot.

Of course it was on Dark mode and it needs some getting used to but you don't even need the improved Quen for this to work.
Quen will allow you to take 1 hit no matter how hard, without taking any damage. Good thing about the Dragon is that he launches you straight to the other side of the arena after hitting you, so by the time Geralt is standing on his feet again you can immediatly reuse quen, because your 1 vigor has most likely recharged.
Practically the Dragon cannot damage you

That dragon was Sascia - I did not finish her, just turned her human form and she surived.
Yer well Barack Banana, I did manage to kill it thanks to this video showing me where to hide to avoid the fire and Letho was very easy to beat.
If you have maxed damage Igni and a high amount of vigor, you can just machine-gun fireballs at the Dragon to defeat the final phase in about a minute.
Just gotta run back and forth, poking the beast.
I watched this in preparation for the battle, but it turns out the damned literally does no damage to me. I'm just sitting here, on hard, stabbing her over and over. Gotta love being a completionist.

He's not.... He's using his silver sword, although he is dealing very little damage even though he specced full swordmaster. I think he's using a superb meteorite sword, which is pretty sub optimal. Deithwen(44-48, 3 rune slots, +25% to large creatures and gargoyles) is much better, especially for this boss, and Addan Deith(45-50, 3 rune slots, 30% bleeding) can be looted for free from one of the gargoyle chambers.

I did this on dark difficulty and I had the second set of cursed armor only because I ran out of money to make the last one complete, long story short, the dragon could one hit me, two If you count quen, but I did it, it was very rewarding.
Yeah same, thought I would need the dragon loot to complete the 3rd cursed armor, guess I missread....
Anyway, 2nd armor was enough with good roll mechanics! lol

Too sad there is no huge/gargatuan dragon fight in Witcher 3... Wyvern in simply not enough.

I always have problem with camera angels in witcher games .
I found defeating the Dragon easy. Turns out I had over 100% fire resistance, so I actually healed when the dragon attacked me with fire breath. :P

Than people say that The Witcher 3 have better combat, just because have lock on. The lack of lock on it is make The Witcher 2 so fantastic, the combat is fast, the player can move on every direction that he wants and also, have to aim precisely. Because this, I prefer the Witcher 2 combat system, this battle show it.

ah you missed the part where you get 2 shotted on hard mode lol. 1 broke your quen, the 2nd strike deletes you while you're still down on the ground if unlucky.
This Dragon is pretty fucking easy if you're willing to be cheap and use quen . . .
Quen, then heavy attack, then try to roll away so that his melee attack doesn't hit you. If it doesn't -> good; if it does -> doesn't matter, Quen will absorb the blow
In the first case attack again, in the latter case cast quen again and repeat the process . . .

How to kill dragon on medium. Use potions, oils, then fail twenty-thirty time to kill it, say fuck it and go on easy.

Oh yeah, he uses a basic steel sword in all cutscenes, even ones where it doesn't make any sense. It seems strange that you need to hit stronger enemies at least 2-4 times with a fully runed Forgotten Vran sword and a bunch of strong abilites and mutagens, but in cutscenes Geralt 1 hit kills them with a basic steel sword with no runes.

People who say its buggy, its just because your pc sucks. Either buy a better pc or laptop or get it on xbox where there are no bugs, and install to xbox hard drive for instant load times :)
It looks like Vran armour to me. Can't get it till 3rd chapter and you have to complete the Mystic River quest-line
