The final minutes of the episode presented something that I believe is the strongest overarching theme: The transition from fantasy to reality. The final scene was framed in a way that presents Mephone as a kid playing in a sandbox; creating and imagining whatever fantasy comes to mind. But every kid has to leave the playground eventually and go home. By extension, the little works you lose yourself in vanish, too. II was just Mephone’s emotionally tumultuous trip to the playground.
I feel like the theme of some kind of generational trauma/bad influence has been shown the most clearly in the latest episodes, its so interesting to me because it does tie with the theme of real and fake and it raises so many questions. "Do they see them as real people? " "are they real people?" "What qualifies them to be treated as such?" Where does the line between simulation and reality end? Toilet experienced this first hand...
AGHHH I always thought Taco's apology paralleled Balloon's in a way. Two character's who went into an apology accepting the good, refusing to accept that sometimes apologies aren't accepted. I love how similar those two are. The only difference was Taco got much closer to succeeding with her plot while Balloon got eleminated.
i never saw the apology theme, i considered a lot of things but i never thought to connect the apologies to the overaching theme. i thought it was just tryna get in some character development and stuff while the apocalypse was going on, this is actually really interesting. also the fact you were actually considering ending like this is scary bro that wouldve been crazy we could never recover... anyway im actually kinda scared for act III now some of the stuff you said sounded pretty ominous
I knew Mic and Taco stuff not only needed to happen during the apocalypse, but it had to be relevant in order for the film's structure and pacing to justify devoting time to it. So Taco is how we learn about "inanimatification" in the first place (through the attempted Pickle apology), and Mic seeks her out to complete Baseball's circle of protection. And while the circle does fail of course, Taco is the one to notice the video game on the TV, which is what brings Mic, MePad, and MePhone to noticing the wire and ultimately Toilet. Everything has to matter and be earned.
the whole episode felt like it was foreshadowing Bot. their absence in both this and the previous episodes felt conspicuous. the fact that they were the only contestant not to be part of melife (explicitly stated in episode 8 of III, since test tube had to save bot because they couldn't be brought back through melife), and then fan saying "we definitely didn't forget [about bow], but thats a story for another time", and then suitcase at the end saying "everyone on this show whos not a machine is part of melife", definitely felt like bot was going to be a major player in the finale. also my insane conspiracy theory about that line: cobs is a robot. calling it now folks
I get the feeling that Bot is going to be the first person MePhone will formally apologise to. Not only are they the last surviving contestant, but they're also the only one MePhone didn't spawn into existence. However, he did spawn everyone else. Fan, Test Tube, Cabby, Goo - all of these people have played quintessential parts in Bot's life, and all of them are mere lies. MePhone unknowingly fabricated their entire world, even if he never saw their construction coming. And yet, Bot would very likely forgive MePhone. It wouldn't instantly alleviate their now warped perception of him, but they would now be aware that he's remorseful for his actions and that he wants to make amends. Besides, after witnessing everything that's happened, with Cobs, 3GS and the Shimmers, it'll make a lot more sense to Bot how they and MePhone share the brunt of being created for an intended purpose they didn't agree with, and wanting to rise above that. Except for that where MePhone kept trying to run away from his problems and avoid telling truth out of fear that nobody would understand, Bot wasn't afraid to vent about being put in that position.
As saddening as it sounds. You do have to admit that Taco and Knife kinda deserved the responses they got when apologising. It would be nice if Pickle and Taco got back together but then again, Friendships quite literally take time to build up and seconds to destroy, and it’d especially hurt if you learned that they were pretending to be your friend for their own gain. And while it would be nice if Knife had truly shown that he’d grown as a person, recovery or not, he still picked on Marshmallow just because and is tryjng to apologise over a decade later. Honestly, I think it’s more interesting the way it is despite it being fairly upsetting in some perspectives
This was so good. I had the same thought, and although youre literally the writer, and likely intentionally used this theme, i love the way you explain it as a fan. I mean- you ARE a fan. Thats what i really find interesting about this, youre explaining it through the perspective of a viewer, and the theme just comes together so well. The underlying theme/idea of apologizes was so interesting and perfectly done. But yeah, mephone4 definitely has some apologies to be made. I just hope everyone’s gonna be okay. (I know they arent, and im so scared)

2:47 NO WAY I ACTUALLY DID NOTICE THIS!! But seriously, Mephone's forced apology just shows how paranoid he is of the whole situation. But in all seriousness, I loved this analysis, it showed me new perspectives, and confirmed many things that I saw. The test tube bit qas something I realized after a rewatch. I loved that emphasis, it was really powerful, especially for fan favourites like her and ying yang. I really loved this, so thank you Brian for going more indepth in this ep! If this wouldve been the end I can't say I wouldn't have been satisfied. I loved this so much, the feeling I feel in this episode are unlike no other and I have to say that is the type of story everyone yearns to really make. So thank you Brian and the whole II team for this.
That was something I was thinking not long after 17 is there seemed to be a pattern of the characters either in a situation where one should apologize but it doesn’t happen(OJ gets killed before he can say anything on Paper’s vent and to a lesser extent the beginning of 17) or the apology fails in some way. Pickle doesn’t accept Taco’s apology, Tissues does before MePhone can get the words out, Knife tosses aside MePhone’s message, Marshmallow rejects Knife’s apology. Season 3 had themes of identity and family being prominent so I assumed this was also a theme for either season 2 or just the movie, I just didn’t narrow it down. The MePhone breakdown in the beginning assured me I wasn’t just grasping at straws here
As for the if it’s real, I say it became that way. In the beginning perhaps they were just ocs made for the game without much outside of what they were made to be. But overtime they grew sentience, attachments, goals. While they usually played by MePhone’s rules, they also began valuing other things. Would Fan and Test Tube have built Bot who isn’t attached to MeLife at all if they were still just fake? Would Marshmallow have quit or Fan, OJ, Paintbrush, and Test Tube in ep 15 specifically give up the chance to come back for S3 for the sake of something they care about if they were still only made for the game? Would a couple of these people form relationships with each other beyond alliances if that was the case? And would they mourn the others this much, especially after most learn about their creation? Especially Fan and Paintbrush where the former was in a depression and accepted a smile to be with Test Tube in some form while the latter finally expressed negative emotions in a healthy manner by sobbing over their friends. Even if Cobs and in a way MePhone didn’t see them as real because they weren’t in the traditional sense, they did become as real and in a way more real than them
I love theme of apoliges and who deserves them and who doesn't, when I first watched the episode I felt like the contestants and mepad where a bit harsh on mephone 4 but this really opened my eyes and saw that yeah they where right to feel that way about mephone
Aside from the analysis for Act III of II2 Movie, iw would be very harsh and cruel if Cobs were to give MePhone4 a factory reset where he'll never remember forever the show as well as all the contestants he made. It's very harsh that with the factory reset concept into the episode, there's nothing to solve rather than just to mourn of all the concepts that a machine made just for amusement. Cobs could have easily won if he were to put MePhone4 on factory reset and it's too late, everything will be gone forever, the show, the contestants, even all the MePhone4's memories in general. That would be the harshest idea that will be brought up into an episode, that with this concept the show will also be forgotten for at around 10 years time. Overall, this analysis was intriguing and informative, I just wish I never mention the factory reset concept to begin with again.

This was a nice distraction from the outside world right now. Thank you Brian! It was a very fun video to watch, and I loved how you put in clips to put the emphasis on your points even more.
The II 18 trailer had Cobs saying "You know I forgive you, right?" Forgive him for what? MePhone didn't do anything wrong to him. In fact, he only created II to get distract himself from Cobs. What did Cobs do? Create a device that evaporated all that MePhone made. Cobs shouldn't forgive at all. He should instead apologize, which won't be expected for a selfish unaccountable person. But after watching the video, I had another though, what if Cobs was the reason MePhone denies to apologize to people? Maybe Cobs had dismissed his apologies, or didn't forgive him when he did in the past, or Cobs simply never taught him to apologize. Thus, this causes MePhone to believe apologies are worthless, and that is why he would say something else, or nothing at all, instead when his peers require a proper apology from him. Wonder how external justisce (everything getting erased) would change his thoughts, if he had anyone else to talk to. Wow, how one line made me say a lot! 😅
I love how as the writer, you analyse like a fan and that's what I admire most because you are able to provide both perspectives. I strive to be a writer who incorpates heavy themes like these effectively in the future!
Once again, great episode, honestly when inanimate insanity was first created i thought mephone did create the contestants, to which i was correct, but even then, the reveal of it was still extremely surprising, but I still do wonder why suitcase and knife got so easily damaged after one blow from each, is it because mephone made them weak on purpose so he could keep recovering them like an endless cycle?
I must say the way that this episode ended was PERFECT. It made it seem like it was the total end of everything with a bunch of well-hidden loose ends and possible theories.

The show has a lot of depth to it with the story of mephone4 and steve cobs YET there’s still so much that can be interpreted when you look back at the show’s prior episodes I’ve loved II for quite literally forever now and honestly this final straw is great 🎉
Im so horrified they're gonna leave us on a bad ending still or make it like mephone realizes he doesnt have to rely on the contestants and mephone gets a happy ending but theyre gone forever 😭
one thing i personally took away from the episode, aside from all the points you mentioned here, is that whether or not something is real or fake doesn’t necessarily matter, if by the end it left a mark on you. i don’t think this is necessarily intended to be a theme really, just my personal perception. the impact the contestants had on mephone and even each other isn’t gone just because they are now gone, and the impact isn’t less meaningful simply because of the nature of their creation. mephone hasn’t suddenly hit the factory reset button because the contestants have vanished. everything he’s learned as a result of this show is burned into him, whether he likes it or not.
I’ve been in the osc for almost 5 years now and inanimate insanity has been my favourite series so far. I absolutely loved this analysis on the episode and honestly would love to see more of though I know you’re probably busy with a lot of stuff since this is a big project. I’ve never seen myself being dedicated to writing, though I have written a few incomplete story’s. I’m always inspired by you to continue writing and be able to create such an interesting storyline. You and the whole crew have worked so hard on this and I’m so excited and nervous to see how the show will end. ^_^
hey, brian! it's the guy who asked the inanimate insanity christianity question! i'm going to put a general cw on my comment for talks of ab*se even though i don't go too in depth about it. frankly, my favorite trope is "controlled realities based around a show," some of my favorite media (generation loss; the social experiments, hfjone, the truman show, tadc, even inanimate insanity!) falls into that trope and as an ab*se victim it can really ring true to my experience. you're trapped, and you have little to no control over your situation. you don't have any autonomy and you're meant to stay silent. it doesn't feel like you have any hope, and you may not see a definitive way out before you get there, much like the contestants felt while they were on the show. there wasn't a way out... until there was. the themes of ab*se and potentially breaking the cycle may not have been intentional but i can definitely pick up on it. i'm not going to lie; the ending destroyed me. it hurt even more when i thought it was the actual ending. there's something that feels so hopeless about mephone going back to cobs; with his livelihood and passion project destroyed, he didn't have a choice. his autonomy was stripped away, kind of mirroring how the contestants felt. it cut pretty deep for me, actually. i was left in shambles and i was thinking about it for days afterwards. i didn't cry, but i felt empty. i didn't know how i was meant to function after watching that. i could say more but it's 5 am and i don't feel like rewatching the episode because i haven't had the best night so far, and i don't feel like destroying myself again. i hope you enjoyed reading my long and rambley thoughts on the episode and this analysis. also if nobody *actually* apologizes to paintbrush then i will SCREAM. they did NOT go through hell for 2 seasons just to be brushed off again!! thanks, brian and to the rest of the team.

With the final act coming up soon, I can safely say that this WHOLE show has been a wild ride for me. I first started watching this show front to back since the beginning of 2021, and I can’t believe that the second season is so close to finishing. The last couple of episodes have really held a special place in my heart, and I’ll be sad to see this season coming to a close, but excited to see what might unfold in the future! I’ve been wondering if the scene with the contestants dead with writing on them is actually a reflection of what MePhone thinks about himself and/or Cobs because of being abused: Always strikes out - he could never please Cobs Thinks he’s worthless - pretty obvious Must be needed - he felt the need to impress his creator and be loved Trend setter/follower - trickier one but perhaps Setter is cobs and Follower is mephone, always stuck in this cruel power dynamic And for knife and suitcase, I think he made those thinking of cobs and himself respectively: Mean, jerk, change of heart? - how MePhone saw Cobs, and how he hoped he’d change Pushover, backstabber - how he saw himself, foreshadowing his escape Also, the scene with everyone with the writing on them is so well done. The way mephone holds his head as if to block out the thoughts, and the fact the writing was definitely in his head, really suggest that all these terms relate back to his own thoughts about himself thanks to the abuse from the corn man. Mephone is such a complex character, he coincidentally always felt like the “most real” character to me, long before II16. Beautiful scene!

i love videos like this, watching the episode for the first time im so shocked by everything happening and not really picking up on whats in front of me but after hearing other peoples perspectives and rewatching i can totally get a better grasp and it just blows my mind man AHHHHHH
good analysis! I didn't think about this idea at all but it's good. I'll take my stab at a different theme I've been thinking about but never really had a particular place to write about there's this whole thing between the S3 finale and the S2 finale about protecting the idea of a person. it's more present in S3's finale but seems to have effects on S2. test tube in S3E19 says it outright that "I protected my ideas of them" in a conversation with cabby about bot. though it also extends to cabby herself in terms of how test tube saw her. however it's also present in the larger context of the characters there. throughout S3 many of the one-off characters are presented as just being the ideas they're supposed to represent, or even caricatures of them. ballpoint pen is the critic, springy is the corporate mascot, and so on. these are more expansive ideas than the stuff mephone works with in the earlier season, but they're still just their roles. however the finale goes against that and shows that many of them are able to move past the things they're supposed to do (even springy) I think with the context of S2E16, S3 in general demonstrates that mephone is moving past seeing the characters he made as just their ideas (even beyond test tube just saying it); there's bot who is not his creation who he appreciates more. however, even though he goes through all of that in S3, he isn't ready to directly confront that truth even by the end of S2 because it's all more real than S3 considering S3 is practically a staged set within a staged set. more than that though, the contestants are closer to home than S3 side characters. unfortunately the veil is lifted on S2 before mephone is able to truly come around on it all. this problem mephone has with the contestants originally being built around specific ideas ties in well with the real/not real theme of the S2 finale and the consequences are right there there are a few other minor examples of this theme I think throughout both seasons - knife protecting what he sees as suitcase's role on the grand slams (even if that's not quite how she really is), paintbrush complaining about maybe having to act in a specific way while on the show, mepad being able to see taco as more than the plot she carried out in S1, and so on, but I really like the overarching results of the theme
the main takeaway i'm getting from this analysis is how people and you respond to your mistakes, and how other people try to learn past that. like with marshmallow, she accepted paintbrush for them not being able to talk with her, but still couldn't forgive knife because of him burning her alive. when people try to apologize, they have their own little vision on how other people would respond to that, whether it be positively or negatively. and even then, there's that chance that they don't get the forgiveness they expected, for good or bad reasons. these people try to be perfect thinking that apologizing is the only thing that'll solve everything, when it's a lot more layered and complicated than that. hope most of this made sense. you really explained this a lot better than i could with funny inanimate objects. was mostly rambling it's 1am rn. zzzzz

Season 3 had themes of identity and family being prominent so I assumed this was also a theme for either season 2 or just the movie, I just didn’t narrow it down. The MePhone breakdown in the beginning assured me I wasn’t just grasping at straws here
As for the if it’s real, I say it became that way. In the beginning perhaps they were just ocs made for the game without much outside of what they were made to be. But overtime they grew sentience, attachments, goals. While they usually played by MePhone’s rules, they also began valuing other things. Would Fan and Test Tube have built Bot who isn’t attached to MeLife at all if they were still just fake? Would Marshmallow have quit or Fan, OJ, Paintbrush, and Test Tube in ep 15 specifically give up the chance to come back for S3 for the sake of something they care about if they were still only made for the game? Would a couple of these people form relationships with each other beyond alliances if that was the case? And would they mourn the others this much, especially after most learn about their creation? Especially Fan and Paintbrush where the former was in a depression and accepted a smile to be with Test Tube in some form while the latter finally expressed negative emotions in a healthy manner by sobbing over their friends. Even if Cobs and in a way MePhone didn’t see them as real because they weren’t in the traditional sense, they did become as real and in a way more real than them
I love theme of apoliges and who deserves them and who doesn't, when I first watched the episode I felt like the contestants and mepad where a bit harsh on mephone 4 but this really opened my eyes and saw that yeah they where right to feel that way about mephone
Aside from the analysis for Act III of II2 Movie, iw would be very harsh and cruel if Cobs were to give MePhone4 a factory reset where he'll never remember forever the show as well as all the contestants he made. It's very harsh that with the factory reset concept into the episode, there's nothing to solve rather than just to mourn of all the concepts that a machine made just for amusement. Cobs could have easily won if he were to put MePhone4 on factory reset and it's too late, everything will be gone forever, the show, the contestants, even all the MePhone4's memories in general. That would be the harshest idea that will be brought up into an episode, that with this concept the show will also be forgotten for at around 10 years time. Overall, this analysis was intriguing and informative, I just wish I never mention the factory reset concept to begin with again.

The II 18 trailer had Cobs saying "You know I forgive you, right?" Forgive him for what? MePhone didn't do anything wrong to him. In fact, he only created II to get distract himself from Cobs. What did Cobs do? Create a device that evaporated all that MePhone made. Cobs shouldn't forgive at all. He should instead apologize, which won't be expected for a selfish unaccountable person.
But after watching the video, I had another though, what if Cobs was the reason MePhone denies to apologize to people? Maybe Cobs had dismissed his apologies, or didn't forgive him when he did in the past, or Cobs simply never taught him to apologize. Thus, this causes MePhone to believe apologies are worthless, and that is why he would say something else, or nothing at all, instead when his peers require a proper apology from him.
Wonder how external justisce (everything getting erased) would change his thoughts, if he had anyone else to talk to.

Once again, great episode, honestly when inanimate insanity was first created i thought mephone did create the contestants, to which i was correct, but even then, the reveal of it was still extremely surprising, but I still do wonder why suitcase and knife got so easily damaged after one blow from each, is it because mephone made them weak on purpose so he could keep recovering them like an endless cycle?
tbh they probably just didnt want to draw like 5 different assets for each level of damage

one thing i personally took away from the episode, aside from all the points you mentioned here, is that whether or not something is real or fake doesn’t necessarily matter, if by the end it left a mark on you. i don’t think this is necessarily intended to be a theme really, just my personal perception. the impact the contestants had on mephone and even each other isn’t gone just because they are now gone, and the impact isn’t less meaningful simply because of the nature of their creation. mephone hasn’t suddenly hit the factory reset button because the contestants have vanished. everything he’s learned as a result of this show is burned into him, whether he likes it or not.

I’ve been in the osc for almost 5 years now and inanimate insanity has been my favourite series so far. I absolutely loved this analysis on the episode and honestly would love to see more of though I know you’re probably busy with a lot of stuff since this is a big project.
I’ve never seen myself being dedicated to writing, though I have written a few incomplete story’s. I’m always inspired by you to continue writing and be able to create such an interesting storyline. You and the whole crew have worked so hard on this and I’m so excited and nervous to see how the show will end. ^_^

i'm going to put a general cw on my comment for talks of ab*se even though i don't go too in depth about it.
frankly, my favorite trope is "controlled realities based around a show," some of my favorite media (generation loss; the social experiments, hfjone, the truman show, tadc, even inanimate insanity!) falls into that trope and as an ab*se victim it can really ring true to my experience.
you're trapped, and you have little to no control over your situation. you don't have any autonomy and you're meant to stay silent.
it doesn't feel like you have any hope, and you may not see a definitive way out before you get there, much like the contestants felt while they were on the show. there wasn't a way out... until there was.
the themes of ab*se and potentially breaking the cycle may not have been intentional but i can definitely pick up on it.
i'm not going to lie; the ending destroyed me.
it hurt even more when i thought it was the actual ending. there's something that feels so hopeless about mephone going back to cobs; with his livelihood and passion project destroyed, he didn't have a choice. his autonomy was stripped away, kind of mirroring how the contestants felt.
it cut pretty deep for me, actually. i was left in shambles and i was thinking about it for days afterwards.
i didn't cry, but i felt empty. i didn't know how i was meant to function after watching that.
i could say more but it's 5 am and i don't feel like rewatching the episode because i haven't had the best night so far, and i don't feel like destroying myself again.
i hope you enjoyed reading my long and rambley thoughts on the episode and this analysis.
also if nobody *actually* apologizes to paintbrush then i will SCREAM. they did NOT go through hell for 2 seasons just to be brushed off again!!

Thank you for making this video. It’s nice to hear an analysis from the composer of the show. I didn’t even realise Test Tube was killed early to make a point that the episode’s events were very serious.
With the final act coming up soon, I can safely say that this WHOLE show has been a wild ride for me. I first started watching this show front to back since the beginning of 2021, and I can’t believe that the second season is so close to finishing. The last couple of episodes have really held a special place in my heart, and I’ll be sad to see this season coming to a close, but excited to see what might unfold in the future!

I’ve been wondering if the scene with the contestants dead with writing on them is actually a reflection of what MePhone thinks about himself and/or Cobs because of being abused:
Always strikes out - he could never please Cobs
Thinks he’s worthless - pretty obvious
Must be needed - he felt the need to impress his creator and be loved
Trend setter/follower - trickier one but perhaps Setter is cobs and Follower is mephone, always stuck in this cruel power dynamic
And for knife and suitcase, I think he made those thinking of cobs and himself respectively:
Mean, jerk, change of heart? - how MePhone saw Cobs, and how he hoped he’d change
Pushover, backstabber - how he saw himself, foreshadowing his escape
Also, the scene with everyone with the writing on them is so well done. The way mephone holds his head as if to block out the thoughts, and the fact the writing was definitely in his head, really suggest that all these terms relate back to his own thoughts about himself thanks to the abuse from the corn man. Mephone is such a complex character, he coincidentally always felt like the “most real” character to me, long before II16. Beautiful scene!

i loved the ending to this episode so much!! the way it all ended so suddenly really hit me hard, but it felt realistic!
good analysis! I didn't think about this idea at all but it's good. I'll take my stab at a different theme I've been thinking about but never really had a particular place to write about
there's this whole thing between the S3 finale and the S2 finale about protecting the idea of a person. it's more present in S3's finale but seems to have effects on S2. test tube in S3E19 says it outright that "I protected my ideas of them" in a conversation with cabby about bot. though it also extends to cabby herself in terms of how test tube saw her. however it's also present in the larger context of the characters there. throughout S3 many of the one-off characters are presented as just being the ideas they're supposed to represent, or even caricatures of them. ballpoint pen is the critic, springy is the corporate mascot, and so on. these are more expansive ideas than the stuff mephone works with in the earlier season, but they're still just their roles. however the finale goes against that and shows that many of them are able to move past the things they're supposed to do (even springy)
I think with the context of S2E16, S3 in general demonstrates that mephone is moving past seeing the characters he made as just their ideas (even beyond test tube just saying it); there's bot who is not his creation who he appreciates more. however, even though he goes through all of that in S3, he isn't ready to directly confront that truth even by the end of S2 because it's all more real than S3 considering S3 is practically a staged set within a staged set. more than that though, the contestants are closer to home than S3 side characters. unfortunately the veil is lifted on S2 before mephone is able to truly come around on it all. this problem mephone has with the contestants originally being built around specific ideas ties in well with the real/not real theme of the S2 finale and the consequences are right there
there are a few other minor examples of this theme I think throughout both seasons - knife protecting what he sees as suitcase's role on the grand slams (even if that's not quite how she really is), paintbrush complaining about maybe having to act in a specific way while on the show, mepad being able to see taco as more than the plot she carried out in S1, and so on, but I really like the overarching results of the theme

the main takeaway i'm getting from this analysis is how people and you respond to your mistakes, and how other people try to learn past that. like with marshmallow, she accepted paintbrush for them not being able to talk with her, but still couldn't forgive knife because of him burning her alive.
when people try to apologize, they have their own little vision on how other people would respond to that, whether it be positively or negatively. and even then, there's that chance that they don't get the forgiveness they expected, for good or bad reasons. these people try to be perfect thinking that apologizing is the only thing that'll solve everything, when it's a lot more layered and complicated than that.
hope most of this made sense. you really explained this a lot better than i could with funny inanimate objects. was mostly rambling it's 1am rn. zzzzz
