This video was originally released for my Patrons & later made available for public viewing. If you enjoy what I do, please consider joining my Patreon community for much more in-depth content & community activities. In this video I'm sharing some book recommendations for working with the folkloric Devil through the lens of folk magic, trad craft and animism. These do not necessarily apply to the modern LHP* approaches. I share books in English and in Polish, as well as explain why I think it's important to always look for local sources about these spirits. * LHP refers to "left hand path". This terms exists in the context of "right hand path" and "left hand path", where the "right hand path" is that of attainment of unity with God as the ultimate goal VS "left hand path" is that of attainment of personal godhood as the ultimate goal. This terminology mostly refers to modern and/or ceremonial magic practices and has nothing to do with folk magic, traditional witchcraft and animism. The reason why I'm mentioning this at all is because often times when people see the Devil being discussed, there is an assumption it may have something to do with philosophies such as Satanism or the Typhonian Order. These are different types of practices which are rooted in different sets of beliefs, not related to the approach that's being discussed in the video above.
I love how you explain on some examples what you mean e.g. by including legends in your craft. Many people who are already knowledgable tend to ommit that part, because they think others also know it all and well, I don't xD "Żywoty diabłów polskich" is such a hilarious read, I had so much fun reading it. It felt a bit like Sienkiewicz wrote something on the topic :D
Apparently there is a new revised edition of Between the Devil and the Host by Michael Ostling published in April 2024 that's significantly less pricey than first edition in case anyone is interested.
Excellent recommendations. I'm also a huge fan of Roger's work and have incorporated so much of his folk craft into my 30+ years of practice. Also, I find reading Shani Oates almost intolerable. I feel like she uses a thesaurus for every single word to deliberately make her works as unenjoyable as possible.
The Clovenstone Workings, if utilized with seriousness and authentic devotion to the spirits mentioned will bring monumental shifts, and relational connections to the spirit world, that has been my experience, a little bit scary at times to be honest. I am extremely delighted to hear about your Polish book recommendations. Thank you!
Thanks, J💕 One thing I always enjoy about your book reviews is your recommendations for the order in which they should be read to build upon the knowledge.
Thank you so much for sharing these!! I'm actually currently reading The Witches' Devil and I agree, Roger Horne is an amazing writer. I'll have to check out some of these other books. Hail the Old One! 🤘🖤
Great list of book recommendations. I own a few of the one's you shown. But their all lovely. I'm definitely more LHP but I love mixing in local folklore whenever I can.
Wonderful recommendations thank you - I've read plants of the devil and it def inspired me to work with the Devil - I do adore Corine Boyer's work - but I'm just starting to work with the folkloric Devil myself - the order of the books really helps - I read Kelden's The Witches Sabbat and it was a great toe-dip as well. 💜I'd love to hear more about the ways you work with the Devil and what your practice with the Devil looks like - if you're happy to share. Xx
