You're awesome for posting this. I failed the state inspection since the e-brake was filled up with all that mush and grease. My fix didn't go as far as to remove the entire assembly, but some q-tip maneuvering and 2 shots of PB blaster at the joint magically loosened everything up. By the time I was done it looked like I had deep cleaned bigfoot's ear.... THANKS!! 👍

THANK YOU for posting this Classys!!!! 16+ years of creamy, sugary coffee being spilt onto (and into) the console of my '06 had mine buggered up as well. Thanks to your guidance, it is now operating as designed, just like yours.

Thank you Classys! My 2003 GX470 had this exact same problem. I took it to the shop for a brake inspection thinking it needed tightening or adjusting. They wanted just short of $500 to replace the brake ('It's Lexus parts, you know, so we have to charge that..."). I watched your video straight through once, and I decided that your clear and detailed explanation of the process could get me through it and save me $500. I had all the other stuff except trim tools, so $12.99 (minus the loose change I found) plus 2 hours later I have a functioning parking brake after doing exactly what you did. Thank you for taking the time to show and explain this fix and help us ladies not get ripped off at the shop. Subscribed!

It’s like the M16 of shift levers. 🙂 it needs to stay clean to function. 👍🏻

Thanks for this 🙌🏼 just got a gx470 06 as well and I notice it did the exact same thing. Wasn’t engaging or clicking. Going to dig into it soon

It's satisfying to clean and rebuild the whole thing, but honestly I think it's just binding and prying it open a little is what did the trick. Also, you can grasp the button and pull it out to make up for the weakened spring as a temporary fix until you get a chance to pry it open and/or clean it.

Before I start putting brute force on it,,,is it possible to remove the e brake grip by just working it off or is there something holding it on? Just curious if maybe thats all thats wrong with mine. I unzipped it and looked and its really clean down it there.

The grip alone should slide off with some force, as long as the boot is off of it. It will be a little difficult to remove/put back on.
