This might be a stretch but the balloon girl might symbolise childlike innocence as she is always seen holding a balloon which what children typically portrayed to do.
At first, Sam was offered the pin from cherry and we know that the pins are used to pop the balloon so it probably symbolises popping her innocence? Popping one's cherry can also mean taking one's virginity (which always associated with innocence) right? So her balloons being popped using the pins taking from the cherries could be referring to how children could also be sexualised and abused in the industry.
Later on, she also mentioned how she used to be in soap opera when she was five to six old which means that she was exposed to the dark side of the industry since she was very young.
Sorry if this sounds stupid or anything .I just think that her character is very intriguing somehow. Thanks for the decoding!

it's vital that he never pays the rent. people keep acting like he should be focusing on paying it but if he does then he's not fulfilling the journey he would be giving up only to fall in line. as oscar wilde said, "if you want to be remembered, dont pay your bills", at the end he watches all the b.s he left back in that apartment and finally lets go of that. if he paid for the rent hed be keeping himself stuck in that space... also the symbol he wrote wasnt on a check but a parking ticket.

one of my favorite details that i personally picked up on is the fact that the entire movie really has no weight on sam's life outside his emotions. he's still homeless, no car, no job, etc. even if he hadn't pursued the mystery, he'd more than likely still be in the same spot, maybe better off, but probably not. brings me back to the talk he had with his friend while they played with the drone, about life choices.

Hey Jeremy. Loving your analysis so far! Another note, which in this case you might find funny: The scrap of paper he uses to note the hobo code glyph is the back of a parking ticket. The grey text at the top is a set of payment instructions. We can give Sam credit for being resourceful!

There are several ways I relate to Under the Silver Lake.
    - In the cemetery scene, we see Alfred Hitchcock’s tombstone. I believe some Hitchcock films had a lot of influence on Silver Lake.
Vertigo by Hitchcock has a clueless main character who just happens to figure out a mystery but who never understood the woman he was obsessed with. Women are also exploited in that movie.
Rear Window has the protagonist looking at neighbor’s apartments with binoculars.
Strangers on a Train has several weird characters. All these are noirs/neo-noirs.
There is a David Lynch vibe in parts of Silver Lake (Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive).
A possible homage is Blow Up by Antonioni which has a similar open ending like Silver Lake.
And for a cult in a mystery, Rosemary’s Baby might be an influence.
What sells Silver Lake for me is the slacker protagonist.
That fits in a tiny sub genre which I've enjoyed called stoner neo-noir.
Part of that is the excellent The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice which is good.
Silver Lake continues in that style of the bumbler backing into becoming a crime investigator.
I enjoyed the channel taking the time to work through all the puzzles and themes in the story.
What does it mean? That life can be strange?
Maybe the dude said it best; *”Strikes and gutters, ups and downs."*
Too bad Silver Lake didn’t make money for A24. But movies like this, even Vertigo and The Big Lebowski had trouble at the box office.

I think it's important to note the framing and the look of those girls Sam sees at the coffee shop. They are framed through a rectangle (symbolizing a TV) and they clearly resemble the actresses from 2 Broke Girls. This is all intentional. It clearly lays out how Sam only sees women as objects for his entertainment.

Really great video, though I generally don't agree that Sam is the dog killer. He has violent outbursts (the kid, jesus and the songwriter*) but they all come from a place of hightend emotions and desperation. Killing dogs, especially apparently killing hundreds of them, would be more of a calculated or sadistic action.
I think the dogs symbolize innocence or the general concept of "the soul", especially that of young women. In the scene where we see "Beware the dog killer" painted on the street, it's in front of a very shady garage audition. I think a lot of the women there also still have their dog with them. These girls are just starting their careers, and are still outside the Hollywood system. They can also still smell Sams skunk smell, just like his "girlfriend" the Actress. Later, when Sam is at the party where he meets his ex, nobody seems to be aware of the smell anymore even though skunk spray is famously hard to get off as Sam even mentions (i think) during the bathroom scene.
This would also fit with the Songwriter being connected to Coyotes, since Coyotes sometimes eat smaller pets just like Saras, which could point to the Hollywood taking in these young actresses, "chewing them up and spitting them out".
When Sam says that his dog died recently, I think it either means that he got disillusioned by the system in general, or by his girlfriend leaving him to focus on her career, dating a well connected boyfriend etc. I can't explain the dog treats though.
*While writing this, I noticed that Sam is violent three times: to a boy, a man and an old man respectively, which is also a set of three. Also, I know that in a lot of folk traditions there is a lot of focus on the three life stages of a woman: The Girl/Virign, The Mother and The Crone/Wise Woman. Maybe there is some kind of connection to that?

The score is very Bernard Herrmann-esq and might be my favorite thing about the film. Its just so perfect.
Fun fact Joker won best score that year and UTSL wasn't even nominated. Joker's got a great score too but its super simple by comparison. Not that simple devalues it but to not even acknowledge this score shows you how worthless these awards ceremonies are.
About that shady casting couch type audition around the corner from his house. DRM said he actually saw an audition exactly like what is shown in the movie in real life shortly after he moved to LA. He said it really skeeved him. There was an actually a sign that said "Movie Audition".
Also when the actress girl comes over in the beginning with sushi, she says "Weirdly, I had an audition around the corner..." She's definitely been going to those auditions, and those girls are all likely standing in line to become another "group"

If you start with the genre, neo-noir, then LA is a central character to the story. Hell, it's almost like the genre is a central character in the story. So a lot of clues are in the scenery. Things merely hinted at, such as the girls gathering for "movie auditions", in some creep's garage. And yet many people's first instinct is that Sam is the dog killer. Of course the camera [Hollywood] tells us that these girls are only relevant as objects to be lusted after in Sam's narrative.
I think it's an allegory for Hollywood offering the greatest of temptations, to sate it's own appetite, then pointing the finger at the audience for not resisting them.

How weird is this? I was planning to review this film as well, but not deal with any of the code breaking, at least in the review. I figured that I'd later study the codes just to continue them. The Hobo Code sounds fabulous. Morse Code is a classic. I'm sure there's tons of others. Then just as I'm thinking this the video shows a decode that's a bunch of random letters and the content creator mentions it hasn't been decoded yet. But it contains the initials of my stream, JRYE. You see that a lot in life. I'm almost convinced that we are all just taking laps around the same track and that you can leave clues for yourself on it. Best if those clues are ones that The Adjustment Bureau doesn't notice and therefore doesn't clean. You could just call it God or a Guardian Angel. But for some reason I think of it as breadcrumbs that I've left for myself to find when I need them. I say that "I left them," which is not completely how I see it, but this post is already getting long.

Hey Jeremy: I have a note for your analysis: @8:21 (your video) please re-watch this scene and note that what we're seeing is a person feasting on another person (not on a dog). The person being eaten resembles Jefferson Sevence. To me this implies a foreshadowing of what might happen 6 months after the movie ends (desperate wives resorting to cannibalism). Upon my fourth watching of this film, I believe I have identified the man/woman cannibal in this scene to be his nudist neighbor. It was only during her/Sam's scene of intimacy at the end of the film that I saw the resemblance.
Side note: "iWannaFuck!" is what the parrot red herring speaks to my ear. Birds and reptiles share similar nervous anatomical sophistication, so to me what we're hearing is the compulsive reptile brain engaging in a repetitive fixation. Sam's aimless life is in part a result of his fundamental base motives ("I want to fuck") being served on a silver platter: Actress brings him food and sex.

Since the squirrel dies, could that scene not signify the death of Sam's preparation and resourcefulness. Maybe the point he just gives up on chasing the hollywood dream.
I think you might be wrong about Sam only caring about getting laid. It's not like he puts a lot of enthusiasm into it. I suspect that you are judging LA relationships on a par with regular relationships. We know that Hollywood relationships are often contrived affairs. I'd even go so far as to say Sam's girlfriend probably left him for the guy who got her the modelling job. He's just networking. Sara accuses him of masturbating while watching her, and his obvious shame leads us to believe he might have been. But was he? I think his embarrassment could have been a genuine indication that he wouldn't dream of doing such a thing. i think the only time you can genuinely accuse him of objectifying women, is when the women are already in the form of an object, like his penthouse cover.

He only saw her at his absolute lowest when he made it back to his apartment and she never touched him because she wasn’t real, he even peaked in his fucking sock drawer to look for her. The three women adoring over a millionaire in a bunker is a twisted version of the movie he watched earlier. He smells bad not due to a skunk but because his schizophrenic and very common problem for them is they smell absolutely awful and do not remember to bathe. The homeless king at the end was a cop questioning him, see the star on his chest and his tone asking about the biscuits. Everything that he “figures out” about this giant conspiracy theory is solved by shit he already has lying around his apartment. The bird at the end is saying “not a friend. Not a friend.
