Hi Anthony Barker, I've been following your channel for a while and I really appreciate all the in-depth reviews you do on car audio systems. I work with a company that specializes in automotive head units, and we’ve just launched a new car entertainment product that I think your audience would love. We'd love to discuss a potential collaboration with you. Can we connect? Thanks!
Question - How "plug n play" is this after the initial setup? Everytime you get in the car, do you have to enable all these Wifi connections., etc., etc., etc., or will things just automatically connect? I added bluetooth audio to my car and even that is annoying when I get into my car as each / every time I have to reconnect the phone to the bluetooth. Also, does this approach have any capability for backup/side cameras? Any provider that sells wireless cameras w/ android app?
I’d say it could be better. It all depends on the two connecting tablet and mobile devices. There’s a setting in the HUR app that is meant to detect the nearby BT of the mobile and auto start the app and initialise the connections but in practice it didn’t work well for me. It’s no going to beat an internal built-in system. You’ll still need to power on the tablet or touch to wake it up, fire up the HUL if it’s not running already, and then make sure both are connected over WiFi before AAuto kicks in. I’m not sure of any backup cam apps or support in this field. One to google I think to find that out.
@@CarPlayLife What about just using the tablet w/ mobile internet directly? If it's a full blown tablet, it should have everything you need anyway. I guess the trick then is you need a good UI to make it look like a vehicle interface? Not sure if an app exists for that, but if not, could be something interesting, especially if you build some OBD-II support in there. I wonder if anything exists or a framework that you can start from?
I'm sure some launchers for Android might help with the UI side of things. Maybe something like carwebguru could work like that. This HUR method just makes it easier to seamlessly carry over streaming accounts etc., than be logged also onto a second device, which could be pinched with all your accounts on it. Acting like a slave device minimises risk and smooths out account connection - if it works right.
It’s hybrid of two mounts I found. The clip from the one in this video th-cam.com/video/-WKhbSp4UTc/w-d-xo.html and the magnet plate from this mount in this video th-cam.com/video/fgo5oCN8Wy4/w-d-xo.html. It’s what I could grab at the time that seemed to work with the tablet’s weight.
What I would look for is a vertical lifting mount attached to the top of the dashboard and have it hang down over the main display. Then you can lift it up to access the display and should hang with enough of a gap to reach under the arm to get to the hazard button. Or dash mount it above with a narrower display,
I tried a few left over from reviews and I found this one to hold the best www.carplaylife.com/review/avolare-magnetic-air-vent-car-phone-mount-review/ there may be better options out there. The issue is vibrations from travel and a magnetic mount slipping down over time. You almost needs a rest below the tablet to stop it from sliding down with each bump in the road. This is less of an issue if the tablet is super light but this one was around 500grams.
Can the headunit reloaded app autolaunch when connecting a phone with a wired connection or do i have to launch the app manually every time? Im using a cheap android head unit in my car.
Good question. I wanted touch on this in the video but I ran out of time and it was harder to get it to work each time. So in the WiFi launcher app there is a section in settings that you can tell to launch the app when your phone connects to a BT source. This could be the car BT for audio. So when you connect to the car BT the app launches and if you have the service always running (this is also an option in settings) it should connect to HUR. On the head unit you should have an option in Android OS settings to auto launch an app. Select HUR app and it will auto start each time you fire up the system and along with the WiFi launcher app it should both talk and sync with each other. That’s the idea anyway, in practice it’s a bit hit and miss. I found removing BT and WIFI profiles that might auto connect when near home helps simplify connections between devices. Hope this helps
Hi, I have problem when my phone connected with tablet and I start the app, tablet is connected to car speakers with aux and Music play on car speakers but when i calling sound is on phone, Can I change it? I want sound always on car speakers, Music and calling.
Not that I know of but there may be an OTG cable out there that splits but you have to make sure it does data as well as power. The best way is use wireless Android auto and charge the tablet via cable and the Android via wireless charging mount somewhere in the car.
It’s tricky with pass thru charging I have an android tablet mounted with a CarPlay dongle and two other USBs connected that allows charging as well as power to all dongles - the only solution I found that worked was a data hub by Lava Labs Canada but it works a treat It only works with certain tablets like Samsung Tab A Lite
Ah yes, I can see how a hub could work with this setup. A cable on its own right might be too complex of an ask. The other solution might be finding a tablet that does wireless charging through a Qi back plate. Then you can rule out one item that needs power. But finding such a tablet is rare I think
Not quite the same way. It would require hardware which limits how the tablet can charge, so it much more difficult doing it the Android tablet way. I will be doing a similar video for CarPlay sometime soon.
I think only an OTG cable works, but there are still issues with powering the tablet and sending data this way. I've yet to try it personally, but that's what I read when I researched it some time ago. Wireless charging tablet is another work around this problem.
Because when I use mobile as the host hotspot my data doesn’t work and no android auto apps have internet. So I had to make the tablet the host and using mobile for BT audio didn’t work for some reason 🤷🏻♂️
