Wonderful words of wisdom. My consistency comes from going back to watch your fabulous 5 minute freed maker videos. If I am on a plateau, those videos get me back track and on my way.....I love to make reeds; all due to you!!!!!

I used to play oboe, sort of. As a saxophonist/doubler, I played it briefly many decades ago, but I no longer do. I watch your videos because I find your advice and general approach to music making to be very thoughtful.
Regarding reed consistency, many saxophonists complain that reeds out of the box don’t all play the same. This has driven many part time musicians to adopt synthetic reeds. I have been pointing out for years that cane is organic, and I don’t care how precise your reed machines are (and they are MUCH better than they wer 30 years ago), no two reeds will be exactly the same. To say nothing of the musicians themselves - a little too much coffee, lack of sleep, argument with a family member - all these things affect us, every day we are different
“I just paid $5 for a reed, it should work perfectly - and just like every other reeed in the box!” This is a symptom of the entitlement disease that pervades our culture. Your reedmaker colleagues are, I’m sure, hearing comments like this from people that expect organic materials to be like electronics - every one exactly the same. Thank you for speaking the truth so clearly!

Hello, I have been watching your channel for the last few years. I was a music major in Oboe performance over a decade ago. I work outside of the music industry now but I still play for fun, and still love everything about the oboe! I still make my own reeds and have become very efficient in the skill (90% of my reeds become playable with good projection and intonation). I still have issues that are common to me, and have been since university. My main issues are my window to heart transition is always "chunky", or unsmooth... I've tried to turn the reed upside down and scrape to get rid of the harsh lines, but it never fully works or becomes smooth. Also I have an issue with reeds being perfect the first few days of play and then becoming sharp. Do you have any tips or tricks for me? Thanks for your videos!

I love this. You've become fantastically consistent at creating the same "problems" over and over again - which is great because it's easy to experiment from a basis of consistency. If you have two or three reeds with the same concern, you can keep one as a control and GO TO TOWN on the others.
I will say that I personally don't care anything about that window-to-heart transition. As long as the rails aren't damaged, it can be as ugly and chunky as it wants and I find that the reeds are still fine. So - is it a problem? Your experiments can tell you.
When your reeds get sharp, what do you do? Is it possible to refresh the transition and pet the kitty and clip and bring it back to baseline? Because playing on the reed changes it, and it's not unreasonable to have to revisit after a few days of breaking in...
I love this kind of problem solving! Feel free to hit me up for a Reed Repair Shop session if you'd like - but it sounds like you are doing great!

@@JennetIngle "Reedmaker" is in the title of your video, and my name is Reed. Obv, you're talking about musical reeds, not people named Reed, but it just a silly lil joke 🙂
