    I prune my crepe myrtles in later winter and late winter when plants start to push there little leaf buds before spring I take the cuttings, they are dormant at the moment but should see some starting to grow when they wake up . I’m told they are a very hardy plant. Fingers crossed

    The thing I like about Natchez is that they naturally want to stay narrow at the base and only branch out and get fountain shaped when they get tall enough to park cars under and walk under. We saw them at Lewis Ginter in Richmond, VA, where they shaded a woodland path and benches. We bought some for our parking area and to shade our patio. Other varieties are naturally bushy at the bottom and still others are naturally columnar. I think it’s best to work with the plant’s natural inclination.

    Nice job. When I do my clippings I always strip all the foliage off of mine and just stick the the cuttings. I've been doing mine for years like that it seems like they really take off a lot quicker. But awesome job 👍

    I wonder if you can tell me something about the c m roots? Last year i planted a dwarf purple c m about 2 feet high temporary during the month of Aug here in NYC. A month or so ago, I hired a 'phony' landscaper, ( found out later ) to transplant into a sunnier exposure. Without my prescence, he yanked out the c m ( according to my neighbor ) and planted it. Its over a month, no sign of life, but I do see some green as I scratch a branch or so. ..so I suspect its going through shock and I have been watering it daily, until finally I decided to uproot it and check the roots, if it even had any. It had lots of roots, but i can't tell by looking at them if they are dead or not. They certainly not white. Is there a way to confirm those roots? BTW, its now the last week of May if that should make any difference.

    • @GrowNewPlants
      @GrowNewPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hard to tell by roots, not always white, if you have green under bark it’s still alive, give it a little time, may not have been the move but the artic freeze in February

  • @RickyBremme
    @RickyBremme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have a question. Thanks to your videos I can get the cuttings to the point where they start growing new buds (great success rate if I plant the cuttings without leaves). But my problem comes after that. I live in a tropical country, so plenty of rain and sun the whole year (no root hormone needed). After they start developing the new buds (new buds start showing after 15 days) and let's say two weeks after that, they start dying.
    I'm trying to figure what am I doing wrong? I don't use special soil (cos it's hard to get here) mostly I use good soil from my garden. I'm thinking I need to incorporate fungicide to the soil, but that's all I can think of. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    How long Do I have to keep them in shade?
    Thank you.

    • @GrowNewPlants
      @GrowNewPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Do they actually have roots when you look at them, sometimes they will grow on top even if the don't have roots yet, Keep buds trimmed off, need energy for roots

      If you are doing softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings they need to be in spring or early to mid summer, They need time to get rooted well before the weather turns cold. You can do hardwood cuttings in the winter. I have never done them but I will probably give it a shot this year

      Cut below stems about 1/4" to 1/2 " below the nodes in a upwards cut, scratch the stems a bit at nodes and at any leaves stripped at the bottom that will be under the soil (always clean your prunes as not to transfer any diseases mold ect. I use rubbing alcohol.)
      This usually works for me on other plants. However, I always try to say a prayer for the plant. That's me 😊
