The main difference between Germany and Korea reuniting is time. When Germany reunited, it was like first cousins, many of whom had living memory of one another. Korea has seen at least 4 generations pass, a much stricter separation, and there are very few alive who personally knew one another. They are basically strangers now. The languages are even starting to differentiate. It'll be a lot tougher

As someone from Québec, independence is no longer really likely here because the federal government essentially allowed Québec to already become pseudo-independent anyway. We were recognized as a ''nation within a united Canada'', we control our immigration (which is why we almost exclusively get immigrants from French-speaking countries now), we have different laws from the rest of Canada and we just generally do whatever we want. The RoC (rest of Canada) tend to complain about this of course but they still don't actually do anything against us. Of course, that could all change very fast but right now, we essentially get to have our cake and eat it too by being part of Canada but still governing ourselves in any way that actually matters.

This is misleading, Quebec has immigration authority over « economic immigrants » which is like 10% of immigration to the province. Sure we are officially recognized as a nation by the Canadian constitution but that did not grant us any more power. Quebec still has yet to sign the constitution

As a Quebecer, the idea of joining the states comes from a political party called « Party 51 » (51st state) but it’s a fringe party that gets maybe like .01% of votes in a few more conservative regions. Other than that our independence movements are mostly fully autonomous difference sometimes is with economic ties to Canada (sovereignty by association) or complete economic independence

The Rebellion of 1837-38 in the Bas-Canada (Québec) AND Haut-Canada (Ontario) was motivated by republican ideals. It transcended linguistic barriers. The aim was to break free from the british crown, and become an independant republic. Canada being a constitutional monarchy even to this day, the Québec independance movement sees itself as a natural successor to the Rebellion of 37-38 as it supports republican ideals, but the legacy of the Rebellion of 37-38 is larger than that.

Speaking as a Belgian, the whole separation thing has been coming and going since forever, the Flemish conservatives made it their big party point in the early 2010s and the regions have since received more autonomy and because of that the tensions have all but disappeared.
Elections are due next year and neither the Flemish conservatives nor the nationalists are talking it up, so it's fair to say I feel like the split is not going to happen any time soon.

If California say, called on all Californian servicemen to separate/return to California for muster. How many Soldiers & Assets would USA lose? I'd say a lot. Lots of Californian Pilots, Naval officers etc & US Bases in California. How many Nukes under Californian Officer control? i'd say at least some.

Drew, I'm glad you've discovered General Knowledge! I've been liking his videos for a long time too.
And, as a lifelong Californian (that would be 74 years and counting), I don't see anything absurd about the idea of an independent California. We have--along with the whole Pacific Coast of the U.S.--deep-rooted historical and cultural differences from the part of the U.S. that's east of the Rockies. To put it in the fewest words possible--so as not to write a book here--we're part of the geographical and cultural zone known as the Pacific Rim--we always were and always will be--while East-of-the-Rockies is not. And as far as economics is concerned, California is already the world's fifth-largest economy, and we do far more subsidizing of the federal government than the federal government does of us. That said, I don't think an independent California, all by itself, is especially likely. It just isn't absurd. It's far more likely that if the U.S. somehow dissolves over its political differences, it's the whole west coast that will be exiting together, along with the interior southwest as far east as New Mexico and Colorado.

It's a bit odd that Bougainville wasn't included in either video, as predicted by Drew.
As far as I am aware, it's the only autonomous region in the world that has 1) held a referendum, 2) the independence vote won, and most importantly 3) the vote has been recognised by the national government whose parliament went on to commit to providing independence (by 2027 in this case).
A number of regions have done the first two steps towards democratic independence. The third step, getting the national government to recognise the vote and agree to upholding it, tends to be the difficult part.
(Note: Although Bougainville is moving towards independence in a democratic manner, I think the referendum is being accepted by PNG in large part due to the civil war that led to the vote. I could be wrong though, as I'm by no means an expert in PNG history)

Independence is stupid, let's be honest. You can love your culture and region and still do so under another name and country, all these independence movements will end up fizzling out because it'll completely destroy their economy if they ever became independent.

@@_ykb_ Take Scotland for example, their culture is still very much alive. In the modern world, assimilation doesn't happen anytime someone you doesn't like is part of the same country as you. Assimilation in the modern world happens mostly when you move to another country, and need to assimilate to fit in, but even then, many keep their own cultural traditions.
Go ahead and tell me exactly how every independence movement in this video is being assimilated, because they're not.

As a Scottish person I can 100% vouch that there is still a massive push for independence. The long and the short of it is we are sick of being pushed around by Westminster (the English government) Yes we have our own government, but their powers are still limited. I feel if a vote were to happen again it would still be close, however I think the people of Scotland would vote to become independent. The English government aren't allowing us to have another referendum which is part of the problem.

They all speak something which was maybe at one point French, but butcher the French language in a way which he finds unreasonable.
