Yes, that's how R.J. Reynolds conducted their paid surveys in the late 1940's- either they sent doctors free samples of Camels- or they gave a carton to them in person- and officially asked them, *"What cigarette {brand} do YOU smoke, Doctor?".* "The brand named most was *CAMELS."*
This commercial was made when public concerns were first starting to be raised about smoking. I really enjoy smoking cigarettes, but the dishonesty from the tobacco industry was disgusting. Had the tobacco industry not lied about the health effects, which they fully well knew about, smoking would not have been demonized in my opinion.
You don't enjoy smoking, you have no choice. Its like a prisoner saying, he likes being in jail, after he get used to it. Its an addiction, just like any hard drug.
This just proves how truly unscrupulous cigarette companies were back then. They knew damn well how bad smoking was for you. I can't believe I gave big tobacco so much money for 25 years.
SDA's have known the dangers of smoking for well over a century. "Tobacco is a slow insidious, most malignant poison" (Ministry of Healing [1905], p. 327).
Yeah they knew how bad it was. Ask any person on the street and they'd tell you what "smoker's cough" was. They also knew pipe smokers got mouth cancer.
@@EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 I think the concerns about smoking, health-wise, are almost as old as smoking itself. The word "cancer stick" dates back to the 1890s. Tobacco tar was proven to be carcinogenous in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Hitler was very much against smoking. I have a book my Grandma was given to learn from in trade school, it was printed in 1946 and while it didn't say anything about cancer, it said that tobacco products are not suitable for juvenile people and those with heart and stomach ailments. I think people knew more than they were willing to acknowledge. It's a bit as with global warming today, we all know the truth but some use denialism or escapism as coping methods. Cigarette companies did a lot of propaganda to convince people that their, and only their products, not those of other companies, were safe to consume because they were made with better quality tobaccos, were "toasted" or otherwise treated. Everything was proprietary, of course. The truth is that tobacco did, indeed undergo treatment to make it less irritating like spraying it with liquorice, menthol, urea and other things. They challenged people to try their cigarettes for 30 days and check for irritations and, indeed, often there were none during that trial period. Things are different in the long run, of course. I don't think the tobacco industry should be let completely off the hook, but currently we have Big Alcohol trying to make people believe booze can be part of a healthy lifestyle as long as you don't drink to excess. They know very well that they would be broke if each and every person who drinks stayed within the limits of what is believed to be tolerable.

@@EzioAuditoreDaFirenze99 I also think it will take a few decades until we know the whole truth about wood ovens.
