All my years of playing football and madden, i always wanted to understand a lot more than I did. Out of all the videos ive watched, articles breaking down formations and concepts, this is by far the most explanatory one ive ever watched. good work
LMAO. Every “Basics video,” skips the basics. Video: “Here’s the 3-4 defence.” Me: Okay, it’s named that because there are 4 players on the line and 3 behind them. Makes sense. Video: “Here’s the 4-3 defence…” Me: okay, I think I know where this is going…. Video:….. Me: 😢 Nope.
Most fans don’t lol. A lot know the rules & the positions, but they can’t break down any plays. Once you get a grip on this stuff, you’ll know more than 75-80 % of fans
I played football and always considered myself a savvy football guy- but this video humbled me along with many “ah hah” moments. Great informational video!!
I had to watch it on 0.75 speed, and a lot of it still went over my head! So much valuable information though, so it's worth it. Loved the animations and attention to detail. Thank you for continuing to put out such high-quality content.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for for about the last 20 years. I played in high school so I know how the game works but I only know offensive line. Even with that, I’d like to know how the advanced players read things.
@@getsomebud wtf that makes no sense. just because a guy is in the beginning of his learning curve, it doesn't mean the ceiling of his knowledge is low. it's been a year since he commented and I bet my house he knows more ball than you.
Hey, I would just like to give you guys a huge thank you to you guys. I'm a High Schooler and I've been interested in football for some time but don't know anything about it, and so I'm going to trails soon to play for a league team. The work you guys have done has really helped me understand the terminology of football, and now I can go play without confusion.
Helpful hint: 2:53 mark - either the Y or Z, must cover the tackle on the line of scrimmage. Otherwise it's a penalty for illegal formation. The tackles must always be covered. Great video! 👍
Could you explain what you mean by “cover” the tackle? Do you mean simply nearby or actually on the line of scrimmage? Of course, you did write “on the line of scrimmage” but I’m a little confused by the image which shows Y as a little back from scrimmage but close to the tackle.
@@fang_shi_tong Great question. You are correct. The Y needs to be up on the line of scrimmage and aligned the same as the tackle. Then the formation would be legal. You could also design the play so that the receiver on the right side is up on the line of scrimmage, then the Y can stay where he is in the video. Hope this explanation helps answer your question. Have a great day!
Honestly this was the perfect video for me. I was quite familiar with the WR/DB stuff but everything else I've only heard of at best and kinda kinda. This really solidified my foundations there
Very well done. This isn’t hard to remember if you watch a few times & understand the game. If you can memorize & comprehend most of this, you’ll know more than 95 % of fans
I liked these explanations. I love football and enjoy learning as much about the game as I can. I will be reviewing this video repeatedly. Thanks for sharing.
I loved this vid. thank you for actually explaining that when I was on my couch screaming “THE LINEBACKERS AND CB ARE SO CLOSE TO THE LINE, PLEASE FADE OUTSIDE BRO”, I was actually reading cover 2 defense 😭
James, you do a great job simplifying this. SO MUCH that it's my personal go-to Playlist I created to send people who need to learn how to watch football lol My Suggestion (if you don't mind): Can YOU put together a Playlist here's on TH-cam that lists all the videos little NEED to watch to understand it all? I would WAY rather serve them links to YOUR American Football 101 Playlists. Thanks man. You RAWK
Thanks for the vid, it helps understanding football easy. May u make it better by add a short vid clip of the player actually performing the plays, in slowmo or highlight the main play action?
Dude… I played D3 college football and even I learned some stuff here. As a player, you really don’t understand the bigger picture like this. You just know your individual assignment.
@@imgabnunswifties don’t even know the rules of the game, they’ve never been around any athlete ever too Most non player fans/journalists don’t understand plays and schemes and all this either.
Not a bad video. Very basic in its explanation. I would definitely emphasize the terminology from formations, play calls, route concepts, GAPs and techs is extremely nuanced and varies from team to team, but if your a beginner looking to know more about football this video can give you a starting point.
I need a video that explains intermediate terms, like I understand the basic concepts of the game well. But there’s some terminology that I need to know before I can understand the usage of the plays. Like “Red Zone” “Inside/Outside the box”
As a casual fan... This is great for more sophisticated fans but was wondering if their was a video where their was'nt too much info and you could just watch the game to make it more enjoyable.
Video makes it sound like 4-3 and Base Defence are diffrent but they look the same. Is that true? Or is base either 4-3 or 3-4 depending on what your running and chances to nickle if you add a nickleback to either?
Cover 6 is cover 4 to the field side, The far side of the field, And cover 2 To the boundary side, The closest side of the field. It's also known as quarter quarter half coverage. To the field side you will have two deep defenders, as 1/4 defenders, meaning they're covering their half of thst side. While on the boundary side, you only have 1 deep defender, And he is covering that whole half of the field himself. Underneath you have four coverage players. On the boundary side, The side with the deep half defender, has A corner underneath him, that corners job is to carry the receiver he is covering up to the deep half, And then go back down to the flat, just like normal cover 2. Also on that side of the field you have a hook/curl defender. On the field side, the outside corner drops a deep quarter zone because he is one of the deep defenders. So your two defenders on that side are in charge of covering the hole zone, And the other the hook curl and flat zone. Hope this helped
This is way too advanced for me. What's a wide receiver? a tight end? This is not basic at all. Even the diagrams are confusing, are you showing offense or defense and if offense, is it going toward the top of the diagram or the bottom?
Swifties don’t even know how to read box scores and game rules much less formations and plays I guarantee you most non player fans don’t know much either

Great video clear and concise explanation of the basic concept leaving the bells ,whistles ,tags ect to me the way a concept should be explained.
Good stuff. As a fan who never played I love the game and understand a lot of it but not on this level. Very interesting and informative.
Thank you so much for including all the book recommendations, websites, podcasts, etc. So is the Z receiver the slot receiver?

Your "Sail Concept" is usually referred to as the "Flood Concept." However, it is run with a TE1/Y running the route you have your RB running.

IF both OT's or Offensive Tackles. Are not covered up. That is automatically an Illegal Formation penalty.
So a 4-3 and a base defense isn’t the same thing ?
had to lock in for qb
this is good stuff

What about the Bang, Bend & Bouce concepts? In the running game...
So, would a block with the Center and Right Guard also be an Ace block?
Would a block with the left guard and right tackle also be a Deuce block?

How many offensive players need to be on the line of scrimmage? And what makes motion a penalty? Also the difference between a base defense and a 4-3?
7 need to be on the line. Typically the 5 lineman, they must be 'covered' on each end by TE and/or WR. All other receivers need to be off the line.
This is way too advanced for me. What's a wide receiver? a tight end? This is not basic at all. Even the diagrams are confusing, are you showing offense or defense and if offense, is it going toward the top of the diagram or the bottom?
Bro doesn’t know what a receiver is💀💀💀 ur stupid as hell
This was a nice list of terms, but would be much better if you grouped them into some kind of logical categories.
Tip. Watch at 0.75 speed 😉
I don’t know many rules or any strategy. I’ve never played. I don’t know the names of many positions. Uh oh.
You forgot to mention the texas route.

Definition of base defense is wrong. Yes, 4-3 could be a teams base defense, but base defense will vary depending on the team and scheme
