This is still one of my favorite ps2 games but seeing it critiqued like this from an outside view yeah it's fair to say it had a good amount of problems. The dialogue pacing is a lot more noticeable now that you put it out there like that. I still love the game for what it was. Good review - Thanks for covering it
What's super funny is that my pediatric dentist used to have an arcade section for children featuring a cabinet with a PS2 in it and some other caveman 2 player side scrolling game. What I remember the most was the PS2 cabinet and the demo it had for this game which was super awesome! Really brought back the nostalgia!
Fun fact; Extermination EU localisation was very different from North America. 1. Dialogue was different. 2. Character design was different. 3. Many voice actors were changed. 4. Subtitles were missing entirely. 5. Difficulty was increased, especially for NG+ And lastly, the ending credits theme was changed and is a lot more fitting. If you search TH-cam for Extermination PAL/EU walk-through or OST, you can listen to the VASTLY superior ending credits theme.
Another thing, at the end of the PS2 version Cindy asks what happened to Sonia. I can't help thinking that it implied an ongoing cycle of guilt and resentment.
Fun fact: The character on the back of Gary's head can mean "wicked" or "bad omen". I imagine it's the equivalent of getting "badass" tattooed on your bicep.
The most interesting thing about that song in the credits - they didn't just hire some random guy from the street to make it - it was actually made by an R&B and funk artist named W. Thad Bourland, who was somewhat well known in the 1970s with his group, "The 9th Creation" (you can find a lot of their songs on TH-cam): I have no idea why the developers contacted this particular artist to record an original song for the game's credits (this is the only game credit W. Thad Bourland has), but there you have it.
The song gradually quiets down and music that's more typical to the game starts playing - I'm guessing that there's a longer version of the song in the game files?
You can make fun of the ending credits song choice but they were ahead of the times. Now it's the chic thing for horror movies to hard cut to an upbeat 50s song when the credits start rolling.
I beat this game every year as a tradition. In my version, they all have black uniforms and the voice acting sounds like they pulled anyone they could get.
You had the European version the version in this video is the U.S. version they both are vastly different from dialogue to difficulty to even having no subtitles
If i remember correctly. Towards the end of the game, theres a note left by someone who worked in the facility saying they met Travis Miller and that they both planned on leaving on a boat.
I only played this game once but really enjoyed it. Love the journey and the campy voice acting. Reminds me 90s action films like Universal Soldier and Solider (Kurt Russel). Slept on and not known all that well but great in their own way.
It is odd, but unless you know gun people, it’s not that weird. Knowing it is Three-oh-eight but also thirty-ought-six and just five five six only comes from hearing it a lot.
Honestly, I was surprised at the start where the main character correct the guy on his terminology. For a game where your character looks nothing like a us marine, thats a cool detail to include.
I loved this game. I remember trying over a friends house and not remembering the name then finding it a year or so later on Gamefly. Such good memories its wild to think Netflix and Gamefly used to mail us movies and games.
I’m sure someone already posted this, but that “x” on the back of Gary’s head is a kanji character: 凶. It has several meanings, but by itself it can mean either evil or bad luck. However, when used with 器, it can mean lethal weapon, which I think is what Gary was going for. 😆
Why is the aspect ratio, so f*ed up? Normally with old games, the game runs at 4:3, but videos get stretched to 16:9 making everything bloated. Yet here it's the reverse the game seems to run at 16:9, but the video is in 4:3 so everything is squashed.
Tokuro Fujiwara as you said, was Director and Producer of respectively Sweet Home and Resident Evil. There's no way in HELL Extermination isn't a Spiritual Sequel of sorts.
Here’s a theory: the Black dude would’ve instantly died from the freezing temperatures if he went overboard. I thought that the organism that was in the process of replicating Denis was foreshadowing that the Black dude was a replication too.
I always like to show people, or tell them, yeah this game deserves a remaster, its cheesy as hell for back then, but now it could be a good game with its themes
Be me. 20 years old in the Marine Corps. Spend all my little Lance Corporal money to buy a PS2. Buy this mess from EB games. I'm now broke with a bad game. Feels bad man.
Not every forgotten game is overrated. Some games are just fun and that's it. I'm currently playing Remember Me and while it's fine and I'm enjoying it - there's nothing more to it. It's like a snack
Huge bias since I've speedran Extermination but the amount of platforming and movement options you get from a survival horror game this old is great. Too bad all of it is extremely jank.
17:56 it’s not an “X” it’s 「凶」 means “misfortune” or “ill luck” Edit:the Japanese version of this actually has amazing voice acting with a real voice actor.
This game is decent but it has easily the worst final boss of any game I've ever played. Three phases that are all horrible and get progressively worse
There's a weird similar jankiness to early PS2 third person action games. This, Project Eden, The Thing and Run Like Hell all have kind of the same gamefeel with awkward exploration and awkward puzzles interrupted by awkward combat. You can see how the formula became games like Mass Effect but they were clearly still working a lot of stuff out.
I'm not sure if this is simply jank or just a product of its time. Even 7th gen games from ongoing series' don't control and behave like their modern counterparts. Of course it's not true for everything, but even the REmake, while also having tank controls and fixed camera, is way more smooth with the movement than the 5th gen RE games. Hell sometimes even games of the same generation and few years apart can have that. I played Dead Space trilogy back to back a while ago and the first game is so sluggish in comparison to 2 and 3, yet I never had any issue with it while playing it in 2008
Has been awhile but i always enjoyed playing this, despite it being abit rough. And the "americanization" of the NA version with making everyone more gruff and rewriting dialogue to sound more blockbuster movie-ish is too funny. I preferred the PAL VA, theyre not as "good" but abit more genuine/natural in a way.

Rip Roger. Greatest warrior of them all. Wanted to become a stormtrooper
I’ve rarely seen marksmanship like his.
Honestly? Even a Stormtrooper would be embarrassed for him.
A flash from the past!! no one has talked about this gem in 15 years
He was hinting to it during his dream, I luckily guessed right and tried to beat it before the video. Sadly wasn’t quick enough
Miss when Sony has these weird horror games: this, Lifeline, Siren. What a time!
Siren is fun to talk about but honestly it is a pain to go through even with a walkthrough
its more of a thinking type game and less action packed honestly i just like the groundhog day aspect it has @@johannharding8161

I used to play Obscure 2 and think the characters were cool. It’s almost embarrassing.
I remember playing this back in like 06 with my Dad when I was a child. Man, this was a blast from the past.

@@gwengurske3743 I heard EU has more accurate localization to the JP compare to NA version.

Inverted cameras were the standard specifically for third person cameras back in the day.
I remember playing this on a demo at my buddy's house and i thought this game was really gory back in 2001.
This is such a classic to me just as much as RE, my dad used to play it a ton when I was little. It’s nice to see someone bring it up in depth!
0:09 Honestly that's a very tame response, still something a Marine would say at being called "Army."
I still have this game! Thank you for the video!
You can make fun of the ending credits song choice but they were ahead of the times. Now it's the chic thing for horror movies to hard cut to an upbeat 50s song when the credits start rolling.

22:08 This is feels like the ending to a 60's monster movie...
Is that the vibe they were actually going for?
I remember playing this as a kid it has good potential if they remade it
17:50 Could the hair be this kanji for unlucky?
凶
Same symbol Cloud draws in his Cross Slash limit break in FF7
Gary's head mark 凶, (evil, bad luck) is probably kind of like having a tattoo of the number 13. Him surviving on sheer luck is probably his joke.
Some ppl say he was infected withouth realizing or a copy made by the bacteria just like happened with that final denis boss
If i remember correctly. Towards the end of the game, theres a note left by someone who worked in the facility saying they met Travis Miller and that they both planned on leaving on a boat.
I wasn’t able to finish the game in time since your stream but I’m so glad I got a heads up beforehand to try!
The knife animation reminds me of the Dino Crisis 2's melee animations
Funny to aee that how this is the very early survival horror title game that came alongside the PS2.
Man I loved this game so much. It really needs a remake
3:21 reminds me of the line from Die Hard 2.

Oh sweet! I actually got back into this game recently! Hopefully I'll actually know what I'm doing this time.

hearing bolder pronounce 5.56 as "five-fiftysix" hurt me more than it should
He mispronounces simple wording all the time, at least once or twice every video and I pull a muscle cringing every time

I’m so happy that people haven’t forgotten Extermination. Definitely ahead of its time and technology but a fantastic playthrough
The next remake I need!
Would be sick 🤯
One of the first games i played on PS2 so it has a special place on my memories. A great indicator for what was about to come next. Cool game.
i played this game and beat it once. this game was a pleasure to play. it was excellent in gameplay graphics and story.
the goofy 凶 at the back of the guy's head means "ominous" or "murder" depending on the context btw
"No marine barber touched that head of hair" - Solid Snake
Alright, the accent in the PAL release is hilarious. It’s like a bad parody of a New York italian
Honestly, I was surprised at the start where the main character correct the guy on his terminology. For a game where your character looks nothing like a us marine, thats a cool detail to include.
I remember this game. It was bad but I still liked and finished it.

One of the best horror games ever. i have it still now in ps2 emulator on pc . Idk why no remake ,no remaster .
Awesome Saturday morning surprise!
I had never seen this game before
What happened to aspect ratio? Image seems seriously squashed
I still love this game
Feels like the PAL voice actors were taking the job more serious.

Tokuro Fujiwara as you said, was Director and Producer of respectively Sweet Home and Resident Evil. There's no way in HELL Extermination isn't a Spiritual Sequel of sorts.
It’s actually a spiritual successor to Deep Fear, a survivor horror game that released for the Sega Saturn in 1998.

Well Dreamcast is considered 6th gen, so that checks out. Though I consider it 5,5 due to the time of release and its library
