The guitar part was Kerry Livgrens fingerpicking practice piece. His wife said he oughta make a song out of it. He said nah, but she kept bugging him till he did it to stop the harrassment. From finger exercise to one of the great iconic songs in music history.

Eagles Life in the fast lane. Joe Walsh would always play that opening lick to warm up, Glen Fry finally asked him “ what song is that from? “ Joe said “ It’s just a warmup riff it’s not a song “. Glen replied “ it should be a song”. They immediately began writing it. 👍

Yes, it's sobering, but to me it's neither pessimistic nor optimistic, it's just the way things are. "All we do..." whether great or small, profound or tragic "crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see." We're only here for a brief moment, so "Don't hang on..."

This song originated as a hand-picking exercise for Kerry Livgren. His wife heard him playing it and said something like, "oh, you should put that on your album." The rest is history. Also, Livgren was always introspective and "feeling out his Christianity" and it is reflected in his lyrics. "Dust...." takes its meaning from the book of Ecclesiastes. "Nothing lasts forever but the Earth and Sky." "The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride", which is a line from The Wall. Another great Kansas song. That is one you should definitely listen to.

Guys, I'm half of a reaction channel you guys pretty much inspired. I'm not going to name it, as I'm not here to promote it. We're doing ok as a young channel.
Regardless, I've come to the conclusion that your success as a channel is pretty much the reason my channel is growing. You're genuine. Your reaction to this song, one I've known since I was on the streets as a juvenile sh!thead, and understood with absolute clarity, is pretty much on point. At 14, surviving on the streets, with violence an every day part of my world, this tune showed the double-edged sword of existence, and in the grand scheme of things, how trivial it all was. It was always weird to be a street thug with brains.
Regardless, This was your first real contact with this song, and you guys mostly got it.

This song is a reminder to be humble.
Because no matter who you are, how famous you are, what you do, what you make, how much money you have, how much nice stuff you have, none of that matters really because you are going to come to exactly the same fate as everyone else.
You will die, and you will be forgotten.

The main difference between AC/DC and Kansas is that, and I’m not shitting on Angus or the band here, but AC/DC songs all have a VERY similar tone and vibe to them. Across all of their albums I’ve ever listened to, they’ve pretty much stuck to one formula. It works for them, they’re a great band, but it leads to the fatigue you are talking about. The same can’t be said for Kansas.

      @clonexx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@voodoobill Lol yeah, Angus has a great sense of humor and self awareness. They’re a great band and know who their audience is and what their sound is. They stick to it and it works for them, which is great. It just doesn’t work with every band. ACDCs music is sort of timeless, in a way. Like if Metallica were still doing exact replicas of Ride The Lightning, MoP or Justice, it would have become really boring by now. I’m one of the vocal minorities who loved the Load era, well Load and a few songs off Re-Load. St. Anger is the only misfire for me and that’s mainly due to production value, that damn trash can snare and seemingly trying too hard to swoop in on the “Nu Metal” popularity by essentially having almost no solos on the album, which…meh. It’s their weakest album and the only one I just can’t listen to.

Folk was about at the end of its popularity by the time this came out in the mid 70s. Folk reached the height of its mass popularity in the 60s with artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Simon & Garfunkel, and Peter, Paul & Mary. When Dylan abandoned folk for electronic rock in the late 60s that started the shift away from folk and towards the dominance of rock. The 70s rock bands would still occasionally write a folk song or two, but this was one of the rare ones that became a massive hit.

Ryan, when you think that opportunities have passed, and you didn’t do what you wanted to do in life, just remember you still can do them. If you think you’re too old to learn guitar, just remember that the next 20 years of your life will pass (hopefully) whether or not you learn the guitar. So, why not take the time to learn?

You'll hear similar fingerpicked chord progressions in earlier folk/rock like Simon and Garfunkel and Bob Dylan and the like. They probably had a huge influence on Kansas as much as this song had a huge influence on the generations that followed. Standing on the shoulders of giants.

The fingerpicking style is known as Travis picking, where the thumb keeps a steady alternating bass pattern and the other fingers fill in the rest of the pattern. You hear it in a lot of styles - Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham uses it all the time.

No I think it's really just as simple as once you've heard a song every week for literally dozens of years, you start to get sick of it, no matter how good. That's why I find myself gravitating to the lesser cuts from bands because I'm such a music nut. Like I acknowledge all the "big" songs from bands, but I tend to say things that are like "3rd on the totem pole" for lack of a better term are the songs that I gravitate toward. Like AC/DC for example, my favorite song is For Those About to Rock, because you don't hear it NEARLY as much as the Shook Me or Thunderstruck or Highway to Hell's of the world. Don't get me wrong, those are CLASSIC and KILLER songs, but I'm just over it. But you catch me in the right mood half-cut at a bar and a good bar-band comes out with Highway to Hell I'm gonna be out on the floor doing the duck-walk lol. So take from that what you will.

@@djjazzyjeff1232 What you describe is definitely a thing, but there’s also that AC/DC songs are usually highly formulaic; even with tunes one has never heard before, there’s often the feeling that you’ve heard it a million times.

I was in 10th grade when this song came out. And the student teacher in our English class used this song's chorus as an example of how metaphors convey meaning. First he wrote on the chalk board "We are nothing, life is meaningless." Then below that he wrote "Dust in the Wind, all we are is dust in the wind."
But this song is not saying that life is meaningless. It is, as you discussed in your reaction, about putting our lives into perspective. And the lyrics, by the way, are based on passages from The Book of Ecclesiastes.

You have to see the trajectory from "Carry On My Wayward Son" through "Dust in the Wind" to the eventual breakup of the band. Kerry Livgren was going through a deep soul-search, eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity and the eventual breakup of the band.
