Marlin 1895 STP Trapper .45-70

  • The shortest little .45-70 you might ever put your hands on! The barrel is just a little over 16" in length, and it has a full length magazine. Pretty cool! I mistakenly mention in the video that the barrel is 18". I was thinking of legal shotgun barrel length, I suppose, if I was "thinking" at all. :-) The legal length for a rifle barrel is 16".

    Hickok45, you are one of the best gun video people on TH-cam. It's a lot of fun to watch you blast all those different targets with whatever gun you're reviewing. Your videos are pretty long, like Nutnfancy's, but unlike him you have a very soothing, pleasant manner instead of a panicked, vexing one. You've always got lots of things to say about your guns, but none of it is filler. Bless you, and your cinematographer too.

    Another great video! I've got a 1895 .45-70 made in 1972, pre-saftey, straight stocked, no checkering, that is definitely one of my favorites! Just a plain old .45-70. I really wouldn't buy the new version, unless I had no choice. So, I consider myself lucky.

    I just bought the 1895gbl guide gun today at the gunshow. Large loop, extended magazine, blued, brown laminated stock. I've been after one of these ever since I watched hickock45 shoot the ported barrel 45-70 last year. I sold my AK to get it and am very excited to pick it up on Thursday. Thanks Hickock for introducing me to the 45-70! Life is good.

    _SPLOOSH!_ "Eh, it did the job."
    Ha! It sure did. This was the first rifle round I shot, with my grandpa. Started my love for the lever-action and the pure, brutal simplicity of the .45-70 Govt. I don't use it at much, anymore (for deer, I prefer .308 Win), but it's still fun to let 'er rip at the range. Always get a kick of all the "kids" with their kitted-out ARs stopping what they're doing when they hear that big .45 crack 'em off! They're amazed that such an "old gun" can get tight groups with only a Ghost Ring for sights. Give me a lever-gun any day of the week over an AR. Stupid reliable, and no gas-impinging BS! Thanks for the vid, and keep shootin!

    The North-woods of Minnesota, Wesconsin, and Michigan are rife with the Juglans adhaero laminitus tree that was used in the production of your fine looking gun-stock. Marlin Firearms company is applauded for saving these states from severe overgrowth of this particular species since it has no other practical application and cannot be used for home heating as the naturally occurring adhesives are know to cause notoriously hot, jet-engine like chimney fires.

    • @garettfunk4889
      @garettfunk4889 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      5illyM00se I noticed that too, I think it is the same gun. I just watched Jurassic World with my dad today. Is it just me, but in that one scene when he is shooting at the Indominus Rex it looks like his rifle is firing in semi auto. He fired 3 or 4 rounds in a few seconds but you don't see him cycle the lever once. Damn Hollywood, get your firearm information correct.

    • @5illyM00se
      @5illyM00se 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      haha yeah I was listening pretty closely for the action to be cycled but I barely heard anything. And in the shots where you do see him fire the gun, there was surprisingly little to no recoil/muzzle rise. I've seen better gun effects in old westerns that predate JW by at least 40 years. The Trapper is an attractive gun but if you can't implement the physics correctly, it kinda becomes a hollow viewing experience. There's no substance to it. I did come for the dinosaurs so I won't bash the movie that badly. But it's not everyday you see a Marlin on set.

    Great video as always Hickok, and beautiful rifle you have there. I really like the setup for a trail/woods rifle. I agree with you on the recoil opinion also, most .45/70 especially commercially loaded is not all that bad and pushes bluntly more than rapidly/violently snapping. As far as old lever guns go, I feel my Savage 99 in .300 Sav kicks harsher than my Marlin Guide gun. Commercially loaded Remington/Federal .300 vs commercial .45/70 is about equal, but with my hot hand loads the Savage kicks noticeably more felt recoil toward the shooter than the Marlin does. Of course there are exceptions to this as well; I load a Hornady FTX bullet in .45/70 really hot (45/79) and that particular load kicks like a mule haha. Factory 400 grain clocks around ~1300 fps from my Marlin, my own load with 400 Gr is over 1400, and my 325 FTX load is a few hundred fps faster than that.

    This video is 10 years old and still brilliant. I wish the STP's were still around. Maybe Ruger will introduce their own version now that they own Marlin. But I am still waiting to see if they bring back the 39. Actually a stainless 39 would be awesome with the same kinda laminated stocks. It would go well with my SBL . The rest of my Marlins are early rifles and one o/u shotgun Model 90 all of course have walnut.
    At least some of these companies coming back are away from the Freedom group.
    Hickok45 was such a young man in this video.
    I don't know if I would want to give up the extra couple of inches off of the SBL and a round less for the STP? But what a saddle carbine the STP is. The SBL will have to do for now. And I was one of the lucky ones who actually got one of the SBL's that didn't have issues at all. The stocks meet up with the receiver, no tool marks , sights and rail are aligned properly. And it is pretty dang close to being as smooth as some of my JM Marlins. The ones for sale these days however are ballistic cost wise. Well everything at the moment is crazy priced.

    I have a .22LR that looks identical besides being automatic instead of lever action, been a very reliable tack driver on varmints for about 15-16 years now. Have three other lever rifles, two top notch Winchesters from the 1950's or 60's (pins n barrel straps ftw!) and a cheaper modern Marlin 30-30AS. Really hope you kept this one Hickok, damn fine survivor brush gun :)

      Brent B Which .22lr is it that you have which looks identical? Really curious!

      danielwow12 I have the .22 and 30-30AS locked up away from home right now, but close by so I'll let you know when I make it over there and pick them back up. The only differences are possibly longer barrel and semi auto instead of lever action (it shoots better than us though lol), and it came stock with a very high quality hooded front sight with fluorescent orange blade, not just a blade like this .45-70 did. The weight, weather resistance, and front sight always impressed me when I used the rifle.
