What a fabulous collection from a bygone era. Loved the A/C electric locos, and wow! The cars on that cartic4 would be worth more now than the day you filmed them. Thank you so much for the time you spend posting these videos. TH-cam at its best.
Thank you so much again Roy. I was 14 at the time and lived near Roade cutting which was at the southern point of the Northampton loop. I was often riding around on 310s and visited Rugby many times. I miss those days so much and all the variety of traction so seeing this again brings back some wonderful memories. I wish I had a tardis!
I grew up on a farm next to the Northampton loop line and loved watching the different freight trains go through. I remember being woken a few times in the dead of night by a 37 thumping it's way through the cutting towards long Buckby station. The vibrations went through the house, happy days!
Those memories will stay with you for ever Richard, I remember the sound of the Deltic's on diverted ECML trains droning away for miles on a quiet still night.
My childhood station - always remember being just a little freaked out walking between platforms 1 and 2 at the top end (by Platform 8) past the buzzing electric substation. Would have been 7/8 when this video was taken
Great video, there is so much in this. I have lived in Rugby since 1988. The station did have a weird run down atmosphere until modernised and this captures it all, from 'Cartic 4s' and all those Ford Escorts, Speedlink, Class 25s and all that electric traction. I did think that the Class 86 entering Rugby from the South looked a bit frightening as it rides the track work... have to say it is all much smoother these days!
Fantastic footage of my local station,,Be catching a train from there in the morning...My how its changed..I was away in the RAF at this time....But incredible memories of the Locomotives and rolling stock...Loved the film..Thanks..Ade
Great video roy! The film quality is superb!spent many hours working into and out of rugby!as a driver Based at Bletchley. Brings back great memories! Keep them coming! Many thanks!
Lived and worked in Rugby in the 80's. Great town, good people, massive station complex. Strange to be watching this over 30 yrs later living in Canada! Just beyond the tracks on GEC land was where Frank Whittle demonstrated the jet engine to the guy from the ministry - blew him off his feet! At the other end of the station the Victorian Channel Tunnel line crossed this railway. Next to that bridge was the national Steam Locomotive Testing Station opened just after the war. Lots of amazing things in one small area. Less than a mile south is Tom Brown's Rugby school where the plaque declares "William Web Ellis with a fine disregard for the rules picked up the ball and ran, thus inventing Rugby Football".
It's changed so much since this video. Virgin did a great job of modernising. I have always wondered why the station building on the central platform is so big, what goes on in all those rooms?
@@richardjelley3074 Part of the upstairs was where the Controllers worked running the trains in a large area around Rugby. Large empty rooms when I went upstairs with my school children in '85.
fabulous footage! around this time I would buy a rover ticket and often spend a day on Rugby or Nuneaton to cop a few 86 and 87's, SO much power in them! I miss those days! Rugby felt and looked like a derelict Kings cross as I'd never seen anything like it coming from Lincoln! wonderful place, loved every second of my trips there which would often be a 31 haul from Peterborough if I remember correctly
Excellent video as always Roy. Loved the ac electric action. Great shots of 25s and 31s too. Very useful footage for modellers; especially the 08 and mineral wagons and the pw train. Thanks very much for sharing all your fabulous archive footage.
Great video Brings back memories of when we had lots of variety Mk 1, 2 and 3 stock all mixed together interesting freight traffic and the 08 on mineral wagons was good to see.
Hi.Roy, good video I started on the footplate at Stockport edgeley shed as a fireman on the 4th of April 1961 I finished my time at longsight as a driver so I my be on the video at some time Regards Phil.
Well, that was interesting. Lived in Rugby all my life and remembered just how things change( not always for the better). At least the stations is a lot more modern. Good one👍
Superb footage Roy with some good captures on film of test car 10, 25's, the old coach in the departmental train and I think Starlight express in early IC exc livery. I remember seeing this loco at Carlisle in the summer of 84 was the first 86 I ever saw in the new colours. Really loved seeing the footage of the cartics with the ford escorts as I am scratchbuilding the same train for my wemblesden park exhibition layout.
Great video and many a happy hour spent on the Southern end of this Station watching the sparkles go past:-) Also shows what a shock to the system the introduction of Inter City livery was- we thought it looked amazing at the time! Great to see the 86s still on Freightliners through here- but will they be withdrawn as I hear that they are getting ten of the Anglian 90s soon:-((
Hi Roy great video of rugby being back memories of west coast main line in the 1980s I also filmed rugby and crewe and euston and Birmingham new street in the 1980s thank you mate clive
Awesome video brings back so many memories for me having been originally born and raised in Rugby in the 1970's through to the early 90's and in the mid 80's I'd often spend hours watching trains from the the myson house car park just north of the station, I have to admit though I was a little disgusted to so "That Rancid Can" 86213 Lancashire Witch in this Video 😠 I hate that loco with a vengeance as it failed on me more than once when I later used to go out riding on trains around the Midlands, however you redeemed yourself by showing my personal beast 87015 Howerd of Effingham in this Video too, it was great to see it again sadly it did not escape the cutters torch RIP when 86213 is Preserved! There is no justice in the world, nice to see a couple of Roarers too, 85 on parcels and an 81 on passenger with aircon stock that it could not power properly due to the incompatable earthing arrangement on the gen 1 electrics, still it really brought back so many memories of the classic rugby station I knew from my childhood and it's a shame you never filmed on of the BOC trains as that would have made this video for me, thanks again for posting this up and sharing such wonderful memories
Particularly interested in the car transporter. We used to throw ballast at the buggers just up from Rugby at Newbold. Oh happy days of mindless vandalism.
The vast majority of WCML passenger trains then were worked by 86's and 87's. 85's did work some, but they were more commonly seen on freight and parcels. This was actually filmed 4 years before the 90's entered traffic.
I seem to recall that the Class 81's and 85' were doing more of the inter regional trains by then, coming on/of at Coventry or more often Birmingham. If only I still had my notes!
Especially rugby station: until the late-90's it was in need of much attention. I do miss the bay platforms and the wagon variety! I used to watch the goods trains pull into the sidings from the 'Ironbridge' in the early 90's (well after Rugby's golden rail period.
Oh, Roy, what wonderful nostalgia. If only we could go back to those days for the variety of trains. More please!!! Best wishes 👍🏼

Pleased it brought back memories of those happy days Jonahs.
Rugby reminds me of English Electric and I still love BR' s blue livery complete with the famous arrow logo. Wonderful video, thank you.

BR Blue almost everywhere and some interesting wagon variety from the Rugby I remember as a kid - which today looks very different indeed!

Nostalgia of BR days, great for us enthusiasts whom were mere teenagers at the time, thankyou for sharing

Wish speed link was back in these clogged roads days.
A great video, full of interest.
Superb video. nice to see BR corporate blue locos and coaches. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great stuff mate. All for the Fords on the car transporter are collectors items now.
Rugby was a very atmospheric - for which read rather rundown station before it was renovated. Just look at all the junk on the tracks!
Yes it was, I liked the massive overall roof - but it became very run-down. What a jumble of track there was then !
Nice collection of Fords 2:05, including some tasty Escort XR3's
Great video Roy. I wouldn't mind one of those XR3i's now. There prices have gone through the roof.
Hi Roy great video of rugby being back memories of west coast main line in the 1980s I also filmed rugby and crewe and euston and Birmingham new street in the 1980s thank you mate clive
That's an excellent video, more of the same please 👏👏👍👍
Doubly interesting: at 11:10 is an unconverted 86/0; they were rarely used on Inter-City work being restricted, in theory, to 80 mph.

Caught doomed 31409 there in 1989
Wow days when we had twelve coach trains
Still do on London commuter trains, don't they? (Three four-car units.)
Also, what about the one-coach train at 1:45? :D
Nice update, You have managed to get quite abit done!
Particularly interested in the car transporter. We used to throw ballast at the buggers just up from Rugby at Newbold. Oh happy days of mindless vandalism.
David Bradshaw you fanny ! 😡
Myson House car park was a good location 👀😁😁
Interesting times !
Myson House car park. Venue for a lot of football amongst the spotters
All those electrically hauled freights.
Classic Clip. Anyone know the identity of The 86 at 6m++ with the red double arrow? Never seen that before
I'm surprised buy how few 81/85 hauled passenger trains there are, lovely filming again though sir
Me too, why was that?

that's such a longtime ago roy
Its lost its soul since those days. Now its just another dormitory town.
@1:14 what is the class of that emu? Remember these at Bescot in the late 70's, in fact all these locos.
The emu is a class 310

Why is it so dirty and empty
DRACARY S that was a typical British Railways station then 😆

When trains were trains, not like the pathetic nonsense of today
Was that young David I saw at 8:07 ???
Yes that's Him!
