@@ediccartman7252 It has, it is a lot due to early work of all Chopin Etudes, all Well tempered Klavier, both being practiced only in Russian schools. This is what makes a pianist, + his talent of course.

Now, after listening to the complete performance, then going back to listen to Richard Goode's version (since he has long been my favorite for Beethoven Sonatas, and, imho, seemingly unfortunately and relatively overlooked as such.) as someone mentioned, memorable as Sokolov's performance is, I think Goode surpasses it with a sense of refinement and polish and letting Beethoven speak for himself. Either way thanks for posting this historical performance. PS, I'd like to think Beethoven himself was more like Goode. But who will ever know.
Beethoven was actually a quite sloppy player who missed notes often. I was extremely disappointed to read this, but it's true. Not just due to his deafness, but even at the height of his virtuosity, he placed far more emphasis on passion than accuracy. Sokolov, on the other hand, is a perfectionist of the highest order, as we can all see here. Furthermore, Sokolov has access to far more precise instruments than Beethoven did.

But there is no mutual exclusion: "a perfectionist" (like Sokolov) can be passionate ; and "a passionate" (like Beethoven) can have his very personal perfectionism... P.S. A very exciting performance, but just a tad too crisp for my taste. Too sharp at every corner. No doubt Sokolov would have made an outstanding drummer.
Epic as ever. He brings all the drama of a symphony to this sonata. Stunning.
