- Throughout its history as an industry, Hollywood has shown a remarkably enduring fondness for the war film. It’s easy to see why, as they often capture the horror and triumph of armed conflict, and the genre allows directors like Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan to showcase their talent.
Many of the best war films are those that draw on at least some real history to add texture to their stories, whether the focus is on WWI, WWII, Vietnam, or some other conflict. Oftentimes, viewers don't even recognize that the characters in these harrowing stories are based on real people.

Not sure if it really counts as a war movie, but Master and Commander (and the books it was based on) are based on Thomas Cochrane, the 10th earl of dundonald.
I cannot recommend the entire "Master and Commander" series highly enough. (I know that's just the name of one of the books, but you know what I mean). They were exciting and even humorous at time. The nautical terminology can be a bit challenging at times but that's one of the reasons the books are so immersive. I plowed through the whole series in no time. Twenty books, I think?

Hasford would later in life serve a three month prison sentence for hording nearly 10,000 (yes, TEN THOUSAND) of unreturned library books he kept in a rented storage space.
Stanley Kubrick purposefully strayed from historical accuracy when it came to the boot camp by wanting two rows of toilets on each side of the head to mirror the shots of the recruits to symbolize how they are in "a world of shit."
Full Metal Jacket was also indirectly involved with a court decision that resulted in the only time a song was successfully banned by the US government (later overturned by the Supreme Court) when the hip-hop group 2 Live Crew used a dialogue sample from the film for the song "Me So Horny."

Everybody thinks that The Last Samurai title refers to Tom Cruise character but it actually refers to Ken Watanabe's character.

First of all, I highly doubt that a lot of people think that the title refers to Tom Cruise' character and second, I think the title doesn't refer to Ken Watanabe's character but Samurai is the plural form of the word.
@@pxlbltz When released, many people definitely did think the title referred to Cruise's character. Movie posters emblazoned with his face underneath the words "The Last Samurai" probably had something to do with it.
Ken Watanabe’s character is based on the samurai Saigo Takamori who did lead the final rebellion against ultra rapid modernization and westernization (to oversimplify the causes) in 1877. In Japan, they call him the last samurai. But the poster clearly makes the viewer (unaware that samurai is both singular and plural) think it refers to Tom Cruise.

Private Ryan was not a captive in the movie. It's just that his unit's location was unknown.

I wouldn't expect anyone at Ranker to know, but the book From Here to Eternity was written by James Jones about his experience stationed at Schofield Barracks army base on Oahu on December 7th, 1941. It was made into the classic movie, starring Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, the wholesome Donna Reed as a prostitute/taxi dancer and Frank Sinatra as Pvt Maggio which won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Much of it was filmed on location at Schofield, where the Quad barracks still house soldiers.
I read the book and watched the film, fantastic book & film combo!

There was a second character in The Patriot that is based on a real person. Mel Gibson's character of Benjamin Martin is loosely based on Francis Marion.
Correct. Also unlike Martin who treated his slaves well, Marion was a horrible master to his slaves and punish them severely.
He was such a horrible person that most of his slaves join the British Army since they would rather fight and die for the King than return being Marion's slave.

And if you saw it, it was on TV reruns, 1/5th of it at a time, because something better eventually came on. Just good enough to watch when nothing else was on the TV.

No, Private James Francis Ryan was NOT being held, which would imply he had been captured, he was working his way through Europe with his unit. The point of rescuing him was his brothers getting killed in action which left him as the sole remaining son. His death would have meant the end of his family line.

The Last Samurai is one of my favorite movies of all time, and now I’m a tad bit disappointed because i actually thought Nathan Algren was real🤦🏼♂️ oh well, can’t say I’m surprised tbh. Great video!

I was really amazed to learn that “Patton” (portrayed expertly by George C. Scott) was based on a real man named Joey Jojo Junior Shabadoo.
It makes sense that the character in the last The Last Samauri is based on a Frenchman. because during that time a foreign nation would not look to the US for military instruction.

Very likely is based on a real person, just there is no information about them. Stone based Platoon off of his experiences. All Quiet on the Western Front is base on Remarque's experience in WWI. It's how they've kept the memories of their friends alive.

Richard Todd as Major John Howard in the Longest Day. Oh wait a minute, Maj Howard was real and so was Richard Todd. There is scene where an unnamed Lieutenant reports to Major Howard. Who was that unnamed Lieutenant? Why it was Lt. Richard Todd. During the filming of one sequence Todd stepped out of character to tell them they got it wrong.

Another character based on a real person that isn't on this list is Orlando Bloom's character in Kingdom of Heaven. He was real and was left in charge of Jerusalem when the crusaders went to war.
The siege of Jerusalem at the end was pure fiction though.

Sgt. Elias was real and he was a Mexican American in real life. Hollywood did not want a Mexican to star as Elias.
Black Hawk Down features a star studded cast and EVERY soldier portrayed is a real individual. Probably would take 20 minutes to go thru everyone in the movie. Also, in my opinion it’s the best war movie ever made.
When one "volunteer" during a war back then, does that mean he or she has no salary or benefits?
Salary, yes, depending on how much money the country or the general (or the nobleman or the king) had. For a while, Washington financed his army by himself. That's another reason why pillaging was so common in those times. Benefits - it depended on what was available. At the time, most countries had not any system of public healthcare, pensions, unemployment insurance, worker's compensation, parental or medical leave; so, whatever there was, it came from civilian charities or religious groups.
Please notice that now, in civilized countries, those are not "benefits," but legal rights every most workers with a contract have, and independent workers too, depending on their country's laws. Chilean here. I worked independently for many years. I only had to contribute a 7% of my income to have full healthcare in the public system. When I had no income and I couldn't contribute, I still had a right to basic healthcare for free. It's good when your country doesn't beat you up when you are already on the floor ✌

I highly recommend you to check the channel Let's Ask Shogo. A real-life Japanese man talks about traditional culture and social problems in his country. He praised The Last Samurai for its mostly accurate representation of his culture; he also points at the mistakes. At any rate, *way* a better film than 47 Ronin in that department. Shogo also has a video about how Bushido has been the bane of modern Japanese - not many countries have people dying from overwork at offices (Karoshi).
I would also recommend the movie Fear and Trembling (Stupeur et Tremblements, 2003). I bet you would not resist to work in an office like that - which is highly representative of how Japanese working culture is - thanks to Bushido.
