- On 14 September 2024, Dr. Tan Cheng Bock publicly expressed concerns over the estimated S$335 million cost of the Founders’ Memorial. In a Facebook post, he questioned the necessity of such an extravagant expenditure, recalling the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s well-known opposition to monuments in his honor. Dr. Tan highlighted Lee’s belief that his legacy should be a "living nation" with strong institutions, not memorials of stone.
Dr. Tan suggested that the significant funds could be better used to address national issues, particularly healthcare for Singapore’s aging population. As a former practicing doctor, he proposed investing in home care systems to ease the strain on hospitals and improve the well-being of the elderly. He also called for a simpler, more modest memorial that reflects the values of Singapore’s founding leaders, allowing the rest of the funds to be directed toward practical, forward-looking initiatives.
Dr. Tan's remarks came after the cost breakdown for the memorial was revealed during a Parliamentary session on 9 September. Minister Edwin Tong explained that the S$335 million covers construction, exhibition spaces, family areas, and gardens, though final operational costs are still being determined. Additionally, the price did not account for land costs, which could further increase the overall expense.

Money earned should always goes back to the citizen in a form of reduction to cost of living.

I believe probably the late LKY would not want to spend the 335 million Singapore dollar on this Founder's Memorial rather using the money to help those less fortunate Singaporean families.
And which contractors are they going to award the project to? Singaporeans have not asked for an audit of the mega public tenders awarded over the years because they over trusted PAP.

thats the problem when u have 10 opposition against 80 PAP, 1 opposition have to handle 8 PAP, would be slightly better if we get 30 opposition against 60 PAP so 1 opposition need to handle only 2 PAP. We can then ensure any bill that pass in parliament went through a good challenges.

Who or which minister suggested to build LKY MEMORIAL . What about the forefathers founders who build Spore, Dr. Goh and Raja. These two are the strong pillars and without them, Singapore is not what is today. LKY is only a spokesman during that era. If any minister insist they built LKY memorial then Sinpaore must not supress Dr. Goh and Raja for their great contibution to the growth of Singapore. They are many Singaporean contibuted voluntary great work to Simgapore without high pay must not be forgotten. In this case Singapore is full of Memorials. What do you do when memorials are built. Are PAP sincerely paying respect to these memorials? An epitaph is sufficient as a memorial for LKY, afterall the Great Works are done by the two founding members i.e. Dr. Goh and Raja.

Yes addressing the problem with the aged population is paramount issue but up till now the government has not done enough. Together with the TFR issue the government need to seriously and honestly get on with implementing more robust measures to address them instead of taking cosmetic and woefully inadequate steps.
Those who lived through LKY political career n beyond till his passing on will always remember Mr. LKY, memorial or not. SGP is his legacy, his monument, his memorial. He doesn’t need anything else to honor him! 2 generations later, the ppl then won’t remember him other than textbooks stories. Maintenance of the memorial is not one time but cyclical expenditure, guaranteed to increase in costs with time. Most impt LKY never wanted such a memorial n one that costs so much to build n even more to maintain. Why can’t we respect him n do according to his wish. This is upmost respect we can accord him! The oppos should press further on the costs breakdown, what are the crowd capacity assumptions, what are the benefits, what is the process of tender given the high value, etc. The questioning needs to be sharpened. Now you are shown a laundry list of the costs breakdowns, so what? The oppos need to anticipate these type of standard, superficial responses and be ready to probe more incisively. What is the purpose of the questions from opps? They need to be more purposeful. Don’t ask for the sake of asking.

Does Tan Cheng Bock respect Lee Kuan Yew? Nah. All these just to create opposition talk points. You know where this is leading to. There are thousands of things Tan Cheng Bock can pursue which are very small issue. Example in Tan Cheng Bock house, he can buy a Rolex watch for his son birthday. His wife may bellow at him "Dont have to buy so expensive, you know how this money would help the poor?"
