    Paddy's DIY - How to replace the hinges on a uPVC window
    Another great instructional video brought to you by Paddy's DIY
    In this video I’m going to show you how to replace the hinges on a uPVC window. The window in this video is a top hung window; it is the exact same process for replacing the hinges on a side hung window. This is also the same process for any other window type that uses friction stay window hinges. (eg. Timber / wooden windows or aluminium windows)
    You can see in the video that there is a huge gap on one side of the window. This gap will start out very small, but will eventually get bigger and bigger over time. It is important to lubricate the hinges once or twice a year to prevent this from happening. It is also important to clean out any dirt from the hinges, as this can stop them moving freely and put strain on the hinges. Broken hinges are the number one cause of draughty windows. Replacing the hinges will fix this gap and will have the window closing tightly to the seals. A lot of people think that their seals have shrunk or need replacing, when in the majority of cases it's the hinges that need replacing.
    Always take extra care when replacing the hinges on your window. Remember the bigger the sash, the heavier it’s going to be. Get someone to help you hold and lift the sash when you’re replacing the hinges.

    I find Irish DIY channels like this, explain things a LOT better than others.
    Regarding alignment, I find nipping the screws up, but just enough to hold the sash, close the window (use the HEEL of your hand to get the position perfect) carefully open the window then simply tighten up the screws. Job done.

      Whatever works, my friend 👍 I like to see where the mushrooms of the espag are in relation to the keeps, so i want the hinges held in position and test that the sash is opening and closing without them hitting the keeps.

    I watched this a few weeks ago then went on Amazon and ordered 4 pairs of hinges. Total cost was £30. Took about 20 minutes per window. Now have no draughts and can’t hear the noise outside. I’d been quoted £150 for a company to come and do it for me.
    The hardest part is getting the window back on because of how heavy and awkward they are.
    Thanks for the video, you saved me a lot of cash.

    Never had to change a hinge before but your video made it so easy. I was done in less than an hour, would have been less but I had to realign one hinge. The window actually fits the frame better now as before, the diagonals never really lined up, great tip! Many thanks.

    What a brilliant vid, many thanks, I have a window where the lock won't close, now I think if I take out the middle screw then looses the slotted top and bottom then let the window drop down it should allow the bolts to slide into the lock where they are a little high atm. Great editing, and commentary

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you take out the middle screw and let it drop down, it will make it worse. It'll make it even lower and the bolts will probably strike the window frame. You want to push it up when the middle screw is out.

      No need for any trial and error when replacing existing.
      1 Remove sash from frame
      2 Set hinges to closed position
      3 Use combination square to measure height (or width) of hinge that juts out beyond end of the relevant part of the sash
      4 Remove old hinges
      5 Place the new closed hinge so it juts out the same amount as the old one
      6 Mark the position of the other end of the hinge on the sash
      Now you can open the hinge and do all your screw holes etc
      That's what I did anyway and it worked first time, only problem I had was the window was so bloody heavy 😫

      I drilled out the head of the rivets to release the windows, then pushed the rivets inside the frame. Provided you don't use too large a drill bit the original holes can then be pop-riveted again.

    Hi Paddy, thanks for the video. When refitting, because I'm reusing the same screw holes the screws don't bite aswell. I know with wood I usually stick a cocktail stick or golf tee into a hole to help with this situation but what do you do for UPVC?

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What i generally do is use a screw with a bigger thread. Generally the screws that are originally used are 4mm diameter. There are screws exactly for this scenario. If you search for upvc repair screws you'll find them. 4.3mm and 4.8mm diameter are the most common sizes for repair screws

    I have a couple of questions if you don't mind: where the hinges attach to the frame they are in a kind of white sheath which prevented them sliding out so we had to take the hinges from the window first, what are they for?
    Also when fitting the window back in the run up blocks (I think they're called) grinded together so I just removed one of them, how important are they?

      It sounds like they are fitted wrong. The hinges i use in the video are non handed. So you can open either hinge in the set to the left or the right. There are a lot of hinges out there that are handed eg. The right hand hinge has to be opened to the right. Sounds like you have them opened and fitted the wrong way

      @6johnward no the packers wouldn't affect that. I would say you have the hinge positioned on the sash too low. At the 2.50 mark in the video i mention this. You need to move the hinge position downward on the sash. This will have the effect of the moving the sash upwards when its back installed in the window frame. This will close the gap along the top. If you have the gap along the top at the left side only just move the left hinge. If it's across the whole top section, move both hinges

      @@PaddysDiy OK but I’ve used the existing top holes on the sash as per the video and then drilled a new bottom hole to accommodate the longer length of the new hinge.

      You could flip it over and change it opening from top hung to bottom hung. You'd need a chain or something to stop it flying out when you open it. Gravity will pull it open everytime it's opened.

    Great video! One question though, what do you do if the holes in your window frame are very close but not exactly in line with the holes in the new hinge? I'm guessing you cant just polyfill fhe old holes and drill away later

    • @PaddysDiy

      Great question. Not an easy one to answer. I'm assuming the windows are pvc? Even if the new hole in the hinge is a couple of millimetres off the old hole you should be OK with screwing it in the new position. Polyfila would just crumble. You can get proper pvc fillers but they're not that cheap

    Heyy Paddy could you make a video on a side swing window that has a gap on the top right corner, opposite the lock when closed. I think the window was swung open due to a gush of wind which has made it a bit stiff to close. Also the handle has gone a bit loose. Its a white PVC/UPVC bathroom window.

    Hi Paddy, great set of videos, one question at time mark 1:36 you can see that the old hinge has fitting lugs at the back to fit into the groove on the window, the new hinge doesnt, how do you stop the new hinge sitting lobsided inthe window frame slot ? I ran into this issue when trying to fit new hinges.

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a 4mm thick plastic glazing packer. You do it without the packer, you can line the hinge up so it straddles the either side of the groove. Takes a bit of finesse to get it to sit just right. When the screws are tight it won't move

      Get wd40 or similar with a stray attachment and spray a good lot at what you can see of the hinge. Particularly in at either corners where the top of the hinge is located. Leave it for half an hour. Then grab the sash and move it in and out motion. Should eventually start to open out further. Good luck 👍

      They are hex screws or star head screws.....to remove you will need allen keys or a hex head tip to fit a drill or screwdriver.....star head tips you will need to ask in your iron-monger,
      hex screw has 6 sides, star head screws have finely machined grooves running around the head
      I would hazard a guess and say they are hex headed screws.....Hope this helps.

    • @PaddysDiy

      At 2:59 and 5:07 you'll see that the middle screw hole doesn't line up with the old hole in the window. Reuse one of the screws that came out of the old hinge and drill it into the hole in the hinge. They're usually self tapping or self drilling heads tipped. So it will cut a new hole and fix in one go

      Hi Tom, it sounds like the hinges are positioned to low on the sash. Look a 2:47 in the video. If you move the position of both hinges up 5mm on each side. It will have the effect of sash closing lower along the bottom. Hopefully that will sort it for you.
