Rita that was beautiful. Thank you I will somehow bookmark this.. Here is my comment. So I am a circus street performer and one day I am making shows in the South Street Seaport and I have finished doing shows for the day and am getting ready to do a short set where I accompany a very good singer with the piano accordion and the tenor banjo. While she is getting ready to play I give an Irish tune a go on my at the time Weltmeister red piano accordion. Soon a woman comes over and requests something Irish. So I play a very untrained version of Farewell to Ireland. She burst out laughing. Saying it was terrible and I should stop playing. Then she asked me what the other instrument in the case was and I replied it is a tenor banjo. She then came back with oh double loser. Because the accordion and the banjo are looked down upon in Irish sessions. Now. It turns out that the woman.who said these awful things to me is a prominent figure in the Irish music community. Here is a hint, she plays a metal flute. Like in a football band. Anyway there is more that relates to this video. Also on this same spot at the South Street Seaport was a homeless man from Ireland. He loved my show and Everytime I would throw him a few bucks because I liked him. He was real. To the point. He told me that I was sadly never going to be able to play the Irish tunes accurately. Because I do not speak Gaelic, and that all of the tunes I am trying to play are actually Gaelic stories and the notes are words that I do not speak. This is constructive criticism. Not what the other lady said to me. So thank you Rita Galligher for putting the words to the tune. It is in fact what I was looking for, I need to play this song. Also a shout out to Tony MacMahon for bringing this to me.
There are greater than thow musicians, in every genre. I'm assuming you are somewhere other than Ireland. Well, let me tell you, you are more likely to find nothing but encouragement. Someone who tells you to quit, would actually be looked down on there. Listen less to those sad sacks and more to the positives and constructive criticisms. Look for a local chapter of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for classes with local teachers or try this link out. These are Irish Musicians, in Ireland teaching these courses online. The fee is do-able and I think you will enjoy it. Good luck! www.oaim.ie/piano-accordion/piano-accordion-basics/
