Kapustin was a such incredible composer. Now I'm glad of not being the unique that realized of that similarities that his compositions had with Kirby music.
@@pornmachinegun yep. He's Nikolai Kapustin. He passed away last year and his compositions were something that my music teacher introduced to me. His fast fingers it's something that we're going to miss…
I'd love to know more about Jun Ishikawa's influences. We know some of Hirokazu Ando's influences at least. Here's a quote from his "Still Tickling Gamers Pink" interview: "I like John Williams, who’s best known for his film scores, and I like French composers like Debussy and Ravel for classical music, as well as Beethoven’s symphonies. For jazz and fusion, I listen to people like Herbie Hancock, Gary Burton, and Egberto Gismonti. I also have heartfelt respect for the jazz pianists Makoto Ozone and Satoru Shionoya." It's strange how Kapustin's idiosyncratic jazz-classical style has such a strident overlap with some Japanese video game soundtracks, despite none of them so far (to my knowledge) claiming to be inspired by his music. I could make similar comparisons of Kapustin to some of Soyo Oka or Atsuyoshi Isemura's music, and no doubt other game composers. Also... thanks for the shoutout again. ^^;;
I suspect that it's a case where ishikawa and kapustin were drawing from the same influences, but it's so hard to find any evidence to back that up. it seems really plausible to me though, and with other composers too. like convergent evolution of musical ideas and inspirations
i feel like i'm losing my mind. i'm a big fan of STAFFcirc. i listen to all the albums, all the time. a few weeks ago i learned from the youtube channel "the brickster" that one of the albums is themed around a test midi packed with windows 3.1. and now from you i learn another one has a theme of this kapustin fella's music. is STAFFcirc a black hole of all music? and is youtube some kind musical hawking radiation? well, i never would've known of kapustin without your video, even listening to "switched on kapustin" often. so thanks!
lol, most of the albums have a theme of some sort. the ones that dont are just kind of hidden, like "TERMINAL VICE" being a prompt exchange. the brickster, myself, and staffcirc aren't directly related but we share some overlap. a lot of my music friends appear in the staffcirc albums and i think some contributors to brickster's channel were in my discord? I actually cant remember where that was. but there's definitely some social connections that aren't obvious from just looking at "the products".
@@GSTChannelVEVO yeah, i can hear themes in each album, but mostly can't pick them out except for the first one. anyway, i guess i'm in a really cool bubble.
hello fellow staffcirc fan!! even though this is a video about vgm, i think i almost had a heart attack when i saw that album cover. and then blitz lunar was mentioned and i almost died.
Wow… I’m so glad I stumbled across this video! I don’t see videos focused on Kirby music as often as I’d like to. My favorite Kirby soundtrack is probably from Super Star Ultra. I also like Squeak Squad.
I have a handful of these in mind, but I tend to jump around various projects a lot so these things get delayed. Even this one was obviously supposed to come out a month ago :S I think my next non-mix video is going to be massive and time consuming though. we'll see!
That's incredible! I always thought that kirby music had a bit of jazz and classical mixed in with some other japanese influences, so it's nice to see I'm not alone in thinking this
(me at 2:40) "Hey! This sounds familiar! Maybe this actually was a kirby tune?" (me at 3:10) "OH THAT ALBUM" I legitimately never knew that STAFFcirc album was a cover album! I thought the names were just really strange but now it makes a lot more sense.
You led off with my favorite Kirby song of all time. Very cool video from you as always!! It seems crazy to think the Kirby style just happened to be the same as this composer's. Are you sure there's no historical connection? Maybe someone should ask Jun Ishikiwa and Hirokazu Ando in an interview sometime...
I'm actually not entirely sure, but I couldn't find "jun ishikawa" and "nikolai kapustin" mentioned on the same page until now. I suspect it's more like musical convergent evolution. in fact I cut out a section of the video about that: I think both composers tried to get an upbeat / happy / energetic feeling while drawing influence from jazz, and ended up with a similar VIBE as a result. but that's just a personal hypothesis at best.
Underrated channel, I found this channel looking up music by Barry Leitch (mainly looking up Top Gear and Top Gear Rally music) just finished watching the one about Tim Follin. Excellent content and subbed 👍👍👍
It kind of is tempo alright. My mind immediately jumped to Such Great Heights by Postal Service although upon re-listening the melody isn't very similar.
nope, my first exposure was from the staffcirc compilation. I'm not sure if that's "cooler" or "better" or whatever. gyms was definitely combining chip and kapustin before it was cool though
there definitely was! it's not uncommon to find phrases lifted from popular songs of the time, but this isn't a case like that. it's more of an interesting stylistic coincidence

Rasputin.
Kapustin - Kapusta (Cabbage) + in (common ending of Russian surnames)

IT'S KAPUSTIN' TIME
Bro, the "Ishikapustin" album is just genius ahahaha
Mykola Girshovich Kapustin is not Russian, but Soviet and then Ukrainian composer. He has born in Gorlivka, Donetsk region, in 1937.
Be honest, you heard this from gyms' cover in the FT demo files didn't ya?
