My parents just bought a 55" HDTV and I was setting it up; I quickly noticed when I set the resolution to 1080i; any and all motion seemed interlaced with each other and blurred together; it would also seem to glitch often. I used to think that 1080i was better than all other resolutions but really, you don't get to see 1080i's real effects until you get a large screen (I used to play games on my PS3 at a 1080i but I never noticed it with my 22" HDTV). You won't really notice anything until you view different resolutions in screens larger than 40"+. The way I see it: the good resolutions are: 1080p, to 720p, then, 1080i-->with 480p and 240p following behind. I don't even know why people have a 140p. :3

Progressive scan resolutions are better at moving pictures above 30Hz and in this case, for most screen sizes and how far away you sit, 720p is the better option as its pixel density is a lot closer than 1M pixels away from 1080i.

Comparing a non-deinterlaced 1080i to a 720p on a computer monitor is pretty useless... of course 720p looks better, because a computer monitor displays full frames only. Do this test on a TV monitor that can handle both interlaced and progressive content and you will barely see a difference (depending on the TV monitor).
You gotta enable 1080p on the youtube and go full screen to see how 1080i affects the video. When it comes to motion, you can see 'cuts' in the picture.

Interlaced videos always have what I call "The Shinies". There's parts of the video that looks shiny from all the artifacts and missing lines during quick motion. It's a telltale sign of poor quality video, or at least that it's an interlaced signal.

i have been looking into this alot lately, just wanted to ask you as it looks to me as you already have!.. 1080i you basically never have a full image on the screen. could this be the reason of response rate between a 50hz tv and ps3 being noticeably bad. this is the only reason i haven't upgraded my tv in a long time, as i have used the model up tv as mine, but a 3D version and the delay was terrible.

720p definitely !!! Just pause the video around 1:35 and you'll see all the interlaced lines... TV manufacturers and cable companies are pushing 1080i content as 'better', what a scam! I won't even mention the 4K pushed in Laptop computers, to be seen at 1m max... One other factor is that most cable companies don't even use 720p but 1366x768p, which gives 1,049,088 pixels in progressive scan, way better than the 1,036,800 pixels of 1080i (every 60th of a second)

You can't see the artifacts on a PC. Also video games will seem quicker because it's fake 60fps. Interlaced reduces bandwidth, that's why video games get quicker. Same experience as using 120hz.
