      Are you a producer or film maker, and is this extraordinary creation yours? I'd love to see a track plan diagram if available. I'm a Woodstock generation multi-media guy who's grampa assembled a gigantic Lionel layout in my mom's basement, and was always blowing out tunnels in walls, sending it into various parts of the storeroom until finally she threatened; "Daddy, you've taken all my storage, now we're going to have to move" --- A few years later, this unfortunately came true, but for other reasons, and the whole 800 square feet of multi level tables were left behind. Grampa kept most of the rolling stock---and by the late 1970s his old age hit, and fortunately the collector$ market had boomed---it all ended fine. Such is life, but I have forever missed those trains in the basement. TH-cam and folks like you brighten by daze. Nice "meeting" you.

      @@johngoldstein2754 - HI, thanks for the awesome praise and comment! I regret not giving you a proper response before... I somehow did not see your whole comment on my phone at the time. That's a great and relatable story you shared and I am glad, at least, it ended well. :) Nice to "meet" you too.
      Things have changed a lot for me since this video went up. I "was" a producer/filmmaker, but have left the business (so to speak). Maybe one day in the future I'll go at it again, but I have no interest in it all at this time. This set up does not belong to me, but to a relative. Amazing video! Takes me back to when I was 6 watching TM's "I Love Toy Trains". It was that show and Tom McComas' other videos that got me hooked on toy trains. Now nearly 20 years later I have been collecting various Lionel, MTH, Marx, Flyer and K-line trains like crazy. I really want to make videos like this and TM's of my toy trains.

      @@ddotcdot6892 Thank you for the motivation. Once I get my basement done, I'm going full speed ahead with the layout rebuild. Once that's done, lights, camera, and train action. I'm wanting to make a 30-45 minute production called, "The Amazing World of Toy Trains" with a target audience for children, families, and train fanatics. I'd like to unveil the finished product at film festivals for children and family films. I hope it can jumpstart my dream career to become a filmmaker.

    Great video. The music and videography reminds me of an old MTH product VHS from the late 90's that I used to watch over and over as a kid. Even though I havent seen it in almost 20 years this video caused me to immediately remember it and brought me back to when I was a kid. I think I'll go run my trains now. Thanks for the memories and the nostalgia.

    • @ddotcdot6892

      Very possible the same, if not similar stock music might have been used...It is of that time and considering the likely-tight pool of available stock music that would have been around back then, pre-internet, this would make sense, though I cannot say I remember or have seen the product video you are referring to and haven't used VHS in quite a number of years. Going back 20-some years, I did watch many train videos as a kid - but not many of them stuck with me. I do remember first discovering this piece in the There Goes A Train and There goes a Police Car, etc. video series by Dave Hood from the early-mid 90s and it stayed with me for years, I just had no idea who made the track, but it always made me think of trains and vehicular motion. It took a very very long time for me to track down who made the music and where you could find it. TH-cam's match system actually helped confirm. It's a stock track from a company called GMP music. Anyone can purchase it on their website. As for the videography, we spent months trying to find the most effective way to shoot this particular model railroad in the tight space that it exists in and eventually settled on a mix of techniques to really showcase this layout in its entirety, despite the lack of room. Glad it managed to bring back some fond memories for you and thanks for the kind words!

    Great video, I love all the close-up shots! I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't mention that the music... um.... sounds like great instrumental music from 1985. If retro is what you were going for, fine - but if not, I'd go back to PremiumBeat and see if there isn't something a bit more current sounding. The energy is good, but it does sound dated.

    • @ddotcdot6892
      @ddotcdot6892  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment and praise. All I will say is - the right tone and the right marriage between picture, sound, and music far exceed any concern over time period as far as I am concerned. I didn't just want to use another stock track that would enable the viewer to passively gaze at the photography and then forget it all when they clicked on the next TH-cam video about kittens, or whathaveyou, which just so happened to use the same premiumbeat track from last year as this. This needed something that worked alongside it, stays in your mind after, and takes you back in time - just like trains do. Those of us who model or used to model railroad know how exciting it all is, but there are many people of today's generation who could love trains, and just unfortunately don't know about them and haven't had the right exposure. There isn't a single piece of music made today that would make me feel the nostalgic excitement of trains in motion... Unless, we're talking country, but I didn't want country. That's why I went with Gene Ort's genius instrumentation.

      Thank you! It can be a great deal of fun (and a money-hole if you like new stuff lol) whether you're into the trains or miniature model building and artwork, or electrical. It's a tinkerers paradise.
      Yours is a cool hobby too. What would you say if I told you I have been wanting to get a Roland D-50 for the longest time? Would you sway me from it in favor of something else? Always wanted to have a good all around synthesizer with some vintage and modern sounds, and piano, just to be able to jot music ideas down - without pencil and paper (I can't read or write music, but I I follow my ear and I do like to play a bit of piano.)

    • @BillVincent
      @BillVincent 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh, great! Another synth fan! I would say that although a D-50 can still be found, I would look at something more current like a VR-09, which has a lot of classic sounds and new sounds too - and it's new for under 1K. I also have a fairly new Yamaha MOXF6 that fills the bill too. Both are great keyboards. Have fun!

Let's see how the video does. Keep sharing it, and if the view count exceeds 200k views, then I will be happy to share the behind the scenes secrets including what equipment we used, what went into the editing, and what our whole process was. I was 8 years old when I tried to win that train set at the local bakery in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Seems like just a few years ago, now I'm 50 looking back at how I wasted my life with one eye and with the other I'm looking at the sliding banana peel under my foot down in my grave. Funny how what we value as we age changes, I'd give anything near about to go back and redo my life. I'm sure most feel the same way. Precious life vs toys. Life....

It comes up under suggested stock music in their library for machines, motors, vehicles, motion, trains, etc. ...I got lucky. It fit the bill here perfectly. Did a little remixing of it and it’s tailored perfectly for this video.

Worst thing about your picture is that the tender is facing the wrong way against the steam engine. The toy company that made those trains and created the picture is clearly not run by anyone who actually knows something about trains.

      For trains like these you can get them second hand for a bargain these days - you just have to know where to look and be prepared to know how to maintain them to keep costs down. Notice these are all mostly 1990s models, but they look just like the ones made today - which can run thousands (I can't afford those.). Just gotta keep 'em in good shape, no matter what age and they'll impress.

      @@ddotcdot6892 Neat! I did that too but there was a lot of white noise in several samples. Do you know how to fix that?

    • @ddotcdot6892
      @ddotcdot6892  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Eli_Santin - use NLE software *Adobe Premier or Audition or something equivalent and throw on a low pass filter in the treble range somewhere between 8k-12khz. Throw on a high pass as well if you’re also getting subsonic rumble. (Anything below 40hz is typically useless in most cases anyway, so it’s a good rule of thumb to just eliminate the sub-bottom floor altogether.)
      If that still isn’t enough - try a 3 (or more) band effects EQ with EQ sweep in the mid and high range. Adjust as needed.
      Try all of these conventional “analog” methods before moving on to noise cancelling filters. Try to avoid them if possible. Noise filters typically ruin the original audio by the time they have removed enough noise to make a difference... That said, it’s been 3 years since I’ve fooled with any of it. Maybe some of the new software has come a long way in that department and actually works now.
      You’ll have to play around and see what makes for the best results. Don’t forget to save..save..save.

    • @Eli_Santin
      @Eli_Santin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ddotcdot6892 Thank you! I'm assuming you had to deal with the white noise problem too. I find it curious how the locomotives filter that out. My brother and I had to essentially reverse-engineer the sound system to grab individual samples.

    • @ddotcdot6892
      @ddotcdot6892  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Eli_Santin - whoa! That’s dedication, but it really can be done in a much simpler way than that. The easiest way to capture what the chip puts out is to take the leads to the speaker and wire them to a 1/8 headphone jack straight into a Zoom recorder (or equivalent). Record at least 48kHz/16-bit or higher sample rate, turn the volume on PS1 way down so you’re putting out “signal” levels and simply play them back with the engine on a test track or floating with jumpers and run it off a transformer like normal. This was how it had to be done because taking a board out of a good engine was not an option at the time - it had to be able to go right back to filming duties.
      As for the noise, and clean up, all of that was done in Adobe Premier once the audio was on the timeline.
      One of the reasons you don’t hear the noise much straight off the engine is because the speakers used in them are terrible and are incapable of the high and low range where hiss and noise and rumble would normally exist. Their speakers are equivalent to midrange drivers used commonly in bookshelf 3-way speaker systems.
