  • If you were to build a knife collection from a single brand, what would you need? Start your Spyderco Knives collection here: kcoti.com/3PYhPyA
Spyderco may have made their name making sharpeners, but they’ve built a legacy on knives. So how do we narrow a Spyderco collection down to just 5 knives? For David’s needs, we’ll look at a large and small fixed blade for camping and outdoor activities, a gentleman’s knife for dressing up, and a pair of EDC folders for big and small tasks.

I wanted to get the Boker Barlow too but was afraid it'll get confiscated like one of my Kizer double detent. Why was it stuck in customs for so long? Double detent knives are in a grey area, they sometimes mistake it for assisted flick knife and nothing you say can change their mind so I'm not gonna risk it again. If only overseas orders from KnifeCenter don't need a minimum $200 to order I might risk it.

    • @kermitthepog7063
      @kermitthepog7063 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@icygecko it had border force tape on it so they obviously opened it, inspected it, and let it through. Double detents are definitely legal in the UK, as are flippers. They get erroneously seized sometimes but they're not illegal. Neither are button locks, but that's harder to argue in court as they can be accused of being gravity knives, which they're not. They require some manual human force to open, not just a button push which activates a spring or other automatic mechanism. Double detent knives are widely sold in the UK, as are button locks!

The street beat is an underrated work knife. I read about the designers philosophy on it and it works. He put that big choil on there to make it so you can hold it with one finger and still have the use of the rest of your hand. Ive found that to be surprisingly handy when your working and in the outdoors.

The chappy is a really hard knife to beat! Mega slicey, small and thin, tough enough to handle most any edc tasks... it's a small knife with bigger knife usability. Just like the Lil native is such a compact little knife but is super capable and can handle tasks that you would want a full size knife for but the Lil native will handle it without issue.

I could literally keep it all spyderco and all st nicks exclusives in cpm 4v. Only thing I may would do it take out the 4v pm2 and replace it with a Caribbean for the lc200n when I'm out on the boat in the keys fishing.

I have the Enuff 2 in K390, and it rides daily just above my wallet in a scout style carry using a knockoff Tek-Lok. It’s easily one of my favorite knives of all brands. If DCA convinces LT Wright to do a run of Skipjacks in AEB-L, I may consider switching to that for a while, but the Enuff 2 is an incredible knife. I haven’t had a problem with the handles being difficult.

Stretch 2 in K390 would be my pick in the full size "worker" category. Excellent design, in the steel I consider second only to MagnaCut for EDC. Its 3" counterpart would be the Native 5 Salt in MagnaCut.
But I like high performance steels leaning towards toughness/chip resistance over wear resistance, thin geometry, and 50/50 choils. The Kapara is another option, but doesn't neatly fit into these categories, as its a full-size gentleman's folder. If Spyderco ever did a Kapara sprint run / exclusive in MagnaCut, it might be the best knife for me in the world.

Thanks DCA. Great vid. As a longtime Spyderco fanboy I was really interested in your decision making. For me, Spyderco offers the best range of steels and the most consistent high quality heat treat regime. Spyderco really takes the time to get the best out of the steels they use. I've looked at Spyderco many times but never bought one yet, food for thought.
I was considering other brands, I use Brisa knives and enjoy them a lot, after a lot of searching I finally found they have folders too so that would be fun, nessmuck would be a must for big chopper.
I have several real steel blades so I made that my list; big fixed would be Bushcraft+:with convex, light small fixed blade is alieneck, gentleman knife would be real slim, uk friendly folder would be Luna or Solis,
    That would do me.

  • @gordonmacdowell8117

Spyderco make great slicey folders, but for fixed blades they're mostly focused on the tactical side, although that Moran looks great. The Bow River is probably the best example they have of an outdoorsy knife, but as far as I know it's only available in 8Cr13MoV. Other than the Chaparral with nicer handles, Spyderco don't have a lot of what anyone would consider a dress knife and a lot of people criticize them for being ugly, but they're great cutting tools. I've got all three of those larger folders you started with (Para 2, Manix 2, and Caribbean, but the one I use the most is my Police 4. I carried a Spyderco Walker for years (designed by Michael Walker), but that Lil' Temperance 3 looks interesting. For the most part what I like most about Spyderco is they remember that knives are for cutting things and tend towards the thinner, slicier blades.
Benchmade would be a good choice for the next one brand challenge. They have a lot better non-tactical, outdoor, fixed blade catalog, but I can't think of a single big chopper, just bushcraft and skinner knives. They would pose some difficult decisions with choosing a folder though, with so many good ones.

@@WaypointOverland I should have got it when I could. I ended up with a bark River Puuko knife and a TOPS bushcrafter.

Spyderco and ZT are my 2 favorite knife companies. Do ZT next.
I would chose other brands for fixed blades but my top 5 Spyderco folders are. Sage 5 CF compression lock, Yojimbo2, Manix2 FRN, Byrd Cara Cara 2 FRN, Para 2 with custom CF scales.

The Bushcraft UK, the Puko, the Smock, the Carribean Sheepsfoot & the Endela. These would be my current 5. I'm not worried about a gentleman's carry, but the Smock could be one!

For me the Zoomer over the Bowie. The Bowie is larger than I need but a strong fixed blade is needed. 2nd knife will be the Bow River for some food prep and fish filleting. Gotta have a Para 2, no explanation necessary. Dragonfly 2 Wharncliffe as my lightweight edc, solid utility blade type abilities. And number 5 I gotta agree with that Chaparral as gentlemens carry, gives me a knife with the Spyderco iconic leaf shape and is a very pretty knife.

Might have gone for the Sun and Moon chapparal as a gents knife and as a knife for life I would pick the Carribean for rust resistance

Manbug Wharncliffe, Dragonfly Salt, PM3 Lightweight, Native 5 Salt, Lil Native Lightweight.
My 5. Small to medium sided knives that perform big.
I do like that Caribbean though.

My collection of Spyderco is quite a bit different from yours. Of course mine is a bit eclectic and older than yours as well. Have a couple that aren't in production anymore.

Great selection DCA but the group here Down Under yelled out NO.....!! when you took the Para 3 off the table. It's true though when it comes to limitation, the ergonomics would have to be up there & less the high end material. Size matters. Big is good.! Next "one brand" challenge Buck Knives. Cheers from Australia.

As cool as that Aikuchi is, for a gentleman’s knife, I’m hitting eBay and looking for a carbon fiber Smock. I have the old BHQ exclusive with jade G-10 and M4 steel. Excellent knife.

So, I wanna buy my first spyderco and I'm interested on the endela wharncliffe k390, but why there's no easy access for scales online?

    • @Zx2Solomon
      @Zx2Solomon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Probably because the Endela isn't nearly as popular as their competing cousins, the Endura and Delica. Should still be able to find some..but maybe just one or two choices, like G10 cheap scales. I wouldn't let that discourage me from getting it though!

i hope to see more spyderco designs where the blade to handle ratio is a little more even. I like their geometry, materials, and fit and finish; i don't often like carrying a knife that's >8" oal but has 3" of sharpened blade.

You did pick the small Street Beat to present. Why not the Street Bowie?
To me the Caribbean is one of the most underaporeciated models in the Spyderco lineup. Not the best though but brillant for what it is.

Dear Thomas the Naysayer (I mean that as a compliment) and DCA the blade,
Please may I enlist your help?
I am after a single blade to carry, obviously at home only as I'm UK based. My preferences are:
    Scandi grind
Blade of 3.5 to 4 inch long, ideally closer to 4
Lock favourites are cross bar button or lock back.
Handles I'm not that fussed. Now I know it may feel like I am describing the Finn Wolf, ideally a little bigger than that. I have the wolf and it's just not quite enough for all my round the house needs.
Suggestions would be welcome, especially with added snark 😀.
    Thanks
    S

Hey guys im left handed and its sometimes tough being a lefty in the knife game. Some of my most desired knives are exclusively right handed. can you guys do a show on the best left handed knives available today.
If you could include some automatics and frame-locks id appreciate it.
    Thanks!

With the pocket clip mounted lefty, I have absolutely issues fidgeting or drop shutting my pm2 and caribbean. 3 fingers on the clip securing grip, while thumb and pointer pinch the compression lock.

Simple choices: Smock, Manix 2, Native Chief, Shaman, and upcoming Bodacious. Steel is inconsequential as Spyderco does a great job on the steel, and variety of steel choices. The jury is still out on the Bodacious as it may just be a version of the Shaman without a finger choil. Between these two I would opt for the Bodacious for the additional blade length.

I like the compression lock but I’m left handed. I wish it worked better for my hands but it’s annoying to use the compression lock one handed with my left hand… probably why I like the Manix 2 so much

Oh no, you forgot the Spyderco Siren Sprint Run in Carbon Fiber with CPM S90V (Lance Clinton design). It is a great EDC knife, light and slim, strong and great steel, best quality. If you don't know it, definitely give it a try. I have had a few Spyderco knives in my hands, but this one is really a great all-rounder next to the Chaparral, which is much smaller.
