Even though the Surgeon General's report on smoking was still more than 10 years in the future, throughout the 1950s cigarette companies began to fight back. @DellaStreet123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 I think the concerns about smoking, health-wise, are almost as old as smoking itself. The word "cancer stick" dates back to the 1890s. Tobacco tar was proven to be carcinogenous in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Hitler was very much against smoking. I have a book my Grandma was given to learn from in trade school, it was printed in 1946 and while it didn't say anything about cancer, it said that tobacco products are not suitable for juvenile people and those with heart and stomach ailments. I think people knew more than they were willing to acknowledge. It's a bit as with global warming today, we all know the truth but some use denialism or escapism as coping methods. Cigarette companies did a lot of propaganda to convince people that their, and only their products, not those of other companies, were safe to consume because they were made with better quality tobaccos, were "toasted" or otherwise treated. Everything was proprietary, of course. The truth is that tobacco did, indeed undergo treatment to make it less irritating like spraying it with liquorice, menthol, urea and other things. They challenged people to try their cigarettes for 30 days and check for irritations and, indeed, often there were none during that trial period. Things are different in the long run, of course. I don't think the tobacco industry should be let completely off the hook, but currently we have Big Alcohol trying to make people believe booze can be part of a healthy lifestyle as long as you don't drink to excess. They know very well that they would be broke if each and every person who drinks stayed within the limits of what is believed to be tolerable.

    • @EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99
      @EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DellaStreet123 And then there's the fact we're basically using our population as guinea pigs for pharmaceuticals. Don't get me wrong, we need medications, but over-prescription for minor ailments using chemicals with no long-term studies is concerning to me. And then there's food preservatives, colors and flavorings.
      You know, 85% of cancers are environmental and the majority of them are due to diet.

    • @DellaStreet123
      @DellaStreet123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 I also think it will take a few decades until we know the whole truth about wood ovens. They are currently promoted as a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuel, but I wonder if the fumes from wood fires aren't cancerogenic, too. Environmental exposure to wood dust is on the list of the WHO's list of carinogens, and I don't think wood smoke can be much of an improvement. Perhaps the middle class wood oven is just the equivalent of the poor man's tobacco (or weed) smoke.

    About the only way smoking will harm a person is if he smokes in bed or gets run over by a tobacco truck. I started "smoking" candy cigarettes with I was around 5. I don't recommend giving ANYONE real cigarettes that young-- might set the house on fire. 13 is the ideal age. By the way, a Zippo lighter makes a great bar mitzvah gift. Even President knows smoking isn't harmful. Michele just doesn't like the smell of smoke & makes him light up outside. A great product that's been unfairly bullied.

    Doctors have never encouraged to smoke, it's known to be harmful since the 19th cent. General practitioners until the 50s used to consider cigarettes a bad habit that in moderation was as bad as moderate alcohol consumption, and useful to relief stress from everyday life.

      I enjoy this propaganda compared to the anti-smoking ones nowadays. (Not a smoker btw, but someone who hates the fact that smokers are constantly bullied for making their own decisions)
