  • On May 14th 2017, I never visited the Isle of Wight as part of 'All The Stations' ... or did I? It was time to go back to the Island to tell the story of why people think that it wasn't visited.
    Unless of course, this whole video is faked as well ...
    There's an 'Island Line Rover' ticket btw, which allows you unlimited travel all day, up and down the line if you want to explore it: www.nationalrai...

    I went to the Isle of Wight before the "New" (1938) stock went there, when they were still using the 1923 stock. The trains were formed into 3 car trains (Known as 3 VEC units) and 4 car trains (Known as 4 TIS units) which was quite clever because when they ran as 7 coach trains in the summer they were known as 7 VEC-TIS units

    Journey back in time on the Isle of Wight's wonderful ex-Bakerloo Line Underground rolling stock which I remember from living in Queensbury, Middlesex, NW London (1943-57) where our house backed onto the line - brilliant memories of regular rides up to London.

    I am from the island and so I grew up with only the Island Line train for trains as a child (and the Havenstreet Steam Railway but that is more of a tourist attraction), and I have only ever been from Ryde St. Johns or the Esplanade -> the Pier-head . Now I live it London and still find it hard to believe how common and every day trains are. They were something I got very infrequently growing up.

    As an Isle of Wightian, this does look like through enough evidence! Whilst I use there trains very rarely, I can say they are quite an efficient system for the old relics they are, it was pretty even when I raced one from end to end using a motorbike on the roads!

    Lived in 20 miles from Portsmouth over 20 years of my life before I went to uni in Birmingham.
    And I've only been to the Isle of Wight twice - once on my own for a day just before I started Aston Uni, second time a few years back for a family holiday.
    The ferries and hovercraft are pretty expensive for foot passengers, I think even more so for non residents.
    And my mum says car ferries can cost more than a ferry to France.

    Brading Signal Box is not in use, but has been restored by a group of local volunteers. It's only open in the summer, on selected days and hours that can be found by googling "Brading Station Heritage Centre". Its well worth a visit, for £2 you get a private tour the restored island platform and signal box and you are allowed to have a go on the levers. There is also an excellent tea room and exhibition behind the bench Geoff was filming on.

    Isle of Wight could do with a 12.5 km single-track tunnel with Tube style stops at Portsmouth & Sothsea, Gosport, and Ryde - at parking lot off George St, near Somerfield store. Likely cost 200 million pounds. Many people will object to better access to the island, but it will boost the economies of the island, Gosport and Portsmouth.

    You make me smile, as my life is not the best living in drum chapel in Glasgow which isn’t the most wealthy place ever , sadly I’m an alcoholic because it’s how I cope with sad feeling with my dad’s pass and sexual acts I’ve been through and a live of constantly getting disrespected and bullied which I’ve been struggling with it and done self harm as well and attempted suicide many times.
    Drum chapel is a horrible place, with high levels of poverty and I’ve seen your video of Glasgow and the place you were was really nice (Glasgow central) unfortunately that’s not everywhere
    Glasgow has the 3rd highest of child poverty in the UK
    I’ve had to do to illegal prostitution to make money to help my mum with cancer, I’ve tried other things to make Money but the rest ain’t working, and it’s mind blowing since I’m only 15 and I’ve been through all this pain
    Also this video is very interesting and I’ve subscribed to your channel

    Interesting about the 20/40 minute lop-sided clockface timetable, they removed the passing loop at Brading some years ago (but left the disued platform and bridge in situ), with the intention of running a service every 20 minutes (passing loops are in the right places for this at Ryde St John's and Sandown) but 2 or 3 of the units became unserviceable (and have since been scrapped, or canibalised for spares), which meant they no longer had enough trains to run a 20 minute headway. To run a balanced 30 minute service, they would need to pass at Brading, but as they'd already removed the loop there (!!!!) they decided on this compromise 20/40 minute arrangement until further notice!!

    • @2themoon863

      But in the video there’s plainly a double track at that station; is there not a way to access that track from the nominal main line, at one or both ends?

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2themoon863 Yes, it's just a case of reinstating the 2nd track through the disused platform at Brading, which is what they're talking about doing now, but at the moment there's no track there, which is why they cannot run an even 30-minute headway service with the two trains.

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2themoon863 I think you're being misled by the presence of the footbridge at Brading. If you pause the video at 8:09, take a screenshot and/or zoom in, you will see that there's actually no track running past the platform on the far side (the same as at Mansion House.platform 2 on the Underground in London(. Everything apart from the track has been left in situ.. I have been to Brading lots of times since the singling was done in 1990 or thereabouts, and got off there a couple of times, so I'm 100% certain this is correct.

    But to really do the isle of wight railway, you have to travel by hovercraft too, as it used to be a rail run service, as were the various ferries!

    You never went… round the “looper” or shepperton branch. Historic Kingston (the stone, phone boxes and 3men in a boat), Teddington “the home of Measurement”, Kempton Park and the largest triple expansion steam engine, , through the fulwell tunnel that used to flood and generate clouds of steam from the 3rd Rail. Twickenham, the home of rugby, Barnes London wetland center. There are a lot of people in SW London looking out for their stations….

      Yes they did - watch the day they did Longcross - when they got to Staines they said they were getting a lift to Shepperton. Not all stations were covered in detail in the films, but they did every single one. look at the Map

      Area 51 No they're not. The Cross -Channel ones are long gone (I'm glad I had a few chances to ride on them before they bowed out) but the Southsea - Ryde service is still very much alive, with new craft now in service, and is now the only surviving hovercraft route in this part of the world.

    All that money collected in the Kickstarter campaign actually wasn't required for travelling/accommodation but went towards the production of this very video as Geoff knew in advance they'd not be able to do the Isle of Wight. Good job, shame the dosh ran out before they could polish the last bit starting at 12:14 ...

    Is that white font on dark green background standard across National Rail now? I thought it was a Southern (the franchise, not the old Southern Railway) thing and Island Line was never part of the Southern franchise.

    5:00 - See how he moves the drip from his bottom lip to his top lip and then whilst misdirecting you with his hand he lets it fall. Old magicians trick... therefore fake video using these skills. This is all done on Croydon tram station (like all his videos). Digitally edit in a tea shoppe here and a tree there and bingo! The train shots are all done with his Hornby collection... and magnets (or is it mirrors). Got your number!! Clever stuff though Geoff.

    New to your videos thoroughly enjoying them Geoff, re the Island Line I notice you do not comment on how old and decrepit these trains are and so shaky you need a travel sickness pill to get anywhere. I feel sorry for the system that unlike London no money is used to upgrade it also talk of closing the line down very bad in the 21st century.

    Doesn’t London Underground have a couple of their retired underground trains that could be sent over to the Isle of Wight at least they would be younger
