    I honestly think the coachmen story was about crossing into the after life and seeing if you had made me peace or not with the people with your lives along thinking about your actions, and by the end of it I think it’s metaphorical for them “going to hell” because they truly weren’t good people.

    • @ChuckMothaEfenNorris
      @ChuckMothaEfenNorris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The people were dead and were heading towards the light not hell. It's implied by showing the staircase with a white light emanating from the top. When the woman was having a panic attack the French man tried to stop the wagon but was told that it wouldn't be possible. Once dead there is no stopping it or going back.

    • @SuperThomac
      @SuperThomac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      How do you know it's hell ? I believe we don't really know what it is. Could be hell, could be purgatory, could be the void nobodies know. But that doesn't change the fact that they have to go through it. Even without meaning, without certitude, we have to go through life and eventually death, for me that's somehow the point of this story.

    • @RedFloyd469
      @RedFloyd469 ปีที่แล้ว

      It reminds me quite a lot of "L'enfer, c'est les autres", an often misquoted and misinterpreted play by Sartre.
      The play is about a bunch of people stuck in the same room, who get to know one another and discover that every single one of them is a vile person. They realize that they are all in fact dead and stuck with each other in a sort of hell. The trick is that each one of these people was convinced that they were actually morally good people until the others show to them just how their actions appear to others.
      It's sartre's way of telling us that hell isn't real in the biblical sense, but that true hell, as punishment for moral misdeeds, comes in the form of other people's judgements, which we need in order to form any sort of criticism towards ourselves. "Hell is other people" is therefore not a cynical or pessimistic display of misanthropy, it's a metaphorical statement with a literal interpretation and a moral call for self-reflection and a philosophical view on the nature of good and evil.
      In any case, that the stagecoach was just the ride towards the afterlife, or just death, is pretty obvious. It's barely even a metaphor. What's interesting is the conversations these people have, and the fact we don't get to see how things play out in the hotel. There is no reason to assume the hotel is hell, any more than there is to assume it is heaven or purgatory. It is whatever these people have got coming to them, one way or the other.

      The bride-to be? Now THAT was particularly sad because of the hope constantly dangled in front of the characters. The cool trick where he faked his death to get a lethal surprise attack on the native would have been an awesome ending to an action movie, but the reality sets in when you see she took her own life, following the man's advice. The Coen Brothers (Ethan and Joel) have a way of taking something ordinary and making it powerful somehow. Choice of dialog, expert camera work, perspective, lighting ... everything is so tight. Yes, most of these stories are macabre or bizarre, but that is part of the entertainment and charm. The full-length film is worth watching. I also believe that individual stories would make great discussion topics for high school or college sociology courses.

      @@paulhinsky this is a part 2 cuz i did a quick research Christianity does not have one per say but the role of the ferrymen, guiding the deceased spirit to the underworld is most common in the form of a angel or jesus coming to get the person at their death or even next of kin waiting for them. Christian probably had a more concrete version of this before hell and the devil were invented. For early christians many would have believed Christ the god would guide them into accending past the Mortal realm.fun fact : Early christian text which were sealed since their writing suggest that Christ is a god who processed Jesus and or Jesus being one of his form. But there were not holy Trinity. Old testament YHWH and Christ were 2 different beings. Christ who came to teach us how to accending past this mortal and imperfections realm of torture created by a bastard god. In it is believe that for them hell was being on earth and they had to reach enlightenment trough meditation. Christ would welcome them amongst the realm of what we call gods. It is unclear how many different branches there were but their existence and eradication was told about in some text from the branch of what became the roman Catholic church. Imo, I think it represent on how people come and leave in our life despite all the things that we had been through with him or her. You never know when it will be the last time you see him or her, as you can see in the movie, the limbless man continue to do his best performance even though his owner don't really care of him like how they didn't even talk with each other because the main purpose was only to make money until one day his owner abandon him or you could say kill him over a chicken which he assume that it will bring him more money. Clearly, the owner can't focus on two thing at the same time so he pick either one, but instead fighting for his life, the performer accept his fate. This scene I think it try to tell us that we can't force people to stay in our life, if they want to leave then they will leave, there's no point forcing them to stay.

      @@maxwelljohn8241 I see it more that death is an inevitable occurrence. We are limbless and immobile to death. The best you can do is say your piece to whoever will listen. When death comes for you, it *will* come for you.
      An alternative interpretation, though it strays from the movie's clear theme of dwath, is how it shows the exploitation of differences. The handler doesn't help the limbless man out of love, he exploits the handicapped guy. When the freak has no use he's abandoned entirely.

      @Fa Mulan Well, that could also be it. It could be that the owner has been living in that way since long time which is making money, until the fact that he forgot what it is like to have a companion or friendship. It can be seen on how the owner treat the limbless man which also portrayed that the owner only see the limbless man as a money maker.
