I agree with you on the little details that are amazing with this filter. The lid/tray for the media container is genius.

Thank you so much for your review!! I was trying to decide on a filter -and I *really* wanted one that was self-priming, as our power 'flickers' a lot here. Yours was the first review I saw, so you are the one who brought my attention to the Tidal initially - thank you! Then I watched / read as much other info as I could. Finally, I ended up getting the Tidal 55 for my 29gallon tank. I just got it so I haven't had it long enough to make full judgement on it yet - but so far, I really like it! I'm setting up a new tank - my first tank in many many years & I hadn't even started cycling yet, because my prior filter died on me just as I was getting going. My water was a bit murky - and it cleared up within about 2-3 hours! (I did add Purigen to the filter basket, among other things...)
And I cannot believe how **quiet** this filter is - I honestly cannot hear it at ALL, not even when I'm standing right next to the tank!!! (Other than the water trickling down, as I have my water level low-ish right now, while I'm still tinkering w/ arranging things in the tank - but personally, I find that to be a rather pleasant soothing sound.. Once I fill the tank completely, I don't believe there will be any sound at all! The Tidal seems to have a lot of good features & it really does feel as if it's quite sturdy & well-built! I think I'm going to be very happy with it! I had considered the Aqueon, just because it was lower cost & was the only other self-priming HOB I saw -- but I am really glad I spent the extra money for the Tidal! Thank you again for helping in my decision!

Wow. I've never seen one of these unboxed. Great job pointing out all the details, Sean. These really are incredible! A filtering, skimming, flow controlling, heater cradling, non priming, floater valving contraption housed in an attractive box? Sign me up. Have to imagine the skimmer will do a nice job on any bio-film buildup at the top of the tank. This is like the Maserati of filters - SICCE and the Italians - thought of everything. I don't mind the Fluval/Aquaclears I have but boy do I want to try out one of these Tidals. 👍 Thanks for sharing this!

Hey Sean, I can certainly see why you got excited about this filter. It surpasses all the HOB types I've used over the years. It would appear they thought of everything. I just found this video so I'm late with my comments. That said, I imagine the maker has improved on the filter again by now. Keep up the good work.
Stay calm, stay safe and be healthy. Cheers, Terry

Well, since my 10 gl uns 60s is 7” tall I’m thinking about change my lousy tropica 60 passive co2 with a proper system!
I’ll try to put an atomizer just below that powerhead, and see how things will go!
It should be powerful enough to spread my co2 all around the tank.
It does skim the surface too,so I could possibly be able to get rid of the skim 350
(I love it but it’s ways too big for my tank)
I’ll definitely give it a shot!

Purfiltrum is a little better than purigen. Its great stuff.

I have always liked the fluval C series HOB filters I used and continue to use a lot of them also fluval canisters. Aquaclear has always been good to any aquarist as long as you maintain them they last forever! I know the tidal has the sicce pump which I am just getting to know in the saltwater reefing community because I have a couple of them. I almost bought this for my saltwater tank just to have the built in skimmer but would not be enough as I ended up buying a protein skimmer instead to help with the issue and it has the sicce needle wheel pump as it's power source so I guess I get the sicce pump either way but way more money. I am glad you are happy with it those penguins have been going long before I was on here and started with fish so you got your moneys worth out of them! I really like that skimmer built in I just may pick one of these up I have thought about it a couple times.

Hiya great review.... your a trip....got to have fun with it...I have heard mixed reviews...the bottom intake doesn't really suck in much...the cover for the motor where the bottom intake attaches sucks up more than the lift tube...if you add filter floss or any fine mechanical media it bypasses really bad...I use prefilters on all my hobs....I want a hob that I can use medium and fine not just coarse...torn between tidal and aquaclear...I love seachem products..I know you are going to get some bypass with all hobs but is it really that bad with the tidal?? thoughts/experience? loved the steampunk tank that was freaking cool...keep on tanking

Your video got my attention. I’ll be setting up a 125 Gallon Acrylic Tank soon. Does the Tidal Filter people have one big enough for a 125? It will be heavily planted tank, so I think I won’t need a big Canister Filter. Neither will use any Carbon, because I think it will absorb the nutrients from the tank. I’ve used both kinds of filters on a 55 Gallon Tank before. I liked them both, but I’m thinking about what would be best? Any advice would be welcome. I enjoyed watching! Thank you for sharing this video on the Tidal HOB.

Better to use two 75 Tidals. Good for 150 USG and 700 GPH (350 each).
DON'T put Anything in the white Media Bin except SEACHEM products.
The mesh bags that hold the Matrix and also Carbon act as Mechanical Filtration.
      Rinse out each water change.

It looks like the top of the skimmer slots aren't very high. I see you have a tank with a rim. Are you able to fill the tank well into the area masked by the rim, and still have the skimmer work? Looks like the skimmer could be entirely submerged.

  • @AquaticLogic

My issue with this setup and the stock setup by Seachem is that there is insufficient mechanical filtration to remove med/fine debris. It bypasses the coarse foam and clogs the bio-media displacing bacterial biofilms. Brand new bio-media is especially vulnerable because the pores are totally vacant. Something is going to fill the pores and you do not want solid waste doing it before the ~30 days it takes to establish the beneficial bacteria. This is a great product review, and I love all the new features which is a great addition to the crowded filter marklet. Its nice to see novel ideas and innovation in the old HOB! Thanks Pecktec

Aquatic Logic my concern is how shrimp safe it is cause I'm planning to use for a 12 gallon long tank, I'm probably gonna have to put some sponge over the surface skimmer.

The Third Impact did it fit your 12gal long? I'm just concerned about the length of the intake.

It worked for my aquascape, but you could mod it for your tank. Making a prefilter for the intake was difficult just because the end part is so large.

Great review. Do you think the Tidal 55 would be enough to filter my 50 gallon tank. I have 7 cardinals, 2 zebras, 4 gouramis, 4 Siamese algae eaters, 3 fancy guppies, 2 platies. Plant wise there are three large jungle val, two bunches of crypts, 4 plants of anubias. I have a aquatop forza 7 on it now. It would be great to simplify and not have to deal with tubing, etc. Thank you

I ended up with two on my 55. Mostly so there would be more flow. You could probably get away with one on a well planted tank.

Also Ive had problems after a power outage where the water drains out of the filters and my media dries out

Just getting back into the hobby after someone gave me my original 20 gallon high setup back. y The Fluval 206 I had with it has seen better days and I was agonizing whether to buy the parts to make it work, or to get a new filter. I've used Aquaclear filters, but was almost ready to get a Fluval C3 HOB - I saw this at Benson's pet center - the first time I've seen one, and decided to give it a try. It's great. My only knock on it is there isn't much in the way of foam mechanical filtration that comes with it. Solved by adding some filter floss. My only question for you - why didn't you use the matrix that comes with the unit? It looks to be exactly the same as what you used (pumice). Just curious.

Funny you mention the 206. I just got a free replacement warranty control valve from Fluval since mine was leaking. I'm still ready to sell my 206 and get this HOB filter. The canister is such a task to clean and makes mess when doing so.

I see no water movement in the tank behind you, how is that being filtered?

Do you know any mods for baby fish or shrimp getting sucked into the skimmer on these?

Que lastima que no haya traducción al español para este excelente video. De 20 videos que he visto sobre los filtros tidal este es el único que explica acerca del funcionamiento del skiner. Gracias por hacer videos de excelente calidad con información!!!

Just ordered it. Now all I need to find is the 55 gallon tank. Lol. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to find a 55. I want to use just one large aquarium and divide my betta's. With a little modification of to soften the flow for them, it should be amazing! Do you think this will be enough filtering for the divided sections or do you recommend I put small filters into those sections? It's three betta's, so I bought two dividers.

Aerith Gainsborough run a small hose over the intake hole to the farthest partition so u know the water is moving across the tank.

What about loosing small fish to the skimmer intake? How can this be rectified?

Hi. I just watched your video. My son moved out and I’m left with his 55 gal that has a Tidal 55 filter. The filter is in desperate need of change. I’m buying the bottom foam filter,, Seachem matrix carbon, Bioxmatrix and I have a Purigen bag I put in there a couple of weeks ago. How do I layer it all? Right now he has so many old bags in there they go to the top of the basket. Do I use a fine mesh bag or high flow? Does it matter if they have zippers or strings? There is a Pleco about 10 inches and a Leopard gourami (I think it’s a gourami). Sorry for all the questions but the tank is a mess and you know the Tidal so well! Thanks!!

So, if side-by-side, between the Fluval C2 you did an "unboxing" and this Tidal 55, which features and which HOB filter do you ultimately prefer. I have been a Hagen fan since 1984. Just now getting back into an aquarist's life after 23 year absence.

Can this be used for any other size tank accept 55 can you use it on 20 gallons and up or would that be too much filtration

+John Spencer yeah if the fish you have don't mind some turbulence. It may be ok for a 20. Definitely a 30 would be fine.
