    Canyon does a pretty good job with their packaging and what they provide to build it up. If you don’t have a stand the box acts as the stand to build the bike. Their little torque wrench now lives as part of my emergency bike kit in my truck. And, I agree on the tubes in the tires. Love that a 2.8 or even 3” tire fits!

    Finally we get to see the Stoic! Great job Steve on the review! Just ordered my Stoic 4 (2023 version) a month ago when it was on sale for 1590$. That price is ridiculously cheap when you think for the most bikes you pay few hundreds more and get worse parts. I think only Vitus is offering better spec for the money but the geo is not that modern. So this had me having doubts about the bike being that cheap. Haven’t gor time to properly test it but i can’t wait for your review.

      I see and hear guys from a distance awfully shifting with their much more expensive components.😅

  • @hunters215

    agreed about the seat tube length being a bit tall. on mine, the bike felt too tall even with the dropper all the way down. it was hard to get out of the way of that seat on descents - that was my only real complaint with the bike. also - wish i'd known that you were supposed to trim those bars! they did indeed feel ridiculously long, and i was like "this can't be right." FWIW I was very happy with Canyon's support and they are a good company to work with in general.
    will consider your patreon for my next purchase. good content as always.

    • @hardtailparty

    I have that bike for 2 years now and it can handle more than I initially thought. I live in the Canary Islands - steep climbs and steep, rocky descends. Because of the steep climbs I searched for a capable Hardtail and I have to say that it blows me away. You almost can throw anything you want at it. It fits me perfectly- that said, I have the opposite body composition than Steve - short torso and long legs. I am super stoked for your riding opinion.
    2 things I do not like: it is quiet heavy and the inner cable routing rattles…
    Keep up the good work!

  • @josephfarrugia2350
    @josephfarrugia2350 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    14:50 Do note that if you size down to a small, the bike will come with, & probably only fit, 27.5 wheels/Tires and not 29ers. Which will make it handle differently, no matter the similar geometry (& no matter what Canyon says).
    Other manufacturers make perfectly usable 29er bikes for smaller riders with very, very similar geometry; I believe this design choice is actually a flaw in the sizing lineup of most Canyon models not just the Stoic.

      I'm just starting out on the Roscoe 8. Been riding since April of this year and started on the Marlin 6. Haha kind of a mistake, should've went with the Roscoe at first. I feel like the fork is fine for only riding a few months. The hub sounds so good!

    • @michaelrieser9928
      @michaelrieser9928 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The roscoe 8 is banging deal! It’s lighter with lower level fork. The marzochi 2 fork can be had for $450.
      I think you could sell the roscoe frame faster then the canyon if you were doing a new build. Let’s see how he rates it.

And I've also been looking at the Roscoe 7/8 as the next step up.

    I think tubes in the tires makes sense for a company that sells direct to the general public. Not everyone has a pump for tubeless tires, or the knowhow. In fact, I suspect most customers don't. This way, you can at least get the bike built and rolling. You can take it to the LBS for tubeless options.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. At this price point and fir its intended rider, a lack of tubeless is a poor decision by Canyon.

  • @hardtailparty
    @hardtailparty  ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Did you know... Hardtail Party's reviews are completely independent? I don't get paid from companies to review their bikes. I rely on people sharing my content with others, donations through buymeacoffee and Patreon to support this channel. Unlinked the big websites, I don't get $10k+ from canyon or others as a sponsor. So you can count on unbiased reviews of your favorite hardtails on this channel. If you learned something and benefitted from this video, consider supporting this channel in some way.
    A large number of viewers of this video aren't yet subscribed. If you love hardtails, consider subscribing. We focus on hardtails here and I love showcasing different brands and geometries.
    I really wish this bike had come tubeless, understand a lot of stoic owners received tubeless valves and taped rims. I can only speak for what I received. Yes, it would have been nice to set this up tubeless, but these videos already take 30-40 hours to make. On top of that, any time I have to set a bike up tubeless, that comes out of my pocket. So valves, tape, and sealant all have to be provided by me. With the number of bikes I get in at a time, I choose not to spend my money or time setting up bikes that I feel should already come tubeless ready. I was pretty disappointed this one didn't come with taped rims.

    Interesting walk-through. I had the Stoic on my shortlist together with the Nukeproof Scout and the NS Eccentric. Ended up buying the NS Eccentric 29 Alu frame a few weeks ago, as Canyon was not ready to sell a frame only and because the Eccentric was just too good a bargain to ignore for a brand-new frame.
    @hardtailparty have you ever considered reviewing the NS Eccentric, maybe both the Alu and CroMo versions back to back?

    Can't wait for the ride review. Hate that they put tubes and no tape in a tubeless ready setup. I already had extra tape and valves so made the swap on my kids Stoic 2 immediately and added a dropper. A week after I got the Stoic 2, the Stoic 4 went on sale for $1500 for a couple days. I was pissed because I would have paid $500 more for the Stoic 4. Been a great bike for my kid, been hitting trails with me, and it's been great for him so far.
    I use the tools that came with his bike for almost everything. I have two sets from my Canyon Grail and keep the other one in my truck just in case I need to adjust something before I ride.
    If it's the same saddle that's on the Stoic 2, it's complete garbage. Took that off after his first ride. Thankfully, I have tons of spare parts, but most people don't.
    3.0 DHR didn't fit, I tried my wheel to test it out. 2.8 Rekon does fit.

    I had a Stoic 3 in 2021. Saddle and grips are all the same on the Stoics, and they are scrap. I you want to buy a Stoic, spare some extra money, because you need to buy a new saddle and grips immediately. And pull out these super heavy Kenda tubes that Canyon puts in. Switching to Schwalbe Aerothan tubes almost saved me 500g (!) of weight. Going tubeless wasn't an option because I read a review in an online magazine once, saying that those Alexrims are not safe enough for a tubeless setup.
    Alexrims wheels were very solid, but heavy. The overall bike was very heavy - way more heavy than Canyon indicated on their website, so I felt a little betrayed. Dropper post broke while on my the third longer tour. It took 2 weeks since Canyon gave an initial feedback for the warranty stuff, but then they replaced the whole thing without hesitation (expect long shipping times if you are not in Germany).
    Overall a heavy, but solid bike. I rode it at the bike parks, too, and I always had the feeling that my riding skills were not enough to fully pushing the bike to its limit. I sold the bike last year and have a fully now, but I wish I wish I had kept it as a tour or winter bike.

    Cool bike...
    I had one when canyon introcuded them. Nice looking, super stiff, a little low quality finish and inconstant geo... almost like enduro hardtail with 140 - 150mm fork but very low stack that creates issues when going DH.... and veryyyyy long reach and top tube. Canon M is others bikes L.
    After year on Canyon Stoic I swapped frame for Commencal Meta HT... same stiff, better quality finish and proper high stack + Commencal you can ride 27.5 , mullet or full 29.
    But this Stoic was cool trail hardtail for long rides... but then issue was how stiff was frame... for endure is cool to have overbuild but for long trail riding it was exhausting sometimes + saddle was extreme uncomfortable. LOL

    Stuff that I don’t think is mentioned is that the “bike guard” bike box (the very same box that every bike ever sold comes in) is an additional £18 on top
    of the shipping costs.
    The saddle sucks and the cable routing through the frame is pretty awful. Sharp edges to rip into cables.

    I didn't had a lot of problems with it because I disassembled everything, the thing was bone dry.
    That assembled in cambodja sticker was a huge red flag, every single torque spec was far out.

    I actually have wondered if the tubes are installed to keep the tubeless tape compressed and help it adhere to the rim better? Assuming the rim is taped properly (clearly not in this case). After having some recent tubeless issues with stubborn carbon rims, the tube-on-tape overnight definitely helps the tape out before you put sealant in. An extra step but saves me hours of cursing leaky rims and my rim tape jobs.

For other brands and other online shops, XL is displayed for a height of 1.88 cm and a leg length of 87.5 cm. Now im not sure if XL is to large for me and L to small. Can someone please help me?

      Hello. I have just bought the stoic 4 about 2 weeks ago. I am 190cm tall and have 91cm inseam. I went with the canyon recomandation and I bought the L size. It does not feel small in terms of reach 480mm and also an effective tube length 661mm. The top tube length is 460 and my dropper is set now at around 500mm in height. Adding the crank and the length of the dropper, it fits perfect for my legs. I don't think I need it higher. The XL stoic is 505 reach, 690 effective tube length and 500 top tube. In this case I will need to set the dropper all the way inside the frame to fit my legs. For your inseam might be too tall. I will go with the L in your case.

    I ride a lot of other bikes, and agree that the price for what you get is amazeballs! I have had it on a few rides so far and it is bullet proof. I would recommend this bike for those that want a well built bike. Drivetrain, fork, 4-pot brakes….dropper…..heck yeah!
    Prefer the Deore drivetrain over SX and NX; have had both and swapped them out.

    so on the stem .. one thing wrong.. that loctite-dri pre-assembly on the fasteners should be in a oxygen environment till you use them. not in the stem in the box. it cured already cause they are anaerobic. most mechanics incorrectly put grease on the threads and non on the bolt head and washer. I did not see you use grease. but I would just remove that loctite with a wire brush re-apply 242 or none and grease the whole thing. it is mostly for consumers that would use nothing. it is removable not reusable.

      Cable length doesn't affect how a bike rides, but running different width bars will affect the ride quite a bit. I strive to keep my bar worth the same on all bikes. Not to mention, trimming the brake housing will add an extra 30 minites to the build time. Where I'm not being paid for my time building these, it's not worth the time just for aesthetics on a bike I'll rode a handful of times and send back a week later.

      The limited color options is, so far, the only thing I disliked about the canyon bikes I ordered. That green color doesn’t seem to be available in the 2023 Stoic 4, only the silver. I also didn’t like the red of the Stoic 3. But boy, I loved the colors on the Stoic 2. I would have ordered the white frame had it been available, but there was only one bike in stock. Still, the black Stoic 2 is pretty cool and it’s also great value.
