Which Sim Racing Wheel Is Right For You: GT Edition

  • With me in the studio I have 7 GT wheels, and I've owned a few more for good measure. So, I'm going to do my best to talk through the important points, and the pros and cons of each of these types of wheel, similar wheels, and hopefully we'll all come out the other side having learned something in addition to having aged by around 8 minutes. Now, this isn't a "what am bestest wheel" video, more an overview of what you should probably look for.
Thanks again to www.raceanywhere.co.uk/ who let me play with the Sim Line wheels in order to get my feedback on them. I won't be making dedicated review videos, because I'm trying to limit the number of those I do, but for what it's worth, I think the Lambo/Audi wheel and the Porsche are great products, especially at the price point. That's it, that's the review!

G29 user here. I genuinely like the FFB from my wheel and honestly, the only reason I would be upgrading is for the aesthetics. However, I'd love a decent set of pedals, but I don't have the money for that kind of stuff.

@@hileutewie I've gotten really serious in sim racing recently and just now upgraded from my Logitech to DD I would highly suggest looking into a load cell pedal as it makes the biggest difference in performance mostly by consistency and ability to modulate braking easier I upgraded pedals and kept my Logitech for a while and gained a full 2 seconds in time on most track with the pedal upgrade

As the saying goes : A Chris Haye video a day keeps the blues at bay. Lovely video, mate. I bet you have as much fun making them as we do watching them. Loving this new style and presentation. Truly reflects that you’re just happy making videos that you enjoy making.
Back to the topic at hand, I’d probably love to have one of those semi open wheels, or D-wheels for GT racing since that’s all I sim race these days. But unfortunately, my wallet begs to differ that I should first prioritise getting a gaming pc that can actually play ACC optimally. For now, the t300 ferrari alcantara wheel will have to do. Not to say that I’m not enjoying it, it’s a great wheel and wheel base when you stop comparing gears all the time. Besides, what more could I ask for since I’ve already added thrustmaster’s T-LCM load cell brake pedal set.

And here I was, falling in love with the idea of getting the Turn Racing r20, and Chris comes baring in with an unexpected GT rim video and some new wheel maker I hadn't heard of! Take responsibility, Mr Haye, and tell me how that Lambo wheel compares to the r20 with Turn's button plate! It's fifty US dollars more and comes with two more buttons and an extra encoder, but I've heard only great things about Turn.

As per usual great content thank you. Although i may slightly disagree on a certain few issues one point i would like to highlight is the following, Wheel feel in conjunction with button placement. The wheels in the review: people may have noticed in some cases buttons were further placed behind the wheel rim itself. this can in some cases make it more challenging to press those buttons in the heat of racing. This can reduce the overall experience by the user and in cases de-rate the wheels ability to perform with that particular user. Cost is always a concern but imo opinion if your having fun on a $100 setup that's all that counts. ive seen 50k setups they look amazing and have there place too as it shows the dedication enthusiasts are willing to go.

Everytime i see cool gear i wanna buy it, but end up restraining myself because i will probably not make good use of it.
im trying my best to learn this hobby properly, but its really difficult and everytime i make my car spin, frustration hits me again x.x

The one thing that you didn't mention is the dual clutch paddle option. As far as I can tell, the only GT style wheels that offer this as an option (upgrade) is Fanatec and either the Ascher F64 (possibly their button boxes can add them, but not sure how difficult that is).
I realize that the dual clutch isn't always an option on most GT cars, and are less useful with rolling start races, but some titles and race series put you into standing starts, where the dual clutch can be handy. Any feedback on how hard it is to modify say an SRC, GSI, Cube Control, etc, wheel to include dual clutch?

Hmm a review of the wheel conversion kits like for the T300 wheel or the TM Open wheel addon.
Swapped my used modified G27 (GTEye springs+replaced potentiometers with the 3drap kit) for a used T500RS set and so the topic of the Video was really interesting.
Especially as modding the brake pedal to my taste and requirements (sadly I can't hardmount them) was a bit tricky, given that I want a progressive feel and a pedal roughly as firm or slightly firmer than the GTEYE s but not enough to send the Pedals sliding.

  • @notdreadyet33

That same Turn rim is my primary rim for ACC, it's been great.
I'm always surprised by how many people use the 270MM Fanatec Formula V2 for ACC. The only reason I can think of is it is the nicest mid-range all in one wheel they have. The McLaren wheel is relatively plastic and cheap, while the M4 rim is as much 4 to 5 times as much.
Fanatec would be smart to release a GT all in one on the same level as their Formula wheel IMO

    • @joris818
      @joris818 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I started out with the Fanatec WRC wheel. I mainly ride ACC so I decided I wanted more of a formula style wheel. The Fanatec clubsport has been my main wheel for the last couple of months and it's a great step up from the WRC wheel, however, I'm starting to realize it's actually a little to small. I'm now in the process of replacing my CSL DD for a VRS DFP and therefore choosing a new wheel. For now, the choice is between a Turner and a Polsimer setup. However, I might treat myself and buy a Eau Rouge P1 :-D
      Great video !!

Hi Chris, thanks for another video, great idea for the content. I have DD1 F1 wheel PS4/5 but I always had T300 F599x alcantara edition. I play ASsetto Corsa Competizione but I want to try all different street cars in Assetto Corsa and also try a rally game. Obviously I can’t enjoy it with F1 wheel. My plan was to disassemble DD1 F1 wheel (the blue one) and add F599x wheel using podium hub to DD1. You meanthat will not work? What happens when you add F599X wheel to podium hub and DD1. Is there reduced FFB or there’s none, do shifters work? (I haven’t got a gear shifter). Many thanks!

Chris I’m wondering if you are aware of a video comparing a number of direct drive wheel bases? I am now ready to purchase my first dd base and I am aware of Fanatec’s new $350 base but for my next purchase I am hoping for a base that gives me the best force feedback experience or rather the most realistic representation of what a game might provide. I found one vid from sim racing garage but they compared 3 and I was only familiar with the one that took 3rd place. I am guessing that it would be difficult and expensive to bring a current selection of dd bases together for this comparison. Is there a generally excepted brand that is currently considered the best racing experience?

I've always been that guy that appriciate things that replicate the real counter part, for an example, I prefer the Simline Porsche wheel over the Fanatec one, just because it has the raw finish to it, it's just like it should be, no more, no less.
That's the reason to why I never got myself to buy any of the licensed Fanatec wheels either, they simply don't look right, they might have the shape, they might have the right diameter and so on, but there's always a compromise to fit that LCD screen for an example.
They add unnecessary things like a extra frame, to fit things like the rev lights, TC/ABS lights, which has never been a part of the real life counter part.
I understand that people enjoy this kind of stuff, and I understand that people take advantage of the info they can get out of it, and I got nothing against it, whatever floats your goat I guess.
But for me, it got to look right. And the irony here, is that I'm using VR, I'm not even looking at the wheel when using it, like at all. 😂

Chris says T300 is not compatible with Fanatec, I have DD1. So what is the issue? He hasn’t got back to me. Would you know? I upgraded from T300 (F599XX) to DD1 ps4 and need round wheel, so I thought I could use T300 rim.

I think a lot of people spend far too much money on fancy wheels. Completely unnecessary but you like what you like I guess. For me it's just a wheel and I'm happy with the one one that came with my wheelbase. I drive all cars with the same wheel, if I need faster initial turn in I do it thru the sim software. I think size becomes an issue with more powerful setups, even 6Nm gets pretty tiring via a 280mm wheel. You can add magnetic shifter mods to just about everything that doesn't have it it out of the box and in some cases the mod can also be used to shorten the travel on the paddle should you wish. The stuff that is crammed into it the more likely it will go wrong especially when the manufacturer overtightens the screws. Yes, you know who you are. Fix up.

I think there's a problem when the racing wheel (the whole setup) costs more than a decent Mountain bike.
