  • The once clean Ankobra River has become heavily polluted by illegal miners known as galamseyers. It is not only muddy but heavily polluted with mercury and some cases cyanide. Aquatic life is nearly lost and the water cannot even be used for irrigation by farmers. This is the extent of damage caused to the beautiful Ankobra River. This drone images show from different locations how the river has been destroyed completely.

As a Ghanaian who lived many many years in America I always thought to myself how could we as a people have been involved in selling our fellow human? How? We seem like such kind and warm people. But after seeing galamsey it makes sense to me how they acted in the past.
Those who have no care and regard for the people depending on the waters to do this to the rivers and not care and take paper money in exchange for gold and minerals.
    Isn’t it the same thing???
This hurts so bad, same as it hurts that we are blamed for what happened hundreds of years ago.
We will be accursed if this doesn’t stop

Your work communicates so well. I believe ecotourism is one of the ways to benefit from Ghana's nature yet conserve both floral and faunal component of our ecosystem, as well as improve our wellbeing. We should work together.
