  • Dionne Warwick sings 'Walk on By'' at age 24 live in an intimate restaurant bar, the '27 Club' in Knokke, Belgium, on New Year's Eve 1964. The Burt Bacharah/Hal David protege on the cusp of fame. The hit single was originally a b-side, recorded on the same day as 'Anyone Who Had a Heart'.
The full concert recording of 27 minutes is well worth seeing:- • Dionne Warwick - live ...
The Wall Street Journal has a story about the drama and background to the song. Here's the public first paragraphs - you have to subscribe for the full story:-
“Walk On By,” written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for singer Dionne Warwick in 1963, was unusual for its cool sophistication and lyrics from a woman’s perspective on a failed relationship. After the song was released in ’64, the single reached No. 6 on Billboard’s pop chart.
Recently, Mr. Bacharach, Ms. Warwick and studio pianist Artie Butler recalled the song’s evolution. Mr. Bacharach’s latest album, released in December, is a deluxe edition of “Blue Umbrella” (Big Yellow Dog), with co-writer and singer Daniel Tashian. Edited from interviews.
Burt Bacharach: "In 1963, lyricist Hal David and I were focused on Dionne Warwick. We had signed her a year earlier to record our songs, and we were signed to Scepter Records.
Dionne had a singular voice that was perfect for us-young, earthy, edgy and confident. The first three singles we wrote for her-“Don’t Make Me Over” in ’62 and “This Empty Place” and “Make the Music Play” in early ’63-charted but weren’t big pop hits.
Hal and I began writing “Walk On By” in mid-’63 at our office in New York’s Brill Building. ... "

If you’re correct then please explain why there is not one single person of color in this old ‘video’. I’m really not trying to be contentious but isn’t it obvious that this was produced by a group of old white men with the singular purpose of making money from a white audience? I’m reasonably sure they had little or no interest in promoting Dionne or in her wonderful music! She’s in her 80’s now but her music will live forever thank God! 🎶

    • @MC_Elie

@@SaneTXJane Remember, if you will research carefully, the year 1964 is the legal END for racial segregation. In other words, people can now mingle and work together without having to use racially divided public facilities and transport.
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), so long as "separate but equal" facilities were provided, a requirement that was rarely met in practice. Then came the doctrine's applicability to public schools WHICH WAS UNANIMOUSLY overturned in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren. In the following years the WARREN COURT further ruled AGAINST racial segregation in several landmark cases including Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States (1964), which helped bring an end to the Jim Crow laws.
The video that you see was PRODUCED in 1964, the beginning year that ended racial segregation.
BRAVO to all these wonderful WHITE AMERICANS who made this hallmark journey to accept and appreciate a BLACK PERFORMER and a WOMAN that bravely sings among them. They have let those prejudice go out the door (If they had any in the past) I see this as an invitation for others to do the same. That it is alright now to mingle with anyone outside your race. This exemplifies to let go of your apprehensions, fears, and worries due to past trauma.
Now regarding to "white men" with a singular purpose of making money from a white audience, WOW, as if we are psychic enough to read their minds eh?
it is unwise to judge an individual as to what purpose or multi-purpose they have in mind in making this production.
YES, I will agree, they want to make money. That's the ulterior motive of the producer or executive financier, they want that ROI (return of investment for those not aware).
But could making money be the ONLY PURPOSE? If that is so, I WILL STILL SHAKE THEIR HAND and THANK THEM for BACKING UP this music and artist with their money. WITHOUT THEM, this wouldn't have been possible. Without their open mind and possible artistic vision, then we wouldn't have these great hits. It may take another year or so to find another artist of a different race to finally break through the scene.
Could you imagine if they found a CHINESE or FILIPINA lady singing for a white audience in 1964, would the impact be the same? How about a half black or half white artist? Would that also create a controversy?
So why did the producer or producers feel the need to do this when they know it could create anger and possible violence?
WHAT IF their other purpose is to make a breakthrough? How about creating enough controversy for the artist to be the TALK OF THE TOWN? How about the exploration of a different facet of 60's JAZZ/Latin styled music? Why not make a MUSIC VIDEO to show others that THIS IS THE END OF SEPARATION. This is a video for INVITATION.
THE SHOCK VALUE is enough as it is to keep everyone curious who are still in their zone of RACIAL DIVIDE. It takes time to break through YEARS and DECADES, and CENTURIES of discrimination. Maybe that's one reason you still don't see a single black person in the background audience. Maybe the director is still not comfortable with the idea of MIXING people yet in the U.S. so they filmed this at the 27 Club, in BELGIUM where there is no racial divide to begin with.
This is 1964, like I said, the BEGINNING YEAR that ended segregation LEGALLY in the U.S.
Lastly, not all "WHITE" Americans come from one single lineage. Look carefullly, you might find Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or even Persians in this audience. But who's to know? I see nothing but people just having a good time and I thank them for being there. The producer is probably thinking "OKAY BRING THE MUSIC OUT, THEN LET'S MAKE A VIDEO, LET'S END THE DIVIDE little by little"
Because not everyone is ready yet so it's best to keep the audience as it is.
Behind the music could be MILLIONS of people just listening in; JAPANESE, GERMANS, PERUVIANS, BRAZILIANS, etc.
If you're still having doubts, then please research and try to find a crew member or anyone in the production team that made this. They could probably give you a better answer. Not sure how the producer will react to your question (if he's still alive).
Not sure if he will directly say "Oh yeah I took her in because I want to MAKE MONEY! She was a gamble for the company but hell I'm glad I rolled the dice!"

I think that Dionne is the greatest pop singer ever. She would toss in vocal acrobatics that would slay most singers today as if it were absolutely nothing. She jumps all over the place in this piece and goes from sweet to funky to operatic to pensive -- really I can't think of another singer who can do what Dionne did.
