Todays video is about In Sound Mind, which is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated horror games ever. Tumble down the psychological horror rabbit hole of four tapes, filled with monsters, scares and jokes as we unravel this gem.

Wow hi! Just wanted to say THANK YOU for making this video. There's such incredible attention to detail here and I've shared it with the entire team. We've just celebrated 2 years since releasing In Sound Mind and it's been such a journey, and this video honestly helps reflect.
PS- We did consider making the inkblots mechanics shift and change per tape! It really does fit the overall narrative, but we had to make tough calls being a tiny team and couldn't fit everything in. Ended up focusing more on the unique weapons and boss fights.
PPS- Indeed, we used Unity for In Sound Mind. I can't say much yet but we're having an * unreal * time making our next one.
You guys made a absolutely amazing game and deserve all the props! especially how amazingly well you guys nailed the portrail of some of the anxieties etc that the patience show, Also idk who wrote the songs but DEAR GOD! they are so good! I absolutely loooove "Bottom of the pit" "A doll's house" "me and the boys" not just as songs but the messaging in the lyrics are absolutely amazing and fit each character/patient soooo well. You guys should be proud of what you accomplished
Great game, i wish your team luck on the next installment
The cat was dead, no excuses ;~~
is this "next installement" a new IP, perhaps?
Thanks for a great game! It's one of my favorites. I'm so excited for the next one!
The fact they made Agent Rainbow go from the expected “Spooky horror antagonist lurking around every corner” to the “I’m going to troll you so hard” is so fucking hilarious to me
Mans shows up, trolls the fuck outta you, only to make the mistake of elaborating and dies via ligma.
Yeah I think I've heard that voice before who the hell plays him

I was curious too so I checked. Smiling friends, Dbz abridged, oni cartoons, LoL, Jo-jo's i think, and like a hundred other things.

@@stucoofoo Good to know thanks man
If you are here reading the comments first, spoilers below:
Also goes quite well with the revelation that Agent Rainbow is your own fears and insecurities playing tricks on you. He is quite literally something in the back of your head mocking you.
I like to think the Mannequins are partly manifesting the trauma of the store employees who can’t forget that woman who died on their shift. Endlessly wondering how they could’ve saved her and trying to find peace by helping Desmond help Virginia.
May not line up with the necessary exposure to Agent Rainbow, but I think it’s fits the theme.
Or they are evil to Virginia cuz they have eyes
Lucas implied that the drug was also in the tap water. Maybe that's paranoia, but the ship crash did seem to release at least a bit into the waters.
also seems like a reflection of virginia's maladaptive thoughts - everything about them seems scary and threatening at first, but it turns out they just want to help. virginia was convinced everyone was judging or laughing at her everywhere she went, but if she'd been able to trust them she would have found out most people are kind.
@AzureSiniy I mean, it explains why they show up elsewhere
With the drug only in the tap in trace amounts, the store workers probably were only able to make small amounts of change within the landscapes Desmond explores, mainly in homa mart, cuz that's where they worked, but they served as spectators in spots where they couldn't help
Yeah honestly. Like I've worked in retail for 12 years, and it's hell on earth a lot of the time. To be on shift while a woman locks herself in the bathroom and then kills herself. I would quit my job immdately.
Creepy, moving mannequins that just want to help you are actually an awesome idea and I am all for that.
That final mannequin high-five was just the perfect flip of every single mannequin trope in the horror genre.
I want Markiplier to play this, maybe it’ll help with his mannequin fear 😂
I, absolutely, loved that moment!! @@joshuakim5240
I always find non aggressive entities in horror games oddly endearing. I remember playing an SCP game and there was this weird spider thing that almost always stayed out of sight. despite clearly being intended to be creepy, in an environment full of creatures actively trying to kill me it ended up being more comforting than anything else, a sense that I wasn't alone and the thing nearby wasn't hostile.
@@Pihsrosnec oh you would love SCP 999 and the bear with a heart of patchwork
I love how agent rainbow says at the start that "he killed the cat" knowing he's just a representation of Desmond it puts so much more meaning to that statement. (with him accidentally killing his cat and all.)
Curiousity killed the cat (Coping and trying to shift blame)
I killed the cat (realization and guilt)
Curiosity led the cat to me (adopting the cat and having the crab apple plant)
@@MonsterEmphire fire lily, not crab apple
I really like that our main character's trauma that he didn't want to remember wasn't overly extreme. It was sadness about losing a partner and a beloved pet. It wasn't like, extreme violent murder or anything. Just... sadness.
It's not that extreme trauma doesn't happen, but to see it be such a simple, mundane sadness, is so wonderful. I adore it.
I always love media that can show how diverse trauma can be because it can be validating for people who have trauma from things that aren’t like war or moments that look severe from the outside and showing how you can have trauma from moments that may not look like too much to someone else.
sometimes "smaller" things cause intense and extreme trauma. losing a beloved pet or a child or a partner well before their time is one of those things. it's not uncommon for some more vulnerable people to snap after losing a loved one. even then i think that losing a loved one, even if it's a peaceful pasing, isnt really a small thing either, it's just generally seen as smaller than a more violent and more immediately life threatening trauma, which also can lead to people downplaying their own trauma because it's "not a life or death situation" or something like that. i really appreciate that they touched on that in game, it definitely brings those "smaller" traumatic situations the attention they need, since way too often we sadly see those traumas being dismissed when trauma is being discussed
I absolutely adore the mannequins. you take the most obvious, been there done that psychosocial horror trope, and then not only subvert expectations, but make the most charming and wholesome things I’ve ever seen in a horror game
I really liked that you could find the notepad and the pen to put little faces on them
The high five in the final fight warmed my heart
@@JombridgeRight? That made me unreasonably happy.
@@JombridgeSame. It was hilariously adorable.
It's wonderful.
Small correction on Allen: He's not actually dead, he's "just" comatose and in a hospital. Many fans speculate that a possible continuation of ISM could be about Lucas and Desmond trying to save Allen, but yeah, he's still alive
it would be nice if we do play as Allen to see Desmond as a humanoid figure of light that when ever they appear scares off everything else and can possibly clear paths for us
He is alive, but being burned alive to that point, he isn't going to be doing much.
not in a hospital, in a vegatative state having seizures in his appartment
@@exertationshey I heard burnedmen are popular Caesars legion!

A big theme I noticed was exposure therapy. Each character, through their boss fight, had to be exposed to their fear to overcome it.
Whoa
hehe ancient technique of jumping in the maw of void
Did Max have a fear of pills and barrels?
@cheekibreeki904 No, but Max is a narcissist and did have a fear of introspection and realizing he was the bad guy, and that his anger was only hurting himself and those around him. The last thing a narcissist wants to do is admit that everything is their own fault.
@@Dr_Shmoopzwhich was not at all present in the encounter, not to mention two thirds of his current circumstance is not his fault at all, being that of either Mayer or the judicial system (unless you meant to say "responsibility" instead). Allen didn't have any fear of lighthouse bulbs and flare guns, either, to my knowledge.
Agent Rainbow's character design HAS to be a Freddy Krueger homage, right? Not just the silhouette, but his voice, his quips, his straight-up silliness, I even see a vague facial resemblance. It's hard to imagine that wasn't their intent. I love it.
He kinda looks like a psychedelic hybrid of Kruger and Slender man
Looks a lot like nick valentine, he has the complexion and outfit.
considering there's other horror references in the game (like a hidden It easter egg in lucas' tape), i wouldn't be surprised!
He's more a representative of a "Government boogyman". Always around the corner, watching you, taunting you with his presence, and clamping down on your freedom. He's like those abusing the chemical agent rainbow to gain control over others.
I really love the fact that the mannequins help you in the store. In so many horror franchises mannequins are vessels for evil and cheap jumpscares, but here they feel more like your friend who forgets to announce their presence while trying to help you, a really neat way to get the player emotionally more invested and fuel curioisty while subverting such an old trope
fr i wanna hug one, they're super chill
The ship in Allen's nightmare being called the Thanatos is really clever.
Thanatos is the personification of death in Greek mythology and one of his symbols is an inverted torch, which is referenced by the lighthouse, the torch is supposed to guide the living but it can also lead the dead.
Interesting piece of information: At the easternmost part of the English county Kent is an area known as Thanet. Thanet used to be an island where is is believed the people from mainland Kent would take their dead to bury. This is a theory based on the name the Romans gave the island, and the higher than average pre Roman burial sites.
Over time the sea between Thanet and Kent silted up, until it became the river Wantum in the Middle Ages. Today, the river Wantsum is little more than a trickle that appears with heavy winter rain, but the reference to death and burial remains in the area name of Thanet. With raising sea levels Rhanet has the possibility of becoming an island again.
also why scratched into the walled you can see with the mirror shard is "the ship is death"
I mentioned it in my own comment but it’s very ironic that the ship is named Thanatos, since Thanatos was specifically associated with peaceful or gentle death while the Keres were personifications of violent death.
Okay, my PTSD has nothing to do with war, but little details like balloons popping triggering a war flashback? So good, it's clear so much thought has gone into this game
And it's not a fluke either. The devs have been this good since the original nightmare house.
Absolutely cannot wait for a sequel or really any project from them.
The “Here Comes The Saviour” is a genuinely beautiful piece of music, and absolutely marvellous for an Indy project. A lot of talent went into this game
@ashergrieb2384 You're correct! All proper songs in this game were by the Living Tombstone, including Here Comes The Savior and other character songs. They're legit really good songs imo
It was this song made me interested in the game in the first place
@@WiseFatOwl Me too I literally played it intending to listen to "Me and The Boys, And "Here Comes the Savior" but stayed for the story
Honestly the ending of "you were a good cat" I found way more emotional than it being a person, just as animals can love you unconditionally and rely on you so much to look after them, that anything that happens to them you feel so much more responsible for.
It honestIy hit me the most too. I have 4 cats and i hate the thought they will pass one day. It just felt so emotional to have a pet thank you for a good life led that I cried while playing the game. Amazing Conclusion!
That part actually made me cry quite a bit, honestly
Most people (sadly) value the lives of animals way more than human lives, so it is a good idea to make your companion a talking cat because people will instantly care more than if she was a human.
My cat recently died because of an accident. And i randomly started playing In Sound Mind, because i thought a horror game might put my mind on different thoughts. I had no idea about anything regarding the game so playing a game where you have a dead cat hit me harder than anything. Good game, but my god was that just not the right time. And then i randomly stumble upon this video. Strange how the world works.
@@_ANDRE. Hey man, I just wanted to say that I'm really sorry about your cat 😔 it's so hard to lose a pet... My cat, Pickles, died a year ago now, and it's still really hard. I think about him every day and I miss him a whole lot.
But, anyways... I just wanted to tell you that I was sorry. I hope you're doing a little better. Take care! 🙂
I'm really surprised you didn't even mention the 6 records/songs you can find in the game, sang by each character themselves. It meant they had to find voice actors who could not only act, but also sing. I've never seen that before, and I really liked that element. It didn't always make sense, there's was no way Lucas's voice actor was also 55 as the character in the game was meant to be with that voice, but it was really cool.
Lucas’s song was probably hinting more that the song was written during the war, when Lucas was young and his friends were still alive.
I think Lucas' and Max's songs were the only ones not sung by the actual VAs, but I could be wrong.
18:06 The manikins could represent Virginia’s warped view of other people, they look twisted and scary, but in reality they’re not all that bad.
And the ink blok’s lights change between the patient’s colors
In that sense the fact they move when you aren't looking could be how she views them. She can't stand to look at others past brief glances, so every time she does glance at someone the're in a different spot.
most of them just really want to help
The light changes depending on their state of alertness. I don't think there's much relation to the patients.
I feel like Agent Rainbow could also be a reference to the Rainbow herbicides used in the Vietnam war, the most well known one being Agent Orange. They were not only very harmful for the Vietnamese, but the troops fighting as well
After reading this comment, I remembered there was a file you pick up in this game that references "Agent Purple, Agent Orange, Agent Green" in regards to experimental drugs and a little note scribbled on it asking "Where does Agent Rainbow fit in?" Something like that. I'll have to go back and look for it again.
The game spells it out.
@@cheekibreeki904 It might not be so obvious to some. I had never heard of the Rainbow Herbicides before and they don't really teach about it in school. At least they didn't at any of the schools I attended.
@@ravenhurst96Well I guess I just learned something new today I thought it was just agent orange. Hope you have a good day/night
Consider that the mannequins represent the employees at the supermarket and while they seem threatening, they actually are there to help.

I haven't played the game but from the essay I can say I like that the people he was helping weren't villainized. It was a nice change of pace compared to most games that deal with mental health.
Yeah, that's a two-sided decision that I have to say I really like. On one side, the patients were all genuinely good people that clearly struggled with something, whose cases were exasperated by things beyond their control.
And on the other side of things, this game did not take the route many horror games take with therapists and doctors by making the main character himself be a therapist who himself struggled and also genuinely tried to help all of them and found himself crushed with guilt over failing to do so. A direct contrast to therapists and doctors being malignant or experimenting on patients.
This effectively circumvented two tired horror tropes at once, making the narrative stronger for it, and treating mental health with greater respect.
It's ok you can say The Medium from Bloober team.

You know, I have never felt something on this level. The ending really made me feel like someone understood. As someone who suffers from mental health issues, the games manifestation of self doubt, and the lines that the protagonist uses to overwrite the tapes, and then the ending….it touched me. I know you didn’t make this game, but if you didn’t cover it, I would have never seen or heard of it. And I really needed to hear the message. I’m not crying…you’re crying
Fully sobbing by the end,
Which ones?
I'm at the end of my master degree and my last internship was in a psychosomatic ward. I talked with my supervising therapists and doctors a lot, and each and every one of them had something they felt incredibly guilty over. Patients they wanted to help, but couldn't. Decisions they had no say in but that they still felt responsible for because they were made based on passages of their reports. And working there for just a few months I totally got it. I felt this overwhelming sense of wanting to protect my patients... cause I'd gotten to know them, their struggles and how fucking strong they are! There was not one patient I am not incredibly proud of. Not one that I couldn't stand. You're not working with mental illness, you're working with people. And you form connections. But if you aren't careful, those immense feelings of responsibility can break you. You quickly forget to be kind to yourself. You only see all mistakes you have made, those little words in between you can't take back. You're not lifting heavy objects or climbing around dangerous structures, but it's still a tough job. All the while you're working in a health care system that doesn't value you, your well being, your health. Or the health of your patients.
I haven't played the game, but I appreciate the story it's telling. It's a story that I've not seen told in that way much.
thank you for your service, you're doing really important work out there. be kind to yourself, above all else.
fun fact about lucas' level: if you use the radio shutdown on the flash too many times, he'll cover his radio nodes with wood that you have to shoot off
Nice profile photo that’s one of my favorite characters
During WW2, tankers learned to put wood on their tanks to make enemy rocket launchers detonate early saving the tank. It still works today when dealing with RPGs.
Currently playing the game myself, but I'll keep this in mind for when I get to this part. 😊
all the horrific ends for his previous patients and the cat is what got me crying...
Not sure if you caught it, but the balloons popping at 1:13:20 "triggered" a PTSD flashback which was the next dangerous part

Legitimately so shocking that it's barely known by anyone, I swear I shared this game with so many of my friends and they agreed it was awesome.
The bit with Tonya at the end legitimately has me tearing up…
You're not alone in that regard 😢
Yeah. She knows.

we love how much of a love letter this game is to survival horror in general, showing love for the genre while also poking fun at its quirks in a self-aware manner.
we also really love how the game portrayed the patients; it feels like horror games so often dehumanize or vilify mentally ill and disabled folk, but In Sound Mind portrays complex people with complex problems and traumas, in a really sympathetic light that's not condescending either. it's really refreshing.
That last bit with Tonia, it set me to crying
Man I love my cat
We can see that.
Coming from a small studio, this game has impressive detail and a unique quality to it. I appreciate the characterization of the people struggling with their illnesses, it makes them feel like real people and not just walking talking symptoms. I’ll definitely have to give this one a try.

The second level seems like a direct homage to Allan Wake. The main subject is named Allan who has a fear of the dark, light is used as a safe haven and a ward against monsters, and the main objective is to cast away the dark with the use of light(The lighthouse in this game, and The Clicker in Allan Wake)
There was an interview with the main writer, who says he didn't play 'Alan Wake' until AFTER making Allen's tape and pretty much freaked out by how much he accidentally referenced.

not often that horror treats people with mental health issues with this much compassion. really cool of it.
in sound mind is something I love. it really hit me on a personal level due to the own mental struggles I had. I related to 3/4 patients in the game. the way everything was built let the game show and not tell you a lot of the details before they are revealed. and the way it often subverted expectations, like the mannequins. normally being evil in games, were actually helping you. the way the monsters were all just victims. even the main character. we see how he failed to help these people but how he still tried. he kept fighting for them.
and the SONGS. those were amazing.
Dude so glad that you covered this, got it while it was on sale and was genuinely impressed by the story. Also I was surprised The Living Tombstones worked on the music when I launched the game, it was kinda wacky to see their work in a game.
Just a quick thing after fully watching the video, every patient has their own vinyl that you can find in their room after completing their chapter using the gimmick the chapter introduced. They aren't crucial to the story but it shines some light on each individual character as they all sing about their own struggles. Also I'm pretty sure he said that Allen Shore is dead in the video but I think in his patient file it says that he is wounded and comatose, which I guess could be counted as almost dead. Worth playing for yourself pretty neat game.
They personal vinyl in the game were a GREAT addition. I after getting the first one, i refused to move on until I found the next one. Bottom of the Pit was my personal favorite.
Pets can be such an important part of our lives, and especially great at helping us cope and A study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found that cat owners have lower blood pressure, trigylceride levels, and cholesterol. They're sweet companions who when you win them over really love you with all their being. When I heard he purchased a lily, I gasped given that iliys being toci isn't uncommon knowledge. The sheer guilt he must have felt to know he poisoned Tonya, but to have the closure of 'her' telling him he did his best and she loved him is really sweet.
‘You were almost a…. Jill sandwich’ is the ultimate RE dad joke. One of Barry’s finest moments. 💀
This is the kind of horror about mental illness that I adore. Not "ohh scary, this person is mentally ill and dangerous" or "youre losing your mind and going coo-coo!!"
Instead, horror centering the actual feelings of those struggling. The horror is the mental illness, not the mentally ill themselves.
As a horror fan who's both extremely passionate ab mental health and who's struggled with mental illness my entire life, I can't get enough of empathetic horror
Edit: I'm at the end fight and man I'm getting emotional
God, I'm in tears by the end of this. I'm not as horror person, so it's something I won't play sadly. But man, this really hits home more than I thought it would.
Same! I'm still emotionally recovering from Tanya's story, lol.
Gameplay wise, it wasn't really that heavy on the horror elements. even if you struggle with things like that, I think you should be able to handle it.
I also wanna point out I like that the game does have humour in it,it doesn't wallow in the darness to be scary or make you depressed, it does have jokes and silly moments to lighten the mood. gives it a unique feel.
I really love games that turn human struggle and mental illness into something creative. It'll always be such an interesting concept to me, to see how people decide to represent mental illness. Kinda like Psychonauts, showing someones mind through art is so cool.
Sadly most of the stuff that handles it blunders it. Looking at any game made by blooper…or movies like split
i find it boring this isnt as agregous but having every game be about depression is boring omori was cool until wow its about depression ... like can we just have a game about a guy dealing with monsters thats not wow mental health with zero ideas about actually fixing it just pointing it out ad nauseum
@@thecoolestofthe834s2 Well you shouldn't play psychological horror games then. Omori is literally tagged as psychological horror just like in sound mind. If you don't want to deal it then you should not play games that are literally tagged in a genre famous for dealing with unstable characters and unreliable mentally ill narrators.
@@thecoolestofthe834s2There's more to this game than depression though. I agree that having the twist be "it's all in your head" is kinda boring, especially if it's another game where the main character has depression and that's their whole personality.
In Sound Mind covers Social anxiety, Paranoia/fear of the dark, anger issues, PTSD from a soldier, and a more healthy healing of self doubt. Depression is overplayed but I think they dodged that by being more specific with the conditions and by having the characters be real people with strengths and flaws instead of "smol uwu bean make cute fanart plz".
Omori was about escapism and taking responsibility of your actions. Depression can be a real consequence of those things, but overall it was more fear and regret than sadness that drove the game.
Both games mentioned coping methods, wether they worked or not, and provided examples. Hell, Desmond is on some persona 4 defeating your jungian shadows with the help of your friends stuff.

Given how helpful the mannequins are, I want to see Markiplier play this game - not just because it would give a great game the spotlight it deserves, but also because he'll have a hard time completing a horror game where accepting help from mannequins is vital to progression. XD
Honestly this whole game and it’s ending makes me honestly crying from the bittersweet way things tie up and I love it so much that I absolutely can’t wait to buy it and play it myself because of how well you represented the game and your passion and love for it.
What a beautiful and charming game!! I cant believe I never heard of it before so thank you for covering it! I love how supportive and caring Desmond was to his patients to the bitter end. The mannequins being terrifying at first thanks to general horror game expectations but being helpful and genuinely funny throughout the game was the best part. Also Tonia best girl 10/10
The clip of the whale skeleton ties so well into the role of Agent Rainbow in the story! Whales communicate over large distances using sound waves the same way Desmond was able to with Lucas! It was amazing foreshadowing to the ending
As someone who struggles with anxiety & has autism, the fear of being watched resonates so well with me. For me, meds keep my brain from spiralling, but Virginia's show of her fear, the way it all comes crashing down at just that small change of having to go to a new store- it hits so true I could cry. It's nice to be represented, especially in such a honest and genuine good way? This game seems to handle these themes so well, it humanises all of them it's. . That's lovely.

Mental health issues is something that a lot of horror games try to tackle. But there's a big problem that most of them fall into; they make a character's illness their only defining trait.
They forget that people with mental health issues are just that... people. It's very nice to see it handled so well in a game.
"i am right. I am just. I am alive and in sound mind." God sometimes you just hear something that really bites your heart out and leaves you sobbing. The voices in your head can be wrong, it's not all hell so long as you believe it can be better 😢

Thanks for covering this one.
The best horror games are the ones that don't take themselves seriously all the time. Horror and humour go hand in hand because, in the end, they're both exaggerations of reality, taking on the absurd and unreal and pushing it to the forefront, simply done in different directions. And this game is a great example of knowing when to be silly, to give you a breather, and when to slam on the gas and go full on towards terror. Such a shame i can only enjoy these types of games vicariously through other people due to my own mental issues and self-inflicted paranoia, but oh well. It's better than missing these masterpieces entirely. Keep up the good work, man.
I was really not expecting such an emotional impact. This is beautiful.
No joke. As a cat owner who struggles with mental illness, Tanya's reveal had me sobbing 😢
I love how i can count in videos like these to expose me to new games that i otherwise have no way of knowing existed. Its another thing that i will find it extremely difficult to find this to play for myself but the essay has given me what i really look for in a game. The deep story and how each part was connected to one another. All ending up to show us a very real kife problem we all face. Thanks for this
Truly wonderful to see this game covered. It, flying under the radar, was truly sad. Its so unique its unbelievable
Ngl, the cat revelation hit home pretty hard for me 😌 I cried watching this. Thank u 💙
Funny enough I am actually friends with one of the developers of In Sound Mind. I'll be sure to let them know about this video, bet they'll be real happy to see it.
damn, how I love this channel. I've never thought about games in such metaphorical way and you highlight details and explain backstories I might have never thought of. I'm really grateful I discovered it and wish you the best on your youtube journey.
Tonia is out here with Han Solo levels of chill, "yeah...I know." Damn cool cat.
This was a PHENOMINAL essay about an absolute gem of a game. One thing I think should be mentioned is the Vinal records you can collect based on the different characters. Each song was tailored to perfectly fit the theme of each of their demons. TheLivingTombstone did the entirety of the game's soundtrack, and they did an ASTOUNDING job of capturing those feelings into 5 different personal songs for the characters. My personal favorite was "Bottom of the Pit." I highly encourage anyone to give this game's soundtrack a listen. I'm genuinely exited to see what the dev team comes up with for their next project.
He mentions the scientists record and has them all on the shelf at the end, so I guess it might have been on purpose? Or he just couldn't find a spot to fit them in.
This game was a gem, that me and a close friend played - during a gaming burn-out and content draught. It was a delight, but oddly heavy on us, as we both have our "letters" (conditions my ptsd was pushed a bit during the 3rd and 4th chapter - military service). Certain things can be cathartic to experience, or go through... throughout someone elses journey. Thank you for letting us in on your experiences and analytic mind when it came to In Sound Mind.
I came across In Sound Mind when it was free on Epic a while back. I've never been into horror games but this one provided an interesting, mysterious plot with some comedic elements that quickly drew me in. The puzzles are pretty fun with only a few giving me a little trouble. Nobody else I know has really heard of this game besides having The Living Tombstone attached so I'm super glad to see one of my favorite content creators covering this. Thank you!
I was amazed that this ended up working out as well as it did, I played the demo a long time ago and I almost worried it would never came out-- when it did, it felt like a real breath of fresh air.
It’s incredible that how much work and effort they’ve put into making this horror game, especially using the Unity Engine. Best wishes for these devs in their future careers.
The ending made me shed a tear, cats are just really cool for me and im sad when the cat in the story left.
It should also be mentioned that The Living Tombstone did the soundtrack for this game. Yes, the "man behind the slaughter" Living Tombstone. He wrote songs for each of the characters, and they are all amazing. From the depressive Bottom of the Pit, or the sad tale of an ex-soldier with Me and the Boys, they're beautifully composed and definitely worth a listen.
You've really made justice to this game, i remember seeing all the teasers from The Living Tombstone, and when it launched, i loved it.
This game really is a diamond in the rough of asset flips of the Unity platform.
Was hoping you shed some light on the banger OST of this game, the vinyls are really a break and a comiscal experience, and show all the love the creators had when making the game.
Overall great video
I can't believe you never mentioned the soundtrack of the game. Made by The Living Tombstone, and I literally put every song into my music playlist just because of how good it is.
You should cover Tormented Souls some time. It's extremely underrated and it does NOT deserve it. It's one of the best Survival Horror games in recent years, utilizing everything that made Resident Evil and Silent Hill good and giving it it's own unique touch.
Especially with the sequel coming out next year it's about time this game gets some much needed attention.
I love the name of the ship at 38:32. The USS Thanatos. Thanatos was the personification of death in greek mythology.
This was an incredible experience enhanced by your immaculate voice over work and scripting. Kudos, friend.
Edit: Doing editing for this in three days in SO crazy! Dude you're legendary in the crunch. Big ups.
Watching this just a week after losing my own cat is - well. It's an experience.
I love you, Peaches. I didn't get to say goodbye, but you were a real cool cat. Rest well.
Teared up a bit at that high five, what a fantastic game I'm baffled I hadn't even heard of.
Fun mythology connections with Lucas' level:
One, The Fields of Elysium were the best place in the Underworld, reserved for those who lived and died virtuously and gloriously, both were required, and being a great warrior was a common way in.
The other is that the most famous story involving a cyclops is one where said cyclops attempts to kill a company returning from a long war.
Also, unrelated to Lucas, the rainbow was seen as a messenger between the gods, personified by minor goddes Iris.
I am so glad you covered this game, it is a fantastic game that deserve more recognition and praise. BUT i am a bit sad that you didnt bring up the songs that you get after each tape for those who havent played it: You get a record/song sung by the person the tape is about that describes their feelings and such and they are absolutely phenomenal both a songs but also as just expression pieces, virginias song "A doll's house" Allans "bottom of the pit" Lucas "Me and the boys" are all fantastic song (yes im skipping max and some other but they are my 3 favs) but they also contain messages about their feelings and thoughts. would have loved it if you had talked about them but im glad you talked about this game overall! Amazing video as always totallyPointless
That Watcher boss is a fantastic take on Medusa and I love it.
So glad you're covering this game. I picked it up when it came out and I absolutely loved it from start to finish. The story, the vibes, the music. It was all amazing.
Tonia reminds me of the time where my family forgot to implement a schedule for the diffuser, overdid it while it had eucalyptus (VERY poisonous to cats. I still don't know why my mum thought it was good idea; she claimed "not dangerous enough to poison in the "usual dose") diffusing and ended up nearly killing our cat. Had my cat died because of something as small as a risk and a mistake, then I think I would have just burned the town. Dad also tried to feed her garlic bread that one time, resulting in a very ticked-off me because I've got bad anxiety and so don't take those risks without research most of the time (I knew that garlic was toxic to cats.)
I should say they're good people... and they try to be... but they take too many risks and fight with each other too often to handle...
Glad you covered In Sound Mind! It’s one of my favorite games of all time! I love the characters, specially Max, his story hits close to home.
Oh btw Alan isn’t dead, he is however in a coma
I love the mannequins that help you. For me, it's a REAL subversion of expectations, they actually help you and they're hilariously comedic in it too. Especially with the faces, they're literally just 😊👍
This game really reminds me of GYLT. The monsters/enemies are similar, the way it highlights and conveys the story through out the game is similar to this one, and not only that both GYLT and sound mind take place in a small town
One of my favorite details about this game was when Desmond learned that Virginia died at the store he urged her to go to;
I completely expected the game to take the direction of being about Desmond regretting his actions and feeling guilt for trying to help her. But instead, he was adamant that she would never do such a thing to herself without outside influence.
At first, I was surprised he'd assume that so easily, but then I realized that it really showed that Desmond was a strong person who believed in himself, and also that he really did believe in the people he was helping. He knew they were stronger than to just give up on a whim. I really respect that story decision, it's a small but unique and powerful way they handled it!
That finale where he talked down Agent Rainbow's taunts gave me goosebumps.
10:03 "Giving us a chance to practice our aim" Yeh, you need the practice, lol.
I bought this game about a year ago, played through 4 hours, then stopped for reasons I can't remember. Seeing you made a video about it, I thought 'Oh yeah, that was a cool game, should pick it back up' then powered through the rest of the game in one sitting. It's unbelievable to me that this was We Create Stuff's first game. Sure it's rough around the edges, but people's 5th games are like that. Their 10th games are like that. Their hundredth games are like that. This game is a phenomenal achievement and I'm so happy I played it.
Wow, this game is incredible. Seeing people struggle in ways I'm all too familiar with hit really hard, and the story was incredible overall. Thank you for sharing such a amazing and underrated experience!
First of all, the game is fantastic. Superb. The attention to details, the thought, the love that has been put into it... astonishing.
Second of all, I regret watching this video. I regret it because I would love to have experienced this game solely by myself. I am sobbing. I feel this game would've been very cathartic for me. I might still play it a bit later when the details are not so fresh in my mind...
I really LOVED how they utilized the weeping angel gimmick to not JUST scare you but also HELP you. those mannequins are such bros! also Watcher r34 when?
1:09:39 - aside from Jacob's Ladder, there's a similar idea to this in the manga/anime Banana Fish, which was written and set in the 1980s and adapted to screen maybe four years ago? The title drug was even tested out on soldiers in this same war. I wonder if any member of the team read it...
