      Composit Shot?

  • @LadyCinnamonGirl

    I worked on "Pleasantville". The burning tree scene are all shot in b&w. We had a poly over the fence and, with proprietary software, then pulled out yellow on one luminance level. In the long shots the yellow on the house was done the same. The tree was done the same way with and more complicated poly over the fire a a little smoke and several different luminance levels pulled in different intensities of that same yellow and one one level slight red which you see better in the scene where Tony walks out the door. In that shot there is a poly on his shirt that has the yellow pulled out more subtly. You would be surprised how many plots are in these shots with little things of yellow are pulled. The effect is supposed to be the fire is the only thing in color, but the color does reflect off of the b&w world. They didn't want a lot of oranges or reds just that hint of red and different intensities of yellow

    Clint got it almost right- We shot in color and then selectively desaturated to get the desired result. There was no keying to speak of, ALL mattes were created with roto, though within the roto shapes there were some threshold controls that governed what happened inside that shape. We used a combination of Shake, (before it had a UI), stuff we wrote, and some colorizing software that we inherited from a vendor that went out of business. I was the VFX supervisor and also was in charge of building the pipeline and implementing our vision for what turned out to be the first film to use a digital intermediate. It was Michael Southard (aka paintboy) who made all the keyframes for the color decisions. Anyway. still loving your channel!! I could go on forever if anyone cared :)

      So who should I believe. Random youtuber A who says it was in color then selectively desaturated or random youtuber B who says it was shot in B&W with special software to add in colors.

    • @WirxawTanev
      @WirxawTanev 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@crepperwlp Well... that's kind of exactly the point. Bay's Transformers were corny teenager action movies and were quite good for that reason alone... until they went imbecilically degenerate on propaganda.
      And, yes, perhaps the "good pet robot" design of Bumblebee is indeed far more restrained and pleasant. Better than a robot pissing on someone, I agree.
      But the plot and the narrative have somehow stooped even lower than The Last Knight and... well, it kind of overshadows whatever design progress Bumblebee had. For all intents and purposes, I wouldn't mind the old BB as long as the movie itself is at least remotely entertaining and not a soap opera.

      The explosions. None of the explosions react to one another, i.e. the smoke lingering from one explosion does not get affected by a nearby explosion's shockwave. It's actually pretty apparent when you look at footage of similar things in real life, but it's not in Avatar.

    I have no clue how they did any of the CG visual effects, but I immediately recognized this one. I'm so glad you guys covered it, it was so damn clever for 1930s cinema. The guy who invented it was named Karl Struss, and he first used it in the 1925 movie Ben-Hur to show Jesus healing a group of lepers. He then did it again in the 1931 adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde, and it was so well-done that it helped the movie win an Oscar.
    But *this* version of the trick, with the dramatic tearing off of the wig, is easily the most effective version I've seen yet. Great stuff.

      @@conneroneill8506 Fury Road is a masterpiece of storytelling. Rather than having dialogue, as is customary nowadays, it relies on visual storytelling to propel the story. You'll notice there's a lot of specific cuts and scenes solely focused on characters reacting or performing actions, framed beautifully, all while being a 2 hour non-stop action chase movie. It simultaneously accomplishes character arcs for multiple characters, world building, and much more. The funny thing is that I never even thought about these intricacies when I watched the movie in the theater the first time; I just sat perplexed and stunned.

      @Gōdon Gurando Many of the gravity effects come from building sets in a giant rotating wheel/tube. Other scenes were faked in a smaller scale manner: The floating pen in the shuttle was stuck to a sheet of glass and then plucked off the glass. It was all done so masterfully.

    • @DanteDevonshire
      @DanteDevonshire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@matman000000 Because WoW looks exactly like that ôo I don't understand the complaints regarding that movie. The cut down the lore, yes, but I think it is impossible to pack lore out of hundreds of gaming time into a two hour movie. The costumes, the broad shoulders, the laughable tiny heads in comparison to those bulged muscle bodys... nothing but accurate (I actually often roll my eyes when I start WoW after some pauses and look at those cringey body measurements and those larpy amour. ^^' But all together that is part of WoWs charm and they packed that shit into the movie wonderfully. Actually holding the actual cinematics next to the movie, the movie could be an extremely long cinematic. Well done in my opinion.

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DanteDevonshire That stylization works for the cartoony graphics in the games, but it looks horrible in live action. The new Disney live-action remakes have the same problem. They take a colorful cartoon and try to recreate it in real life, resulting in a fake-looking set where everything is too shiny and perfect.
      Also, the problem with the movie wasn't a lack of lore, but a lack of story and character development.

    On the topic of the blue makeup trick, this technique predates cinema, it was used for the first time in theatre in the 1880-1890s in theatre productions of 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' where he transforms on stage with special gas lamps illuminating him (not color projection as he interacted with other people on stage). This was the first time 'transformation' was conceptually something people encountered. People had a hard time understanding what was going on, but no worries they were making crazy money with their production. But it blew people's minds much so that during the period that the actor was arrested and tried for a number of incredibly gruesome murders, nobody could believe that someone could just transform from a normal man to something diabolic as he did.
