    Wow... I would have loved that game when I was a kid. Back in 1993, I was balls deep with Doom 2 so I may have completely missed gem like that. Graphics are amazing. It has 4 or 5 layers of parallax scrolling and not to mention smooth level scroll or sprite scaling. You can definitely tell the programmer put alot of talent and love into this.

    Wow 89.95 DM, that was't cheap stuff back then.

    • @supergoose.
      @supergoose. 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only 20DM more than some of my first Game Boy games. Duck Tales, Tiny Toon Adventures and Mario 2 were 69,95DM each. My Ocarina of Time cost me almost 200DM. Try to dig up some MARO ads and look at the prices for NEO GEO carts, if you dare.

    • @caolila123
      @caolila123 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Byron No the price for new released third party games was like up to 169,95 DM, generally it was like 149,95 DM. I can't remember exactly how it was for Ocarina, I got it for my birthday or christmas, but if I remember correctly it was a "big boxed" version including the walkthrough so it might have been 169,95 DM too.
      A lot of first party titles were released for 129,95 DM if I remember correctly, so I don't know where that puts Zelda.

    • @supergoose.
      @supergoose. 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Byron Zelda was one of the more expensive games but those 200DM included the cost of a guide book.

    • @Sampler19
      @Sampler19 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      PumpkinStrikesBack But you could get most of the new Amiga games for roundabout 59 DM, if you had a look at the different mailorder ads in Magazines. I think i even got my preorders of Turrican III and Lionheart für 48 DM. PC and console games where way more expensive in the early to mid nineties...i always wondered how some guys in school could afford all those new Super Nintendo Cartridges for 120 - 180 DM.

    I noticed Prime Target behind you! A game I had the demo for when I was younger, and played a lot. I've looked for it, but it appears it was only on Mac, and I dont think I ever found it anyway (3rd demo level, subway/sewer with punk junkies with shotguns used to scare the hell out of me). Damage Incorporated was another great Marathon/Doom engine FPS that CD had the demo for. Any chance you'd ever take a closer look at either of those?

    Yeah, Core design made a series of great amiga and mega drive games. Chuck Rock II was one of them, I love the Amiga CD32 version, and the Amiga 500 version is the one I spent more time with. The Mega Drive version is pretty neat as well, I would call it a tie. The first Chuck Rock though was better on the MD, apart from the censored dinosaur pooping thing that is.

    Having tried them both I actually prefer the Sega CD version for its superior audio quality. In particular when played on my current emulation setup where I have it hooked up to a 5.1 surround sound system. The tracks on the CD version sound quite nice pumped over virtual surround sound. Back in the 90's I also had surround sound and I would have killed to have this kind of audio quality from my games. I was stuck on SNES though.

    I only first heard about this in your Sega CD video (I'm too young to have been around then and only got into retro games/computers recently), and ever since then, I've wondered:
    Is this in any way related to Bonk on the TG16? I mean they were both out around the same time, and both of them are platformers about a stone-age baby. That can't be a coincidence.

    Core Design were one of the best and most undersung developers of all time and that's just for all their Tomb Raiders and Project Eden, everything else they did is a nice bonus.
    It's a shame they were so crucified after AoD, it wasn't a terrible game by any means just a victim of raised expectations.
    They at least understood what makes a great Tomb Raider game, something that Crystal Dynamics for all their efforts have never quite managed to match, good though their iterations have been.

    I believe the term you are looking for is "pillow-shading". It's a fun technique, but in (pixel) art it's usually used as a bit of a derogatory term.
    Like many other commenters I prefer the Amiga version of the game, as sometimes the Genesis colors just hurt my soul: )

    • @thewiirocks
      @thewiirocks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      darkfalzx Darn it, you beat me to it. Donut Games is also huge on using pillow shading, which does turn a lot of people off. Personally I'm fine with it as long as it's not overused/abused. It does have a very unique look and can be a legitimate art direction.
      It turns into something negative when it signifies a lack of artistic skill. i.e. The artist learned this one shading technique (which I understand is quite easy to learn) and is basically spamming it because they don't know anything else.

    • @darkfalzx
      @darkfalzx 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thewiirocks While Chuck Rock is actually a wonderful game of its time, some of its art does stray into noob-esque territories. Just look at that character "portrait" at 1:04 - it's terrifying!
      My earliest VGA pixel art was super-pillowy, which corroborates the "easy to learn" theory. Another noobish pixel technique is excessive dithering - something I abused back then as well.
      ..I'm pretty sure I got better since: )
