    The Clayton, NM charger is open now!
    Also, you should definitely have taken that roof rack off for this trip - that's like 20-30 miles of range right there.

    I see Tesla have a permit submitted for an eight stall supercharger at Clayton NM to bridge the gap between Amarillo and Trinidad. At least they are aware of the gap and need for another supercharger location.

    • @jshanks
      @jshanks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That charger in Clayton, NM will make it a breeze (pun intended). The drive from Colorado Springs to Austin for Fully Charged 2020 (February) was difficult. I had to do more of the New Mexico route (Las Vegas, NM, Santa Rosa, NM, etc) on that trip due to high winds and general range anxiety. I am not one to drive slow. That Clayton, NM charger can't come soon enough. I may be driving that way in the next month or so. I hope it is operational by then.

      @EIon Musk That one in Clayton should fix that one gap. But we desperately need some between Dallas and Northwest Arkansas. Daughter goes to U of Arkansas. The route planner take you from Dallas to OKC then thru Tulsa. Which turns my 4.5 hour trip into 7+. Lot of folks from Dallas area have kids in school up there. And also go there for business in Bentonville with Walmart. But I had to take my ICE car to be able to have the range with my MYP. Love the car! But have that one travel gap that keeps me from using it for that trip.

      We should thank Elon for more superchargers out here in the West. I live in NM, and there are very long drives across the West. Big states. Yes, there are many large wind farms here, in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. Lots of wind out here. Also in NM they are building large sun solar farms in the next few years. And lots of people have solar panels on their houses. NM is trying hard to be more green. And the government promised 50 more charging stations in the state next year.

    • @Duxa_

      The point is that he is doing it on purpose by going faster. Like going 90Mph to burn through it to get as low as possible. If he went 10mph slower he'd gain about 30 miles of range, which means hed be pulling in with like 10%.

    I’d get rid of those wheels really fast. They are definitely killing the range combined with the wider 245-series tires. I wish Tesla would offer a factory option 18” aero wheel set that would fit the Performance hubs. It’s crazy they can’t modify their casting to include a little centering ring.

    Love the videos Kyle. I bought my Tesla Model S 2014 P85D because you made everything look easy. I flew to Seattle from Des Moines Iowa to pick up the used car and drive it home. Everything went well except when I charged at my first supercharger, it locked up and the car wouldn’t charge until the car was linked to me and Tesla said it would be 3-5 days for that to happen. I happened to run into an employee that works at Tesla and he was able to help me link my car with Tesla in minutes. Something I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk about on TH-cam. 1900 miles was a breeze driving home thanks to you and your informative videos !!! • @awo1fman
      @awo1fman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a chicken and egg thing... they don't put charge stations where they are most needed and then claim they aren't needed because nobody could go that way if they wanted to. Then they put the fast chargers in metropolitan areas where people stupidly use them for daily charging instead of charging at home or work like they should. Then they wonder why EV adoption doesn't take off the way they think it should. It's less of a problem in the States and Europe, but in Australia the fast charging infrastructure still isn't even started yet. You're confined to a very few routes between the 5 eastern capitol cities and if you want to go anywhere else you're completely out of luck.

    • @awo1fman
      @awo1fman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennislyon5412 The great thing about EVs is that if you're really determined nearly anything is possible. After all, if there's a house or building there's almost always electricity, and you can charge from any wall outlet. But most people aren't that determined and are in more of a hurry to get where they're going, and the average consumer wants to know they can just hop in and go anywhere, any time without having to plan charging stops or rely on the hospitality of strangers.

    • @DerekDavis213

    Be nice if the navigation system could tap into the internet for current wind speed and direction along the route. That information could be used to give a better near real time idea of the arrival percent remaining. On a recent trip, with a 40MPH head wind (guess), I chose to draft off three different big rigs over a 90 mile stretch instead of driving 45MPH on the interstate with traffic blowing by at 85MPH. I think drafting was safer than going 40MPH in this particular case (45MPH might be the lower legal limit on the interstate?). BTW, TACC with its radar made drafting very easy but I was very attentive at all times. Trucks draft off each other all the time. I am aware of the risks of drafting but sometimes you need weigh the risks.

  • @davidhall9127
    @davidhall9127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really see how the mileage the Teslas can get depending on location of super chargers, quality of chargers, the wind, speed you drive, features you use inside the car, and the mileage between chargers affect your overall experience and comfort to reach the next charger.
    You pay quite a price for these cars but must factor in a plethora of issues to make it to the next charger. Not many of the same issues exist for gas powered vehicles that can usually exceed mileage attainable for most Teslas at less stops and less time to refuel.
    I like the Teslas a lot but until the super chargers are more plentiful they appear to be less of a road car due to the number of stops that must be made and the length of time taken at each stop. That needs to improve for me to seriously consider paying their cost for cars that have those issues when driving long distances.

    I really don't know all that much about battery technology, but I have come to understand that lithium batteries don't like to be fully charged, and they don't like to be fully spent. I understand why you are loathe to charge your cars above 80%, but what I don't understand is that you frequently let them get below 20%, and even under 10%. Is this good for the batteries? I would assume that keeping it somewhere between 20% and 80% is ideal for most road trips, and letting it drop below 10% would erode battery capacity over time. Am I wrong?

    • @MrKlawUK
      @MrKlawUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      20-80 is good for day to day travel. 0-100 is ok for road trips (why have the capacity if you can’t use it) but don’t do it all the time, and don’t supercharge all the time. These extreme youtubers that appear to do 1000 mile roadtrips every day aren’t representative of normal use. Even Kyle is probably doing daily miles 75-80% of the time

      @@OutofSpecMotoring Kyle, I made the same trip in my 2018 M3dm from Amarillo to Trinidad in 2019 against a headwind and decided to get a 1-hr L2 charge at the RV park in Caputin, NM from their NEMA 14-50 outlet. That boost allowed me to drive close to normal highway speed to Trinidad. As I recall, although I arrived with ~3% SoC and could probably made it without charging for an hour for $15, a tow would have been much more of a hassle.

      Some people charge up in Dumas at the Hampton Inn or stop at the RV park in Dalhart (the city RV park I believe) or along the way for some juice. Maybe Dumas could be a planned stop so you could charge up overnight. That's a tough stretch! Good luck!

  • @JerryWhalin

    Lots of people do this route. See people in the North Texas Tesla Owners group constantly asking if it's possible to make the Amarillo to Trinidad stretch. A supercharger is definitely needed in between. One shows on the Tesla website in Clayton NM as opening in 2020 but apparently it's been saying that for years.

  • @KyleBrightman

    Kyle, based on your experience with the Taycan 4S and its ability to at least match its range rating at reasonably high speeds, do you think it could have completed that long stretch either direction? It’s pretty surprising that the Model 3 Performance fell that short of its rating, even considering the ambient conditions and 40 mph average for a good portion of it.

      @@davebest5624 Actually Colorado has great mild weather with just a few times a year where it gets bad. Typically in the foothills when it snows the roads are plowed and dry within a day or 2. I moved here from Michigan where you may not see actual payment for weeks, and the snow sticks around even longer.

    Im assuming WitchWitch took 20minutes, so it took you 5 hours to go 228 miles, thats roughly 45Mph. How in the heck is it 285Wh/Mi still? Elevation and Wind? Id expect you to get closer to 200Wh/Mi at those speeds.

    When you're "hyper-miling" do you just follow the Tesla pop-up saying keep your speed below X to reach your destination or do you just watch your energy graph? I can't image the pop-up would get you in with 0%.

    • @Duxa_
      @Duxa_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pop up tries to get you in at 5%, if it estimates ud get there below 5% it says you wont reach destination. I did a 1400mile trip recently in a Y and tested this.
