I'm really loving this series because it shows us just how smart Jack Napier is. In this story he's actually doing damage to Batman in a way Joker never could. Joker, for all his intelligence, always makes the mistake of going after Batman as a person because he can't see past their twisted relationship. Meanwhile, Jack is tearing down the real source of Batman's strength; the very people he's fighting for. By taking that trust away, he's taking away Batman's very reason to fight crime, and when you that away from Batman, all that's left is a violent sociopath with an arsenal of weapons at his disposal. The Joker can't beat Batman. He may claim to be an agent of chaos, but the truth is that at the end of the day if he doesn't find a way to return things to the status quo he ceases to exist. Jack Napier, however, could actually defeat Batman in a way that means something. As a symbol of hope, Batman is indestructible. You take that away from him, he's just a man.
So. . . . --Jack is sane for the time being but aware of the Joker's "presence" or identity inside of him. --Harleen Quinzel (OG Harley, the doctor) knows the meds work, but has forgotten so much about how the DSM in her world works, that she fails to understand that "dysthymia" as sub-clinical depression, is most likely overwhelmed by the more severe circumstance of having two personality disorders (schizoid and narcissistic) going on at once in Jack. --. . . and also doesn't see the Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) right in front of her, hers or Jack's. --In the meantime there's two "Harley Quinns" per se, the OG former Psychiatrist (blonde) and the Criminally Insane Nympho (white-haired). We don't know who White Hair Harley is, or who she works for. Blondie is Jack's Girl. --Alfred dies from his medical problem saving Bruce from being torn up. . . by a collapsing building. That's stretching it a bit much, Alfred couldn't possibly have THAT much prep-time from his death-bed, but okay. :) --The Robins are all out of order here, and in particular, Jason Todd's being "in before Grayson" is. . . significant, as this both says something about this setting's Dick Grayson (he's not as old or sharp as he should be, given that Alfred's gone) and this setting's Bruce Wayne (he's tolerated Jason's ruthlessness and mean streak for LONGER than usual, and yes, Jason was a bastard well before there was any Lazarus Pit nonsense to consider). And we also know that in-setting, Batman's likely being played by the other Old Money of Gotham--being used as a gatekeeper, natural disaster, source of entertainment, recycler of last resort. But who is keeping that information from Bruce, since it is info about his own peers, or at least the peers of his family? Alfred wouldn't have turned a blind eye forever, but that may have explained his sudden mortality (his being on his death-bed suddenly, "for reasons"). So who else would have manipluated Bruce? In one of the panels shown but not explained we see a Batgirl panicked at the thought of Alfred "not controlling Bruce" anymore. Redhead Batgirl has always been Barbara Gordon previously, daughter of Commissioner Gordon at the GCPD. Hmm. Do we know who Jason Todd's family was, in this setting? Do we know who else might have Jack's combination of latent or not-so-latent narcissism, and either schizoid, schizotypal or antisocial personality? And who is enabling White Hair Harley to find the Hatter and what's left of Clayface? This gives me a sneaking suspicion that this is a "The Batman's the real threat/crazy one" type of story, and that this involves a hidden "Bat-Family inside the Bat-Family" as well. That Batgirl and maybe Jason Todd, with or without Alfred, were less about helping Batman and more about _containing him and keeping him clueless_. But then who does White Hair Harley answer to? Gordon? Jason Todd? Someone else among the corrupt and exploitative of Gotham? **lol** Okay, maybe I'm being snarky without realizing it, sorry. Truth is, someone's read one too many fanfics where Jason Todd stayed the insane Red Hood and/or became the Third Joker. And/or, maybe they've read too much Brad Metzler--not just _Identity Crisis,_ but his mystery novels too.
All these people talking about how the story doesn't make sense because "good guy joker" but nobody wants to admit that the corruption thats shown is a very realistic thing. If you don't think people are profiting off crime and the suffering of others...
