If they gave you £10k to take the Victory it would still be a crap deal! It's worse than a bare hull, as you'd have to rip out everything in it before rebuilding it. You'd never stop those decks leaking and there would be nowhere to sleep whilst you worked on it. Roll on next week! Keep looking👍

harbour master of a sailing club here, the only reason that boat is still standing there is because fibre glass boats cost a fortune to get rid of... `RUN AWAY! :) For ten grand you want a full interior working engine and standing rigging. Nothing less than that.

Agree with everyone else, that 40 footer is a money pit and is basically an empty shell needing new deck and complete interior, plus engine, sails, rigging, electrics etc. I would choose something that you can upgrade as you go along. Enjoying your journey, good luck!

I think you’ve already decided to not buy that wreck, but if you have any doubt: Don’t do it! :-) The design and hull might be good, but a rotten wood deck means that you have to build a boat, not fix it up, and even after making a new wooden deck, it will get leaks all the time. If buying that boat, definitely build a fiber glass deck, but please don’t. :-) Will be fun to follow you on the hunt!

You’re a good man with a good heart. What ever boat you buy, you’ll do fine. Experience on your cat will help you on your next adventure. Don’t get sucked in on the victory $$$. Look at as many as possible. Consider how much room you had on your cat and how much more rolling at anchor and heeling over a monohull does. Have a sailing friend look at the first, second, and third choices. Someone who can step back and look at it without tunnel vision and too much excitement. It’s ALWAYS going to cost MORE to fix than expected . ALWAYS ALWAYS Things you couldn’t see until you take something else apart!! Be smart-SMART!!! Once you make a final decision, sleep on it for a few days.

Mark, glad you are keeping up with the sailing dream! The POS 40 footer is a fire sale boat. Drive back to that gas station, get some hot dogs, a red can of gas, and some matches. Come back and spark it up and have a weaner roast, maybe kick back with a beer and sigh with relief that you dodged a really bad decision. Get something that has all the stuff where you can do some minke type work for 4-6 months, maybe add or replace a few lower cost things that are necessary, and get back on the water. Those old guys remind me of the shady person who owns a used car lot that has only 6 cars and they have a really good deal for you. Don't be in a hurry, spend a bit more on a fiberglass boat (as little wood as possible), get dad to rebuild the engine, and have fun. I wish I had done this at your age, it's really fun to watch your videos.

The Victory 40 is a fantastic blue water vessel. I love Nicki and Ben's SV Bora Bora. Unfortunately, this one is literally a shell of what it once was and as such should be given away to someone who can devote years of labor and many, many thousands to bring her back to glory. Clearly, this one is not going back into the water for years and will be a money pit as others have suggested. Sometimes the cheapest salvage level boats turn out to be the most expensive in time and money to restore.

To do justice to the Victory is a 2-year project for two people. Minke needed so much more than you gave her. Don't skimp on this boat. If you don't have purchase price + £30,000, don't go there!

Well Mark, there is no doubting the enthusiasm of your DIY skills, which is fine for some projects but replacing the deck is a big expensive job that is even more expensive if you don’t get it right first time. I know that you are keen to get back on the water but had you thought about signing up for something like the boat building course at Falmouth Marine school and perhaps honing your practical skills further?
The Victory 40 was once a lovely boat and could be a lovely boat again, but unlikely on a shoe string budget and I'd say she is probably 6k to 8k over priced. You should probably think about investing in a GRP moisture meter and a small panel pin hammer for checking soft spots, if you are looking at these types of project.

That Victory has a lot of potential as it is a blank canvas and with a bit of thought and planning could become an awesome cruising boat, I'd love a boat like that !
But, I think it might be a little beyond your skills and abilities, a project like that could become much bigger than you realise very quickly !
First job is to plan the layout and work out where all the tanks will go (water, waste and fuel) then you need to remove the entire deck !
While the deck is off you can install all the big items such as tanks, engine, electrical and water systems etc so that's a bonus, it would also make it easy to put in bulkheads etc !
This really depends on just how sound the hull is though, it may look fine at first glance (and probably is) but you will have to get a professional opinion to be certain.
Your estimate of £10 K to get it in the water might be doable but that could easily double and forget the one year guess, it will be more like 3 or 4 !
My advice would be to look for something that's actually in the water rather than on the hard and just about ready to go, only needing some finishing touches. You probably won't get your dream boat that way but you'll be out sailing and that's more important ! 👍

That Victory 40 is a huge project and a definite money pit. I would say that you could have a nice boat worth $50-$60K if you have a shop, tools, a year to work on the boat full time, the requisite skills and $100K to spend on the boat. If you don't have the shop and tools, you can add $30-$40K.

Complete deck replacement I would imagine not to mention all the other things needed doing. Way more than £15k to put this right and a good 2-3 years I would say. Huge potential but if you want to go sailing anytime soon then I would pass. As for the S&S 42 that sounds very exciting. High quality boat and as you say, built like a brick outhouse. Looking forward to that one. I totally respect you sleeping in your car and I have done the same, albeit bigger than a mini. Hey Mark…
Coming from a guy who completed a first class , thorough refit of a vagabond 42 a few years back, I probably would find another yacht that might appeal to a broader buying pool…just from an economics standpoint…but I understand how important it is to have a passion for the one you want …there is no replacing the yacht that you love and admire the whole time you’re with her…
I think you could find a very fine 35-40 ft yacht that wouldn’t require gutting or rebuilding the interior, replacing all running and standing rigging, or even have to repower for under 30 k….( u s dollars )…
Check out the young sun 35 that is posted on YachtWorld that is located in rio dulce’ Guatemala …I’m pretty sure that most of the important expensive upgrades are done well on this yacht, and the work completed is worth we’ll more than what they are asking for whole boat…
    Just one example…

The victory 40s are great design, I have friends that restored one from a barn, been dismantled... took 5 very busy years to get on water, although no repairs needed. They're now enjoying 1st winter in Caribbean, though craned ashore, for hurricane season. This one you saw, will consume everything, way too much to invest, years and £Ks. Life is too precious, unless you prefer the restoration work over cruising. .
Btw, avoid teak decks like plague, thousands potential leaks, screws ... and most have grp substrate, sandwich wood core, that'll be mouldering mush, when screws leak. I've just stripped off a classic Vagabond 47, had to not only rip off teak, but then the grp substrate, the mushy plywood core, then reconstruct with divinycell type core, lots and lots epoxy, biax, fairing, then synthetic teak. Massive task, and expense.

That Van de Stadt is indeed a beautiful shaped hull but given the neglect it should be given away to someone to renovate. 10,000 quid they are dreaming. Absolute nightmare re-build. Dont touch it.

I have followed the project with your catamaran and you did a fantastic job with it but as a round the world sailor it would not be a safe option. I have owned, renovated and sailed more than 20 sailboats between 20 to 60 feet over 45 years and my experiences and good advice are:
    1. Only two materials are good materials, aluminum and solid fiberglass. Never teak deck and never balsa about distance. The keel should preferably be long and lead.
    2. The mast can be both aluminum and fiberglass.
    3. Size between 35 to 45 feet is the best to handle in all weathers.
    4. Used boats built between 1965 and 1985 are often the most affordable and can be refurbished at a reasonable cost.
    5. The engine must have a straight shaft and of a brand for which there are spare parts, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, eg.
6 . Reasonably priced are Allegro 32, 33, Bacchant 4, Fortissimo, which have been sailed often and have good equipment.

Pass on the victory, it’s a lot different working on a project by yourself. Might want to take a look at blue water boats in the 30 - 36 range especially if you think you will be solo sailing. I’ve been following the golden globe race (many boats already dropped out and one sank) but it might be useful reading up on why those skippers chose their boats.

Great video Mark. I agree with you about the hull shape, it’s beautiful. I’m firmly in the “Avoid” camp on this one. I think you’d be far better off buying something that can hit the water with right away. Even with such a boat, you can guarantee you’d still have a ton of projects to work on, but at least you’d be able to get some sailing done too. Best of luck with your boat shopping!

I bought an 11 metre steel Van De Stadt 2 years ago and have been living on board pretty much full time since then.
I under estimated the amount of work involved and hadn't planned on ripping out the entire interior - which I have now done. Now I have a shoe-string budget - without the shoe or the string!
However, I made my choice and I am not looking back.

Great to see the video still going Mark! I would give the victory a wide berth - you’ll need many 10s thousands of pounds and hours to re fit it. The £37k one online would probably be a better prospective. It’ll be interesting to see the Sparkman. Exciting times!

If you want to find the best prices on a sailing yacht and cheaper prices for materials. You need to come over here to the states. That boat your looking at would be a endless money pit. You'd basically be building a brand new boat.

Could be a nice boat, but I'd put the value at what the engine is worth - a truly massive amount of work - decks up, a new sub deck, bulkheads and fit out. I'm excited to see the S&S - the yachting equivalent of Rolls Royce in terms of hull design.

Do it, we bought a Van de Stadt Andromeda 50 in 2020 for 15000 in Greece and ne to rebuild the deckboards and interiour. Not the easiest job while living and working in Germany, but at least we haven't even begun yet. Well, we are currently core renovating a house, so no time and money to spare. But next year, it's all about our One-Of Van de Stadt!
Same story with me, saw the picture of the hull, fell in love, couldn't really sleep and next day we called to organize a trip to Greece. Totally worth it, best vacation and buy we ever did.

I was cringing when you were looking at that boat. Like the others say, it should be free, but then it just wouldn't be worth it. It would swallow money. When I was looking at what you would like to do, many years ago. I was looking at Vancouvers (good blue water sailors). The Sailing Brothers (on you tube) seem to rate their Rival. I would also look at Sadlers. You don't need a big boat to be Ocean going. Sadlers were foam filled so in theory are unsinkable. It also makes the boat quite stiff (less flexing) and warm. I currently have an ETAP34. Etaps are unsinkable and can actually be sailed full of water. I love it. Fast and well insulated. Good for Scotland where I live. Good luck in your search

There are plenty of fish in the sea and plenty of ships upon her. Keep your spirits high and your eyes on the Horizon and she'll come to you....
She is a beaut, but there are better projects out there that will require less work, time and money and, therefore get you on the water faster, which is the goal. The basic hull layup and proportions seem good. Anything over "40 feet" and you have to start paying more for slips in marinas and stuff.
I suppose, you'll have to decide if you want to go the wooden boat route, or focus more on fiberglass. If you could do a Wharram from scratch, wood might be the way, but I would probably go with FG for its durability and ease of future repair. Sailors aren't shipwrights, and that's ok. You can always build your second boat from scratch ;) Not to mention the fact that finding proper timber would be very difficult and expensive and you'd have to buy/build an small woodworking shop. It would be super fun...one day.

    • @cornishhh
      @cornishhh ปีที่แล้ว

Wharrams are designed for building in sheet materials. Fiberglass gains its strength in a mould from being curved. It's best to design for one material or the other.

there are a ton of bluewater capable boats 28 to 35. I would be looking at that size if I were you. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, cheaper at marinas and easier to solo sail, and most likely in better condition to get sailing on etc. etc.

Worth 10k if the seller pays YOU 10k. You are looking at years of work much of it beyond your experience never mind the cost. There is so much out there for sale that buying something a bit more expensive that is on the water would be a better choice if you want to go sailing.
As you can see this was someone else’s project and they quit.
