    Cthulhu wars is an asymmetric game that plays 2-4 out of the box but goes to 8 with expansions. The Earth is on its last legs as the horrors from the Lovecraft Mythos bring ruin and destruction to the planet. You are one of these ancient destroyers and you seek to bring the most Doom to the planet.
    Cthulhu Wars blends area control, asymmetry, and out right war across the Earth and cosmos with additional map packs. Can you lead your faction to the fore or will you fall beneath the trampling feet of the enemy Old Ones!

    Your tutorials of Cthulhu Wars are the best somebody can find on youtube. They really helped me a lot to better understand the rules and the game.
    It is a pity that the game doesn't come out a lot in my group, that's why I am not buying all that amazing stuff. Indeed, I would buy everything haha!
    Thanks!

      I do plan on making an up to date video tutorial but I am waiting for the final balance changes for Cthulhu and Tcho-Tcho before I sit down and film.

      Really looking forward to the Ancients Faction, they look like they may add a lot ore table talk/dealing to the game.

    From the future here, nice video, really help me understand how things work, specially the neutral factions. Now I´m looking into getting this game from a while ago, but its always out of stock and super crazy expensive. They reprint more not to long ago, so now it looks easier to get, still very expensive, but really looking for it, now I see a lot of more factions are out now, not only the acient ones but sultan and other stuff, still trying to understand how that works, but going for the base game and the factions, sleeper, wind walker and gate opener, not in that order, but as I can get them.

    I think Great Old One Pack 1 is the best of the Great Old One packs. It's got a great wide range of abilities that are good for various factions and playing styles.

      It's interesting that the last time CW was in rotation at the table we seemed to opt out of any add-ons. We all kind of realized that with so many available factions to choose from at 5 players, that the add-ons were just "too much" for us. I think gamers with smaller collections that have games they play many times in a row will get the most out of add-ons but for collectors having alrge collections, just having all the factions avilable is more than good enough for replay variety.

      Yeah, I tend to go easy on the add-ons now and I have officially stopped 'collecting' as I know I'll never get them to the table. We just mostly play with a neutral monsters that compliment each faction.
      - Ghasts or Moonbeasts for Cthulhu because they are brilliant for feeding to Shoggoths.
      - Wamps for Black Goat because they help spread out and complete Spell books faster and they have a brilliant annoyance factor.
      - Gugs or Gnori for Yellow Sign because they can just sit there and occupy gates and discretion tokens.
      - Star Vampires or Dimensional Shamblers for Crawling Chaos.
      It' very rare we use independent GOOs. But when we do it's usually GOO Pack 1

    • @schnaxlwirt
      @schnaxlwirt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mostly playing with 2-3 players. I dont have a clue about the new factions. I often read that people suggest getting a neutral faction for more variety. will you talk about the new factions aswell?

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are playing 2-3 and only have the base box I would suggest getting a Terror or Neutral Monster box first. It will allow you to add variety to the 4 factions in the box with the least amount of money spent. Next up probably get a map. The advantage of playing with only 2-3 is you already have enough variety just by having players switch out factions so you want something that can change up those factions the most which the Maps and Terrors will help the most with.
      After that get a 5th Faction probably Opener or Sleeper then look into Azathoth.
      I honestly think that will give you the most variety for your gaming dollar.
      Let me know if that helps!

    This is a really old video granted but I'm going through this atm. I'm not going to own everything but I only have the base box atm. I'm thinking:
    (3-5 players)
    - Base game (obviously)
    - 2 Factions
    - 2 boxes of extra monsters (Lesser old ones, terrors etc etc)

      Hello, thanks for watching! I always try to keep up with comments.
      So basically in order:
      2 Factions depending on player skill, for easier game play Windwalker and Sleeper, for more variety and skill go Windwalker and Opener of the Way.
      Great old one Pack 2.
      Cosmic Terrors Pack.
      Maps:
      Library at Celaeno.
      Primeval or Shaggai Map I like them both equally.
      High Priests are a very strong "Must Own" so can't go wrong their! Hope this helps and enjoy the game!

      @@OffTheShelfGameReviews Thanks. Sounds like a plan.
      Obviously in an ideal world I'd get it all but eh, I already have other stuff to play and I don't think I'd be hurting for variety with this selection
      EDIT:
      Ordered a bunch of stuff - some of it is a pre-order for the new stuff but:
      Coming in the next few days:
      - Opener and WindWalker
      - Azathoth
      - Cosmic Terrors (Found this really cheap oddly?)
      Coming in a couple of months (pre-order):
      - Ult. Errata Pack (just to make sure none of it is old stuff)
      - Bubastis and Daemon
      - Ramsey Campbell Horrors 1 and 2
      - GOO Pk 2
      - Master Rulebook
      ---
      Can't find High Priests anywhere local currently so will try to proxy them for now. Also I did want a map at some point but I'll reconsider that at a later date. Thanks for the advice

      There are quite a few really fun combinations right now. I think that is why I enjoy just basic earth map with add-ons so much. I am still thinking primeval map is my favorite add-on map though, really like the Ice Age tokens.

  • @schnaxlwirt

    would you suggest getting Azathoth? or rather one of those neutral monster boxes?

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on if you have any extra factions. If you have a few already, then Azathoth adds some really unique mechanics, if you do not have any extra factions get neutrals for much more variety. Although first thing I suggest if all you have is the base box, get some factions before anything.

    Hey! Hopefully I get a response! Right now I’m in the pledge manager and ordered all the stuff to recommended in the video, want to add a extra map, but I really don’t know wish one!! My play group is of 4 players mostly, I have read a lot of Primeval, Shanghai and Dreamlands maps are the best ones. Any help here? Thanks!

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are playing 4 players and have no other maps, I recommend Library with Primeval as a really super close second. Primeval is a "better" map but library adds more twists that really shine in 4 and 5 player games.
      Primeval is great for forcing interaction Library adds in interesting mechanics.
      I would urge Library if only one but if you can get both nab Library and Primeval.
      I am not sold on Shaggai yet and want more plays before I give final verdict.

    Recently played my first game and really enjoy the game. I got the first edition along with windwalker and azazoth expansions.
    I would LOVE to get all these expansions you recomended but kickstarter and patersongames webstore delivery charges really put me off. Factions, updating my first edition and maps drive the price into the 300 (for bare minimums) and 500 area (almost all the goodies) that really makes me question if its worth it as I could get two or three other cool kickstarters for that price.
    Unless It becomes available in Spain or ebay for the same store price but better shipping I will give expanding the Game a pass.
    Great video I found it very informative!

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The great thing about the game is since there is really such a large amount of content you really don't need to buy it all at once. I would actually suggest against that route. Get an expansion see how your group reacts to it, play the heck out of it, then see what your group would like to add next. One or 2 expansions alone really add a great amount of replay variety without breaking the bank.

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the interesting thing about the game each faction is overpowered in one way and has a crucial weakness. It is a very well balanced asymmetric game!

    • @jackakhan
      @jackakhan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree with previous reply. ALL of the factions are perfectly viable. Some are just a little more straightforward, a little more obvious what u need to do to succeed with them. Yes, WW is a great faction with some great abilities. All of them can be countered though, same as with everybody else.

    • @Kirahie
      @Kirahie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Windwalker gets stronger the longer the game goes. However you can hobble them early with harassment and denying them early spell books. "The later they come into power the better"

    • @OffTheShelfGameReviews
      @OffTheShelfGameReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kirahie Best part of the game is how each faction plays differently with strengths and weaknesses. The skill in the game is realizing which factions dominate which stages of the game and get ready to counteract that so you can win, unless you are Opener, then just screw with everyone all the time, so you win alone.

    • @Kirahie
      @Kirahie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OffTheShelfGameReviews :Thinking: But that's why you play Opener. You have a lot of fun even if you lose because you get to screw everyone equally.
