Trying many amps hasn't quenched my dream of experiencing Univox. They're nearly impossible to find in France or Europe. I recently had a lot of fun with a Univox PHZ-1 phase shifter (relabelled BST LM-200 in France). If you'd like to give it a shot, my experimentations are on my channel.
Nice playing, and I agree old univox stuff is really good. I also wish I knew more about it, but for whatever reason the background info isn't there on the internet. What I do know is that univox was an American company that manufactured under their own name but also jobbed out a lot to electronics retailers and was sold under brands like Lafayette and Realistic. The earlier 60's amps were US made with point to point construction where as the higher watt 70's tube amp and heads with pcb boards were made in Japan. They all benefit from having those Atlas oil caps replaced. My first amp I had as a teenager was a big Realistic combo tube amp made by Univox that a guy I worked with sold me when I started playing guitar. I ended up making it into a custom head unit and putting the Jensen speakers into a closed 2x12 cabinet. I've held on to both for the 30 years since and picked up some other univox gear along the way. Maybe someday people will realize what an awesome deal this stuff is and start digging up specs and history, but that would also drive up prices.
In my early years, I had a Univox Guitar Amp U-1226. Now that it’s 50+ years old and I beat that by 16 years I decided to make a revisit. That being said now I repair, mod and working on a complete rebuild with more of today’s features that were not available years ago. I wish I never sold my fender 1963 precision base together they were fantastic.
I'm using a Cascade Fathead ribbon mic into a Black Lion preamp on the amps. The bass was recorded direct into Cubase using an amp modeling plug-in emulating an SVT (I think).
Sounds reallly awesome. I would love to find one of these amps someday.
