I recently saw a Mayday video where there was a fire that had started in the lavatory. After a few minutes, the fumes were so bad that passengers were gasping and choking. The commentator pointed that the supplemental oxygen (via drop down masks) was not made available because of an airline “rule” that prohibited their use when a fire was in the cabin. My feeling is that regardless of the risk to feed the flames (which had not yet entered the passenger cabin), it should hsve been used under those circumstances. The plane eventually crash lands at the airport and autopsies revealed that most people on board had already perished from toxic smoke inhalation. I would like to ask the very knowledgable audience of these reenactments what they think about this policy.

I hope airplane makers are able to figure this out nowadays. Buttons that are very crucial should flash in the pilots screen and provide instructions on what to do.
That makes me angry. Why would you even need a manual position for the switch, and who switched it to manual? If it was ground crew doing pressure tests they should switch it back.
Why? All on ground pressurization system testing, troubleshooting and fault confirmation is performed in the manual setting. The setting is also a redundancy if both CPCs should fail. In cold weather countries, especially during winter, it is by the way usually in the manual setting during over night parking.
The airplane should have backup systems, like individual alarms and flashing lights for all strategic gages to warn the pilots so this NEVER happens...VERY poor design. Bad communications between the pilot and ground crew...no one could understand...Deadly..!! I think that the young flight attendant sat with his girlfriend for a long time before going forward. He knew that she had most likely passed and he didn't want to live without her.
if Andreas did not fly the plane into the ground, i know it ran out of fuel, but could it have hit any buildings ? i remember it been on the news around the world but did not know the full facts till now, super sad, having lost a brother due to action that someone caused is painful and should never happened i feel everyones pain.. its super sad no matter what this great guy Andreas did he basic was flying a glider, and if the land had been flat history maybe have been alot different. sad for the loss of everyone on board RIP
it seems many Father's want their son to fallow in the family bussiness if they have one....even if the son is not interested.....that causes family problems at times. you should never force your child to do something they do not want to do.
Once again, this accident happened due to lack of common sense, communication and procrastination, the pilots had no clue what was going on back there with the passengers, had the flight attendants use their common sense to communicate the situation without wasting time and let the pilots know that the oxygen masks mysteriously drop down for some strange reason, maybe that would've given the pilots a better picture of what might have been the problem, it might have made them check the pressurization, but they had no clue the masks had fallen, lack of communication, common sense and procrastination caused this accident, but at least this was a better way to go cause they were all unconscious before the airplane crashed, to die that way was a blessing in itself, unlike other plane crashes where everyone is aware they are going to crash, yet they die with a horrifying fear
This is why regulations are written in blood. They should've contacted the flight deck to tell them the masks had dropped but they were following procedures. I don't know what flight attendants know about the cockpit but it's also possible they assumed a warning would've come on saying the masks had dropped and they were already working on an issue.
@deezkhajiit184 this is why it's so important to use common sense and they didn't, sometimes one must bend the rules in order to do the right thing, following procedures is not always the right thing when a situation is out of place
I really don't know if it's that simple or any of that would have helped. First: When the masks drop, you treat it like the emergency it likely is. As said, hypoxia can hit shockingly fast. It's why the safety warning is to put your mask on *first* before assisting anyone next to you. Because by the time you get their mask on, you're probably already in the danger zone yourself. Second: At least in the early moments of an emergency, if the pilots are dealing with a crisis, I don't know if you want the cabin crew popping in 30 seconds in. Best case scenario in a worst case scenario, cabin crew coming in with "the masks have dropped!" will be responded with "I'm sure they have, STFU, help the cabin, and await instructions". Again, assuming the pilots are dealing with an immense crisis, cabin crew is just going to distract them and add noise. The point is to get the plane stable, and then when everybody has a moment to breathe (no morbid pun intended), then we can take stock and start communicating with everybody. There's just no point in the cabin crew chiming in in the initial moments of an emergency. Third: An olive branch to the above though. After ~5 minutes with zero contact, the cabin crew really should have tried calling up. Which they do! But that's the problem. The masks drop because of the lack of oxygen. The cockpit doesn't have automatic deploying masks. And hypoxia hits after a minute. 2 minutes into the 12 minutes the cabin has, the pilots are out cold. A normal flight is all but doomed at this point. Any normal person that takes their mask off to try and head up to the cockpit is doomed. Luckily this flight had that super flight attendant though. If he had reacted faster and moved up sooner, could he have made the difference? Maybe, but we're well into "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" territory here. He still tried to revive them, but it failed. They don't really go into detail about how long he waited before trying to contact the pilots. But they did everything right in the first 2 minutes. But it was those first 2 minutes that sealed everybody's fate.
@@MoonLight-zk3gm If the masks are dropping you assume there's an emergency and you assume the pilots are aware of it. The last thing you'd want to do is go up and bug the pilots when they could be in the middle of handling a crisis.

The minute that it occurred the captain should have turned the plane around, the pilot failed every person on board 😢 so 😔 sad
Of course he shouldnt have turned around..🙆🏻♂️
That makes me angry. Why would you even need a manual position for the switch, and who switched it to manual? If it was ground crew doing pressure tests they should switch it back.
Why?
All on ground pressurization system testing, troubleshooting and fault confirmation is performed in the manual setting. The setting is also a redundancy if both CPCs should fail.
In cold weather countries, especially during winter, it is by the way usually in the manual setting during over night parking.
Just one button unbelievable
My ten toes have no wings so they stay planted to the ground
You dont drive either then, unless your toes have wheels?

The plane should have been designed not to take off on manual switch positive unless the override under emergency only
Contradicting yourself there…
Why didn't the person try to communicate 😮
Dude probably could barely stay conscious.
He was talking, but unaware that you need to press a button on the yoke to PTT. (Push to talk)
It literally said the frequency was still set to the take off location. They were too far away to reach by radio by the time they were over Athens.
Agree with the poor design and the bad communications between the controller and the pilot.
if Andreas did not fly the plane into the ground, i know it ran out of fuel, but could it have hit any buildings ? i remember it been on the news around the world but did not know the full facts till now, super sad, having lost a brother due to action that someone caused is painful and should never happened i feel everyones pain..
its super sad no matter what this great guy Andreas did he basic was flying a glider, and if the land had been flat history maybe have been alot different. sad for the loss of everyone on board RIP
The plane managed to fly into the ground just fine on its own..
it seems many Father's want their son to fallow in the family bussiness if they have one....even if the son is not interested.....that causes family problems at times. you should never force your child to do something they do not want to do.
Did you get lost? 🤔
Has this problem been solved s
o it will not happen again?
How? The pilots screwed up.
On 3 separate checklists they checked that the pressurization was on automatic. It was on manual.🤷♀️
An additional "cabin altitude" warning light was added after this accident.
Maybe it was the autopilot from the movie Airplane
@@deezkhajiit184 well you know what they say about assuming, this is why using common sense, communication and timing is crucial
Why they dont keep parachutes in plain
Due to logic
How is it possible that the oxygen masks are deployed and there is no automatic indication of this fact to the cockpit? BTW, the CGI F16's are way too close to the CGI 737
A passenger oxygen mask drop in a B737 triggers the master caution warning.
@@speedbird9313 ....and the "Passenger Oxygen On" light on the P5 overhead panel.
@@RBK855"PASS OXY ON"
Which they cant see..
@@speedbird9313 Of course they can see it. They just have to look up.
The "Overhead" light on the six pack will also illuminate.
@ "Just have to look up"? Does your B737 knowledge come from flying sims?🤔
The master caution was not reset by the flight crew for a while after the equipment cooling warning, so the six-pack was already on OVERHEAD and AIRCOND.
