I remember when that Floodgate album came out. After Exhorder (an awesome NOLA thrash band that influenced Pantera) had broken up, I think Kyle felt somewhat jaded and was trying to capitalize a bit on the success and sound of Corrosion of Conformity. It just didn't work out as everyone was probably expecting a closer sound to Exhorder . As an Exhorder and 90s metal fan, I've tried to give Floodgate 'Penalty' a few listens...it's not bad for the time really, but they just fell short of the other 'up and coming' bands making an impact at the time (Korn, Deftones, Life Of Agony, Marilyn Manson, Machine Head, Fear Factory, etc). There were so many great bands that should've been huge back then but sadly just got overlooked in time like Prong (NY), Helmet (NY), TAD (WA), Mundane (CAN), Pist On (NY), Dearly Beheaded (UK), Skrew (TX), Gruntruck (WA), Wickerman (IL), L7 (CA), Failure (CA), Hum (IL), Smile (CA), Only Living Witness (MA), Dig (CA), Fudge Tunnel (UK), 454 Big Block (MA), etc.
It took me a while to fully understand TYPE O NEGATIVE, even though I'd been familiar with them since the days of 'Bloody Kisses'. Now I regard that album and 'Slow, Deep And Hard' as two of the very best Metal albums of the 90s, the decade which spawned *THOUSANDS* of masterpiece albums.
